What are people waiting for?

Is it aesthetically pleasing to some people to have an out of date tatty piece of pointless paper slightly blocking their view of the road?

Are there 'listed' cars out there where it's a requirement to leave them in?

FFS why?

Take them out and sell them on EBay. I sold mine (one of the last issued, unperforated as they were running out of the proper paper) for £20!

TiggyD · 23/03/2016 21:58

For every out of date tax disc left in, a fairy dies.

Which could be a problem as so many cars are run by fairy dust nowadays.

Ive got five years worth all stacked in the tax disc holder. Do I win a prize?

Ameliablue · 23/03/2016 22:01

If I have the previous five years in the holder dogs that mean I've killed five fairies. Can one of them be Tinkerbell cos she is quite annoying.

lampygirl · 23/03/2016 22:02

My UK one got removed as soon as you could but I do still have 3 out of date Swiss ones stuck to the windscreen... because the residue is a bit mucky so I need to wait and replace one each year Thank god they were never sticky each time you got them here.

Wolfiefan · 23/03/2016 22:03

I have left my tax disc in the car. It reminds me which month I need to renew my tax!

unlucky83 · 23/03/2016 22:03

Like a PP mine is due at the end of the month ...and I still have the old tax disc on . When I clean the inside of my car/ I remember I might take it off... so when I want to sell it!!
I actually was walking along a road with DD2 a week or so ago past lots of parked cars and I noticed and pointed out to her that I'd say 50% still had their discs on.
I have a reminder for mine and DPs on my calendar but DP was 2 weeks late paying his this year cos they send you the letter out weeks in advance and he bought the car in the middle of the month (wrote his old car off) and I'd confused which month was the renewal month ...with a disc that would be less likely to happen...

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 23/03/2016 22:47

Mine is still there. What an odd thing to bother about.

OhSoGraceful · 23/03/2016 22:52

Longdistance If you need to know if a vehicle is taxed, you put the numberplate into the dvla website and it'll tell you.

I still have a stack of old discs...

Yes.

FFS why?

To you annoy you personally.

PollyPurple · 23/03/2016 23:12

YABU!

I actually asked Ds to take mine off for me last week Blush and it wasn't having any of it, stuck fast.

I told him to leave it on and haven't given it another thought UNTIL THIS THREAD.

Tbh, I don't care what people think of me.

PrimalLass · 23/03/2016 23:21

I just can't be arsed.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 23/03/2016 23:27

Best part of 30 years driving with a small obscured region of my lower left and vision and now you want me to change overnight fifteen months?
I had tax discs on my little red pedal car. I don't feel dressed without them.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 23/03/2016 23:28

Simon no. I have at least 8 years in mine :)

I've just got my first car taxed today at the post office, but they said it will take a few days to go onto the system. Can I legally drive it already without getting in trouble? It doesn't seem to say on here: www.dvla-contact-number.co.uk/car-tax/

ExpandingRoundTheMiddle · 30/03/2016 09:15

Someone's got far too much time on their hands Grin
You know it's a short walk from tax discs to net curtain twitching yes? All those twitchers had to start somewhere. Wink

unlucky83 · 30/03/2016 09:37

amelia I would say so - you have a receipt for the tax paid, you have paid so you are taxed. I guess they just meant it might not show up on the government website as being taxed for a few days. If you got pulled for not being taxed by number plate recognition etc for that it wouldn't result in a fine because (even if you had to show the receipt to prove it) - you have paid.
Otherwise the system wouldn't work - as soon as someone sells a car it is no longer taxed by the previous owner. You would be mad to tax a car a few days before you bought it (in case the sale fell through) so they can't have a time delay. It wouldn't be taxed anywhere.
IMO it is a rip off system... buying it so close to the end of the month means you have paid the tax for the whole of March for 2 days cover....your renewal next year will be 1st March... and the previous owner (assuming it wasn't SORNed) will have paid the tax for the whole of March too and can't claim that back - so it was tax for March twice.
If I was buying so close to the end of the month and could wait to drive it for a few days I'd try and get the previous owner to deliver it to me - leave it 'off road' so eg my drive and SORN it for 2 days and start the tax from 1 April...just on principle!!!!

unlucky83 · 30/03/2016 09:41

(You couldn't use it until the tax started though - you would have to leave it on your/a friend's drive for those 2 days - and it couldn't be parked on the road/public car park etc)

TheOtherSideOfTheMoon · 30/03/2016 09:43

Mine is still there. As are about 5 years of old ones. I quite liked stacking them up and cba to take them out.

Voteforpedr0 · 30/03/2016 09:44

Why does it bother you ? Surely those stickers with crude slogans on them are more offensive like Life's a bitch or other stuff thats not appropriate for kids to see ?

ArmchairTraveller · 30/03/2016 09:45

' Ive got five years worth all stacked in the tax disc holder. Do I win a prize?'

No. I have 9. Smile
Why are they there? Historical ephemera.

ameliaesmith · 30/03/2016 09:49

Thanks, I have been driving it since I went to the post office but was driving scared that I might get pulled up for it!

AugustaFinkNottle · 30/03/2016 09:49

Why does it bother you?

RaspberryOverload · 30/03/2016 09:52

I took my tax disc out and use the holder for my work parking permit.

But it was quite some time before I thought to do this, I simply forgot to get around to it.
