Aibu Coloured Skirting Boards??

Oh is decorating his house thank god we don't live together as his taste is clearly vile.

We've been looking at wallpaper hes chosen what he likes then goes on to say what colour gloss for the skirting boards?

I said white which I thought was the sane and only answer to what colour a skirting board should be. Green is the answer apparently. Hmm

Is this a thing?? Have I been living under a rock and this looks nice?. I may have said how it looks tacky and he went mental. Now I feel like a bitch..

Bad painting and poor colour choice is one thing.

But coloured skirting boards can look great

I think it depends what green. Choosing the right tone of green can be tricky, but there's nothing inherently wrong with green, IMO

Ladycrazycat · 26/03/2016 07:39

I really like painted skirting boards, although unsure about the green. I do however dislike wallpaper I'm afraid! Each to their own I guess.

OTheHugeManatee · 26/03/2016 08:15

Our house works best in quite strong colours (I've just picked Inchyra Blue for the dining room which I'm very excited about) but skirting boards? White all the way.

JapanNextYear · 26/03/2016 08:24

Our house had dark green ceiling gloss and dark green woodwork and dark wood Windows when we moved in. Several days of muttering from the decorators and it's now ...much brighter...less like a Victorian pub.

We had orange gloss skirting boards when I was a kid.

However I could see that light walls and a tasteful coloured skirting board could be good.

I have satin on my front door - I used the proper outdoor wood paint in a lovely greeny grey colour.

I found dulux eggshell also dried quickly and I just love the Matt finish! There are gloss, satin and eggshell that are quick drying versions if that's what you need.

JolseBaby · 26/03/2016 08:58

I think skirting boards in a sage green would look great. However the result will largely depend on the room and amount of light it gets. I would love grey walls and pale skirting boards, but our place just does not get enough light - so it works better the other way round.

My dad painted the radiator orange once and my mum went batshit, it was hilarious

hostinthemaking · 26/03/2016 09:15

Someone is offering mahogany skirting boards on trash nothing so take it they always existed in a non white colour.

they always existed in a non white colour.

Mahogony is the type of wood, not just a colour.

Abraid2 · 26/03/2016 09:21

White gloss skirting boards look dated now. Many interior design sites will steer you towards keeping them the same or even a darker version of the wall colour.

Ours are off-white or pale grey satinwood. Nothing white and shiny.

HackerFucker22 · 26/03/2016 09:37

DP is a decorator and whilst every place we've ever lived in had / has white skirting boards apparently it's not uncommon for his clients especially those with interior designers to have coloured woodwork in rooms.

Golder rule is rooms must be huge and light to carry it off though.

DP works for rich people with big houses and we are poor and live in a small house so the woodwork is white.

HackerFucker22 · 26/03/2016 09:38

*golden rule

DubiousCredentials · 26/03/2016 09:40

I repainted all our gloss woodwork with satin after reading on here that gloss was a no-no. I hate it. Yes it looks more modern but omg it marks like a bastard and already needs redoing less than 18mths later.

So I will be back to gloss as soon as we have the spare money Sad

Abraid2 · 26/03/2016 09:40

I must admit I find some of the illustrations of painted woodwork on the F and B website very gloomy. Mid- grey and a darkish yellow on some windowsills is the darkest I've gone.

Clare1971 · 26/03/2016 09:52

Is it just me or is no one else horrified that the OP said 'Lime'? Come on folks, there's green and then there's lime. One of those is just about acceptable if you don't live with OH and he's perfect in every other way and he's colourblind. The other is not. Under any circumstances. Ever.

We chose this lime froth Sanderson paint, but I think the lime relates to lime blossom rather than citrus fruit.

It looks muted but warm in a west-facing sitting room that was otherwise very cold and uninviting for most of the day, and works well with our faded terracotta sofas.

Lime green is DS2's favourite colour. He would probably love lime coloured woodwork (and actually I think it would look great with plain white smooth walls)

WhereYouLeftIt · 26/03/2016 10:16

I googled 'green skirting boards' and barring two pictures, every single image was green walls with WHITE skirting boards. Of the two, one was on the page Ameliablue linked to, and the other was the one I've added here. Which I quite like, if you're rocking the Victorian/Edwardian vibe, which by the sound of it he isn't. Does he still have black ash furniture?

Some of the magazine style pics posted earlier with coloured woodwork actually look lovely ... but does this depend on you having the same colour throughout the whole house? (Not going to happen here!)

If not, what happens with doors and door frames? Do you have to paint to a middle line either side of the door?

SpringerS · 26/03/2016 10:40

Is white the only acceptable colour for skirting boards? All mine are varnished wood, like my doors, which I much prefer.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 26/03/2016 10:49

Gosh. Is gloss also a gigantic MN faux pas now? Surely it's nice and tough?

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 26/03/2016 11:31

If its satin any marks should just wipe off. I've also personally found it rarely marks and certainly no worse than gloss. If its egg shell then its a different matter.

FarrowandBallAche · 26/03/2016 11:33

It can be OK to paint them a colour.
It's all very farrow and ball.

EveryoneElsie · 26/03/2016 11:34

Ours are satin black [defiant].

ScoutsMam · 26/03/2016 11:36

I fit skirting boards.

Glittery plastic is the new thing, coloured is so 2015.
