This is a little bit about another thread, but having read about how many people weren't sure about how to pass a horse on the road, I thought this might help.

We tend to ride on the roads to get to a usable bridle path (for the lucky ones) or because we have no off road riding (the unlucky ones), not to annoy car drivers.

Should be compulsory viewing. We were driving down a road the other day with a horse coming towards us, the land rover behind the horses slowed down so did we, the car behind the land rover however overtook the land rover and passed between us and the horse. Far too close to both of us for comfort. People like that should lose their licence.

Yanbu, but I suspect the type of people who drive impatiently will be in too much of a hurry to watch this.

It should be part of the practical test to have to pass horses and cyclists safely.
Also everyone should be retested every 5yrs. I see so many numpties driving dangerously..

Reminds me that there has been no more news about the woman who killed the funeral horse in Coychurch...

Agree that it should be part of the test, even if learners had to watch this vid as part of their theory.

I think this is good, and I agree learner drivers should watch this, or something like it.

That said, I also think some horse riders need to think about the Highway Code (it does apply to horses as well as cars) and to take precautions based on it. I read the thread about the woman who tried to pass horses at a high speed - she was very wrong, but I think I'm remembering rightly that it was also mentioned the horse riders were riding three abreast, which is also a very bad idea.

I used to drive a lot in the countryside (less now) and found regular riders/drivers were usually fine, but people who didn't often drive in the countryside or riders who were new to it could be an absolute menace, and there was fault on both sides.
