Seriously, love has nothing to do with this.

It makes me furiousssssssss when these stalker fuckwits get described like this.

"Cherchez la femme" FUCKING HELL

He's a stalker extraordinaire. I would put money on him having some sort of order on him.

This story is odd, now it's an American refugee wanting prisoners in Egypt released.

Exactly, which is why jumping to conclusions like the OP helps no one.

HooseRice · 29/03/2016 12:10

Good luck to his ex wife. Going by threads on here a fair few have had nightmare exes, but this is unreal.

I hope he isn't demanding to see her alone.

scarednoob · 29/03/2016 12:11

Ex Egyptian army apparently. And suggesting he has kept the Brits on board.

How the fuck did he get through security with a vest on, regardless of whether it actually even has explosives on it? Any security is only as good as the people carrying it out, as the tragedy of the Russian jet bomb shows only too starkly.

alltouchedout · 29/03/2016 12:11

You can see why they're bloody estranged!

VertigoNun · 29/03/2016 12:13

What has this to do with the British? This gets odder by the minute.

diddl · 29/03/2016 12:18

So he's wanting prisoners released?

So is his ex wife going there just to give some insight into him if possible?

Why do they release info like this?

scarednoob · 29/03/2016 12:19

There were 4 Brits on board and he's kept 4 passengers. Downing Street just says "we are aware of speculation" that it's the 4 Brits he has kept. So it could be bollocks or he could be thinking Brits are somehow worth more in his demands.

If only he - and all the other nutters - knew that Brits are the last thing our government cares about!

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 29/03/2016 12:21

chilled why on each does that point to him being 'mentally unwell'??

BertieBotts · 29/03/2016 12:24

WTF is an American refugee? I wasn't aware America had any wars happening on its soil.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 29/03/2016 12:29

Anyway, looks like he's out now

OddBoots · 29/03/2016 12:33

Regardless of the motive he turns out to have, the problem highlighted in this thread is the way in which the situation was framed in reports and social media when it was thought it was related to his ex.

The idea that he was chasing an ex gave a reflex reaction of it being about love and romance that "Always there is a woman involved." and it is right to challenge this reflex even if it turns out to stem from misreporting.

VertigoNun · 29/03/2016 12:54

The let established is it was all a case of a man with poor mental health that was arrested.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 29/03/2016 13:01

vertigo that makes little sense

coily · 29/03/2016 13:18

This is my worst fear having a relative who suffers from psychosis at times. It's unlikely they'd get this far with a plan but on occasion when they rant about being God or the antichrist I thank my lucky stars they're usually not in situations where they'd endanger other people's lives with their delusions

kickassangel · 29/03/2016 13:35

What OddBoots said.

IT's the way the media have reported it - with very few facts, it's become "ah the poor desperate man pining for his lost love" instead of "what a fucker, threatening to kill people like that".

Because then it's about how the woman should be with him

VertigoNun · 29/03/2016 13:43

Someone on the bbc said the "woman" jokes were not inappropriate at all, it's culture and humour. Hmm

kickassangel · 29/03/2016 15:29

Yes. because a sense of humor is exactly what is needed in a hostage situation. Hmm

givepeasachance · 29/03/2016 15:42

Yes kickass
the entire media jumped to automatic extreme misogyny with this story.
It was staggering how they were reporting it on the BBC without challenge this morning.

Kind of shows that when unprepared and caught on the hood, the stance is extreme sexism.

BillSykesDog · 29/03/2016 15:44

I haven't seen anything in the British media (even the Daily Mail) reporting it like that. The only thing I have seen is reports of some Cypriots making jokes, which are in bad taste and inappropriate.

coily, exactly what I thought. Psychosis or a manic phase. His poor wife and family must have really been through the wringer dealing with this as it sounds like he is extremely ill. But poor him too, it's pretty clear now he's not well. What a sad situation for all involved.

AuntieStella · 29/03/2016 15:48

I didn't see the BBC version, and am surprised they got it so badly wrong.

We had SKY on, and it changed its tone as soon as the official press conference said that most earlier versions were bollocks inaccurate. But even before that, it was all centred on him and his likely psychological problems.

BillSykesDog · 29/03/2016 15:59

Personally I think that starting a pretty nasty thread and some of the unpleasantness about him on here when there was always a really high probability he was going to be ill is just as bad if not worse than any bad taste gags about 'look for the woman'.

But I suppose being Mumsnet the mentally ill are fair game as long as they're male.

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 29/03/2016 16:15

I think the coverage rather than the perpetrator was the target of the op, Bill.

Shutthatdoor · 29/03/2016 16:18

I think the coverage rather than the perpetrator was the target of the op, Bill.

I disagree.

There is nothing in the OP about coverage. just a lot of jumping to the wrong conclusions

givepeasachance · 29/03/2016 16:20

bill - I don't understand your point.

The media were reporting that a man had hijacked a plane to get to see his ex-wife and the reporting of it was staggeringly misogynistic.

The issue is with the misogyny - is that not allowed?

I have never at any point on here, said it is ok to slag off people with mental health issues, the two points are so separate I am not sure how you made the link.
