Oh is decorating his house thank god we don't live together as his taste is clearly vile.

We've been looking at wallpaper hes chosen what he likes then goes on to say what colour gloss for the skirting boards?

I said white which I thought was the sane and only answer to what colour a skirting board should be. Green is the answer apparently. Hmm

Is this a thing?? Have I been living under a rock and this looks nice?. I may have said how it looks tacky and he went mental. Now I feel like a bitch..

Is gloss also a gigantic MN faux pas now? Surely it's nice and tough?

Gloss is not a MN faux pas, its more that its gone out of fashion in rl. A big part in that fashion change is that gloss now yellows much faster (bad yellowing by as little as 18months-2years in). Although I think the formulas are getting better again now that paint companies have had more time to reformulate without the chemicals they used to contain to stay white (EU banned certain bad chemicals which were what previously kept gloss white).

Do plastic skirtings not get damaged? Can you paint them when you feel you need a change or do you have to replace them? And if they get the sun are they not like plastic fascias and go faded and brittle?
(I resisted replacing my facings with plastic when my neighbour was having his done - I can get them all painted for £300 every 5 yrs or so . (Although to be fair a section of wood will probably will need replacing in a couple of years as it is starting to rot so probably will add £100 to the cost)
Neighbour paid £3k for his to be done in plastic with a 10yr guarantee. (I figured that's getting them painted 10 times - so about 50yrs worth) He's paid someone to wash them for him at least once and now - must 12-13yrs later - the trim on the sides looks faded and brittle - like it could do with a paint Wink)

PVC skirtings been a thing for a while now, I imagine it's fairly durable. Place and click, stuff will put me out of a job!

No idea about how the colour lasts, I work in wood but keep hearing about the coloured glittery PVC stuff and I have a job in a few weeks were we're looking at it as an option. I'm currently trying to find out how long it lasts and how durable it is.

We've been redecorating recently and found the walls were painted orange and skirtings avocado green... With painted brown doors!!! How very 70s

But, no, I don't think any option but white is acceptable for skirting boards
