What are people waiting for?

Is it aesthetically pleasing to some people to have an out of date tatty piece of pointless paper slightly blocking their view of the road?

Are there 'listed' cars out there where it's a requirement to leave them in?

FFS why?

I've never owned a car and knew nothing about tax discs becoming obsolete. I was saying to my sister that my neighbours hadn't taxed their car for over a year BlushBlush!

Songofsixpence · 30/03/2016 10:10

Mine is still on, with about 5 years worth of tax discs in it.

The holder kept falling off so I put so much tape on it to stick it down that I now cba to unpeel it all

Looking out my office window, about half the cars I can see in the work carpark still have tax discs on.

A fairy massacre Grin

EllenJanethickerknickers · 30/03/2016 10:18

As many others I have left mine on to remind me of my renewal date. And I have 6 years of old ones behind it. It's, well, traditional? My car feels naked without it. So nyah!

Hulababy · 30/03/2016 10:20

Mine went yesterday. I left it in my car when it was picked up to be taken away and sold. Was covered by my work parking permit though - which luckily I did remember to remove just before he drove off with the car!!!

However nice shiny new car had no tax disk holder so nowhere for my parking permit! New cars almost always came with one, normally advertising the garage or whatever.

I have had to buy a new shiny tax disk holder to put my parking permit into.

WallToWallBastards · 30/03/2016 14:51

My mum says it makes her feel rebellious driving round with an out of date tax disk Grin

JustDanceAddict · 30/03/2016 15:06

I'm getting a new car - prob Fri or Sat - which means taxed from beg of month. Am glad I'm not getting it tmw now re the tax situation. my old one has been scrapped and tax was due tmw so I'm beating the system - a bit.

GrumpyMummy123 · 30/03/2016 15:47

I think ours is still there.

But we also have several hundred raisins, bucket and spade from last summer, odd socks, many crumbs, children's clothes of a size too small and think I even saw a half eaten mini malt loaf in there the other day.

Im not keeping any them for sentimental reasons... its just laziness.

TheEmmaDilemma · 30/03/2016 17:03

Some people will have just got a years before the new process came in. My Mum did, I had to ask why on earth she still had one.

ArmchairTraveller · 30/03/2016 17:06

There was the ridiculous fiasco when the site crashed and the DVLA were wailing that they had no idea so many people would be using it at the same time and it wasn't built for the numbers...so perhaps we keep them because we don't trust computers not to delete everything and forget that we've been paying for years.
Or we just like the look of the little coloured circle.

I am fan of confusing future archeologists.

Peanutjambutty · 30/03/2016 22:43

I have replaced mine with a smiley Smile to cock a snoop at the nosey fuckers at work who used to wander around the car park to 'helpfully' tell you that your tax has expired.
Most of the car checkers have got bored and moved on to whining about the state of the staff room bin and microwave.
Still have a couple of hardcore car checkers though, makes their day if someone has a flatty, but had to compromise today with telling me my tyre is a bit bald Hmm.

queenMab99 · 30/03/2016 23:14

I am just leaving mine there to annoy those who feel the need to mind other peoples business.

clary · 30/03/2016 23:23

I have an out of date National Trust sticker in my car OP.

It's not even mine as we left the NT years ago, it was my mum's as it was her car. I'm going to leave it there now just to annoy you Grin

RabbitSaysWoof · 30/03/2016 23:26

Mine is still there. I only noticed the other day that other people don't have them.

fakenamefornow · 30/03/2016 23:34

I think it would take me about 20 seconds to remove mine. I'm very busy doing important things and so can't spare the time. You must be less busy and not have such important things to do to enough time on your hands to remove old car tax discs. :)

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 30/03/2016 23:34

I took mine off a few months ago, it was due an MOT and in my confused mind I thought it would look less like the neglected heap it is if I took the outdated tax disc off and shoved a new air freshener in. The 'mother in law in the boot' and 'honk if you bonk' stickers stayed on though: they are classics.

crazywriter · 31/03/2016 17:20

I would probably still have mine in if I still had the old car. We got a new car last Oct after I was fed up of constantly breaking down on the motorway with the other one and that one didn't come with a tax disc. I kind of miss mine though. My parents and PILs have their tax discs still. Doesn't both me, and I guess it's a reminder for some.

PortiaCastis · 31/03/2016 17:22

Can't be arsed to take mine down. That's about it really.

TimeToMuskUp · 31/03/2016 17:24

My car is so dirty I can't see if the tax disc is even there. I blame the DC. Besides, it's hardly blocking your screen unless you're a teeny tiny borrower.

FunkyPeacock · 31/03/2016 17:27

Mine is still there too - and no doubt will be in another 12 months too!

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 31/03/2016 17:36

When the news came through that we could remove the paper discs, I immediately texted DH to let him know ...his reply: "that is the most boring text I've ever seen in my life" Shock Grin

BigDamnNCFail · 31/03/2016 17:46

Here seems like a good place to ask since I've been terrified to ask anyone in real life

I have my grandma's old car but don't/can't drive so it just sits on a drive. I declared it SORN or whatever it's called the first couple of years I had it but then moved and didn't think to notify them so didn't get a reminder and forgot all about it. That was about a decade ago and it hasn't been taxed or declared SORN since (though, hasn't been driven either).

I wouldn't even have any idea how to go about it and am a bit terrified worried that if I do the DVLA will see I haven't done it in forever and fine me or something. Can anyone set my mind at ease (yes, I suffer from anxiety)?

CountessOfStrathearn · 31/03/2016 17:50

"This [SORN] declaration is valid until you re-tax, sell, permanently export or scrap the
vehicle"

So you are fine. Get the address sorted out though.

pointythings · 31/03/2016 18:51

I was thinking of taking mine off, but now I'm going to leave it on until we trade in the car in November. Grin

nippiesweetie · 31/03/2016 19:39

OP, did you know that a schoolboy set up a successful business producing jokey tax disc reminders? I'm toying with the idea of putting my last real one in a little frame.
