To think there's absolutely nothing wrong with having pale skin

and it looks a hell of a lot better than orange streaky tan?

I walked past a group of teenage girls today and they all had orange streaky legs. Why? What's wrong with just leaving your skin pale? Why do they think orange streaky legs are preferable? Confused

Didn't Coco Chanel make suntans fashionable?

And the TOWIE numpties!

flowery · 24/03/2016 10:09

I'm very pale, and don't mind it at all - as long as I wear colours that suit me I look fine. If I wear the wrong colours I look like death!

My legs are miles whiter than the rest of me and I prefer them with a bit of a tan however I can't be doing with all the faff and streak-potential of fake tan, and I just don't have the time to worry about it, so in summer I just go for maxi skirts/cropped trousers, other than on the beach where I might bring out the shorts Shock

BoboChic · 24/03/2016 10:11

There is nothing wrong with pale, untanned skin if it is well cared for (exfoliated and moisturised).

Katarzyna79 · 24/03/2016 10:13

bumble thanks :)

you know when asians looks for brides for their sons when parents return from meeting a potential match the first thing relations ask is "is she pretty".what they really mean is she white skinned so donr bother with s phyducal description. She vould have a huge wonky nose seriously crooked yellow teeth a unpleasant character yet if shes white skinned she is a potential runner up loool

This still happens. In fact my sis who was raised in the uk has alarmingly taken onthese views. Her son has been seeing a girl for many yrs finslly fessed up. so she asked for pics and my sis said "she's dark not like us but will do". To be honest shes gorgeous and her skin tone is like mine so her comment really pissef me off. I did tell her her ideaswere stupid, but pointless coz she' ll concur but doesnt ry agree with me. Shes lighter than me too so she must think im.ugly if my nephews gf is considered dark lool

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 24/03/2016 10:17

I'm pale, with the blotchy, blue tones to it.

I'd never get a fake tan but then again my legs have never seen the light of day so I've had no need I suppose.

I have a bitchy work colleague with olive skin who always goes on about how I'd look better with some colour on me. She's a Britain First type so I shut her up with 'but my colouring's pure English...'

I am pale, I don't exfoliate or moisturise, and there's nothing wrong with my skin, thank you very much.

I like pale skin. My DD's have that Irish glow, and its gorgeous. Clear and translucent.

Natural is fine. I like pale skin, I like black skin, asian skin. I don't like it when it looks like people have made a huge effort to change their skin tone- much lighter foundation on black skin, or heavily tanned/artifical tans.

Bragadocia · 24/03/2016 10:25

I was thinking while watching the Night Manager thing, how unusual it is to see the love interest female character being so pale. She shows a lot of skin, lounging around in floaty kaftans etc, and looks beautiful. It goes without saying that this actress would look beautiful with a mahogany tan too, but it's good to see untanned/undyed skin.

originalmavis · 24/03/2016 10:27

The bad lawyer (who turned out not so bad) in Spiral was a gorgeous pale redhead.

bumbleymummy · 24/03/2016 10:44

" I suppose wanting to be what you are not is all part of being young." True!

Grin untilthecowscomehome. Brilliant response!

Katarzyna. How awful to be judged like that :( I suppose it's just as bad to judge someone on their hair colour/height/nose/teeth/whatever too though.

A friend of mine used to use talc as face powder because she's got such pale skin. It actually worked really well for her!

I used sunbeds for a few weeks before I got married, as I'm dark haired but pale skinned and my dress was silver, so a tan looked nicer. It's not something I'd make a habit, but fake tan always looks awful on me and I did use a light SPF before I went in. I don't knock people for their colour choices though, everyone has their own preference.

Katarzyna79 · 24/03/2016 17:41

untilthecowscomehome how do people behave so rude, I can't believe your colleague said that. I'm not rude but I can be blunt in my bid to be honest all the time. I don't ever comment on appearances it's too personal. my friends however if they begged an honest opinion i'd give it them or my siblings but no one else.

bubbly yes I was using big nose etc as an example though I swear i'd never mqke any comments like that :)

my sibling didn't want to hold one of my daughters when she was born, I could see the disgust in her face. so I sort of prompted her to pick the baby up since she had gone all the way to the hospital. Funny my girl had red tones she was the same colour as 2 of my brothers, and lighter than my father, who looks like a dark skinned African man. We are a huge range of tones in our family very light, wheats, reddish browns and dad is the darkest, so it's in our genes.

Sometimes I think she;s fortunate to have not had any girls how would she treat her girl had she been dark skinned? Her sons are very fair skinned something pointed out a lot by everyone, go figure.

knittykitty66 · 25/03/2016 12:52

I'm so pale that even some of the gradual tanners look orange on me! If I ever go out without makeup I always get lots of "are you feeling alright?" "you don't look very well what's wrong with you?" So I don't leave house without it on anymore (except in winter mornings when it pitch black to put bins out)
Would second the the bare minerals for pale foundation, I float between the 2 palest shades depending on the season, The body shop one is also good, but they don't often have the palest shade.

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 25/03/2016 13:02

katarzyna your comments all hit a chord with me (I'm indian). I remember my granny discussing potential suitors for my older sisters and "he's very fair" seemed to be the ultimate accolade.

The gentleman in question could have been an axe wielding lunatic with 13 fingers and halitosis. But he's sooooo fair with lovely green eyes Hmm.

Gatehouse77 · 25/03/2016 13:18

I couldn't give a hoot what anyone else does but sometimes it's so obvious it's fake tan gone wrong I'm not sure what they're trying to achieve. Same with those who wear heavy makeup.

Personally, I just couldn't be arsed. And I'd look like mutton dressed as lamb. But the last time I wore makeup was for my wedding and then only because of having photos, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

Essentially, I'm a lazy cow and it wouldn't be worth the effort. DH doesn't like make up or perfume but I do very rarely wear perfume.

Floppityflop · 25/03/2016 13:27

I'm a Caspar / Ghostface and always have been. I keep getting told I should have an anaemia test (even by doctors!) when I'm perfectly fine or I'd actually look pretty with bronzer. My dad has had skin cancer so I'd rather be pale. Actually, even if I spend lots of time outside usually only my nose takes a colour - not a good look! My mum is really dark, so I think I have the potential to tan rather than burn, but I CBA. I think it's sad that people bleach their skin too - that's awful! Natural is always healthier. Although if you have pale skin you will be able to take more vitamin D from the sun!

Floppityflop · 25/03/2016 13:31

But up thread is right about looking after pale skin. It's usually very dry and more likely to need primers etc. or make-up than darker skin.

oldlaundbooth · 25/03/2016 13:36

www.hawaiiantropic.com/sun-care-products/hawaiian-tropic-island-radiance-self-tanning-creme-lotion

This stuff is really good, especially for pale British skin.

Katarzyna79 · 25/03/2016 13:38

jacob oo green eyes are tempting though ;)

ive never heard them say it about men but i knoe it happens theyre just discreet about it. I think they concentrate on the mans wage packet more poor guy lool oh what a shallow world

Eustace2016 · 25/03/2016 13:56

I am always the palest person everywhere except for my freckles. It doesn't bother me at all.It looks fine as does very dark skin. I never know why people want to change their skin colour. All kinds can look lovely and anyway vanity is a sin. you don't become happy in life by worrying too much about how you look -that is just the path to unhappiness.

chicaguapa · 28/03/2016 17:42

I think this has flipped on its head now. Tends to be the poorer people that are bothered by getting a tan IMO. You don't have to be wealthy to go abroad now.

I was just thinking about this yesterday as we're on the Costa del Sol Hmm at the moment. I agree that it has flipped again and I think that a suntan looks chavvy now. And there's a difference between a healthy glow and a tan that has come from a week or 2 of lying in the sun working on it.

It's the same as smoking. There'll be exceptions of course but on the whole it's the less educated that are ignoring the health implications and the more educated who are heeding them.

iMogster · 28/03/2016 18:03

For a long time, the rich were indoors or outside under a parasol, the poor were working outside and getting tanned. White was desirable.
Coco Chanel went on holiday and came back with a tan, people who could afford to travel abroad and sunbathe were then admired. A tan has been fashionable ever since.

The modern tango'd look is a bit chavy though, I don't like fake tan. I like natural darker skin tones.
I think a light tan looks good as it looks like a healthy glow and covers skin imperfections. It also photographs well.

I am very pale and have always loved it. Some people said I was a beautiful porcelain doll others have said I look pale and ill! I do have to wear a little blusher these days as I am not as radiant as I used to be, but I'm in my 40s now and don't have any wrinkles yet! As I get older, I have more confidence to embrace what nature gave me.

awesomeness · 28/03/2016 18:37

why does it matter what colour a persons skin is? Hmm

it's not the colour of the tan it's the application, some people just haven't mastered the art and maybe young girls and teens can't afford a professionally sprayed tan, or a decent off the shelf product.

if they like the orange look then so what?

I have a group of friends and they range from mahagony to milk, doesn't make them any different though

awesomeness · 28/03/2016 18:40

and judging by some comments those that are naturally tanned through their heritage (like myself) or their job, are chavvy

Heather9172 · 28/03/2016 19:10

GreyBird84 I have the same problem trying to match my pale skin. The only thing I like is Chantecaille Just Skin tinted moisturiser in Alabaster - pricey but I don't wear makeup more than once or twice a week so it's worth it for me not to look orange. The only other shade I found was when I had a custom blend from Prescriptives but they no longer exist AFAIK Sad

Debbiedoradooo · 28/03/2016 19:26

Bare minerals do a great range of colours and different types of foundation for anyone struggling with tones, they also treat the skin and vitamin c helps brighten and even tone
