To think there's absolutely nothing wrong with having pale skin

and it looks a hell of a lot better than orange streaky tan?

I walked past a group of teenage girls today and they all had orange streaky legs. Why? What's wrong with just leaving your skin pale? Why do they think orange streaky legs are preferable? Confused

Heh this has reminded me of my makeup trial before I got married and the lass did a spray tan. It came out perfect, lovely and even she was quite pleased.

I however felt utterly ridiculous, covered up with a hood if I went out.. Hiding behind walls and stuff if I saw someone I knew until it faded.

Never ever again Grin

Bogeyface · 23/03/2016 20:48

I like having pale skin on my upper body but i hate having white legs, I just think that if you are larger than the average bear, as I am, having a slight tan on your legs can look more flattering. However as I dont want an orange face, I just wear trousers or maxi dresses!

Alconleigh · 23/03/2016 21:34

I just use a bit of Vita Liberata on my legs to render them non blue in summer. They are still a shade that most people would consider pre holiday, but they are no longer such an alarming bluey, purpley, turkey before it's cooked shade.....

I'm all for pale pride, I am a flaming redhead, but my blue legs are not pale and interesting, they look pretty awful. So I help them out a bit.

BillBrysonsBeard · 23/03/2016 22:28

I use a light gradual tanner as otherwise I'm basically purple Grin But I agree the tango look isn't good.

MamaLazarou · 23/03/2016 22:34

YANBU! We have a young woman at work who is tall, gorgeous, willowy and red-haired. Her face is like a porcelain doll's. The other day she came into work with a spray tan and it completely ruined her look. If I had her looks, I would wear them with pride!

I have the yellow-toned kind of skin that definitely looks better tanned, though.

Minshu · 23/03/2016 22:36

I used to get told off by some members of the family for not tanning. And I still feel threatened by summer - awaiting the sarcastic and unpleasant comments.

Every year I say I'll embrace my natural colour, and every summer I find myself lying in the sun with inadequate protection seeking approval that will never come...

originalmavis · 24/03/2016 07:48

Why do fake tans come put orange? A girl I worked with came in one day after being recoloured - jet black hair and face like an oompa loompa. Eyebrows like they'd been drawn on with a sharpie. It's a look I'm obviously the wrong generation to appreciate.

Actually, I don't like my veiny legs and blue feet! I was definitely born a few hundred years too late (when ladies would draw on blue veins on their decolletage)

originalmavis · 24/03/2016 07:49

Sun bathing is bloody boring anyway.

MyBreadIsEggy · 24/03/2016 07:58

I am almost see-through I'm so pale. I always have people asking if I'm ill, and I can never find make up to match my skin tone.....but I love my paleness! I try to stay out of the sun and wear factor 50 on holiday to try and avoid tanning at all - but I am the strange one when compared to all my spray-tanned friends Hmm

Birdie85 · 24/03/2016 09:12

I'm always getting asked if I'm ill... I'm just pale FFS! If this was the 18th Century people would covet my skin!

I would love to find the right shade of foundation though, nothing seems to match my yellowy-white complexion quite right. Confused Fake tan looks awful on me so I've given up!

Whenever people tell me to get a tan and discuss using tanning oils and only ever use factor 8 sun cream etc I just tell them that I have no desire to prematurely age my skin and look like a leather handbag and I apply my factor 30/50 with pride!

Aridane · 24/03/2016 09:23

I don't disrespect my fair friends' choices - equally though they don't disrespect mine (am olive skinned in summer, sallow and ill looking in winter when I need a bit of a boost to not look quite so unwell...)

bumbleymummy · 24/03/2016 09:29

Yes, finding foundation is a pain.

I'm not disrespecting people's choices. I just don't think that orange skin (streaky or otherwise) looks better than a natural skin colour. It's a shame that teenage girls seem to think that it does and that their own natural skin colour isn't attractive enough.

I'm so with you on this. A friend's daughter recently got married and her 3 younger sisters (all teens) were bridesmaids. They'd fake tanned themselves to within an inch of their lives, especially the eldest bridesmaid and it looked awful. They're such beautiful girls normally but they really looked like they needed a good wash in all the photos!

I'd sooner have my hideously blue legs than orange ones.

WorraLiberty · 24/03/2016 09:37

I don't care for fake tan at all.

I don't particularly care for the really really pale look either.

I suppose it's just personal preference, but I think most people look better with a bit of a natural sun tan.

They seem to 'glow' and just look healthier, which is ironic considering the skin damage.

Sunshine87 · 24/03/2016 09:38

I'm pale I can never get a tan natural so I do enjoy treating myself to spray tan especially if I'm going out anywhere nice.

ivykaty44 · 24/03/2016 09:40

I love the look of healthy skin, people look great when they eat well and exercise, they tend to have skin that glows. Great look whatever their skin tone when it glows with health.

JapaneseSlipper · 24/03/2016 09:43

"It goes back to people not wanting to look poor. At one point only the wealthy could afford a holiday abroad and tan."

No it doesn't. Before that (brief) period you mention, there were hundreds of years of rich women carefully preserving their pale skin, to show they didn't have to work outside.

It's the current fashion. Personally I have very pale skin, and never tan. I got a spray tan and it made me look slimmer. I suspect that has a lot more to do with it than this rich/poor theory.

EponasWildDaughter · 24/03/2016 09:51

Well so far no one here has said they love the orange look Grin However, it has to be said that the orange look must be exactly what some people are looking for as they maintain the look year round.

The reason some fake tans look orange is either because they've been applied too heavily, too often, or are the wrong strength/colour for the skin it's on. There are a million shades of fake tan just as there are millions of shades of foundation. IMO the ones which are brown coloured 'so you see where you're putting it' are ironically the worst offenders for leaving you looking streaky and tango'd. A good trick is to mix a gradual tan cream (not coloured) with ordinary body moisturiser in your hand so you get a very faint tint to start with.

Katarzyna79 · 24/03/2016 09:51

agree with mousefinkle

Also bumble its true asians use skin whitening products but so do black ppl and surprisingly white women its just under the euphamism of "lightening&brightening products". These may be used in under eye products for example or to even out skin tone make it appear more youthful.

im asian been matched to mac nc35 just incase u ladies use mac colour match. I havent got dark asian skin nor am i milky white. when i was under 12 i was several shades lighter once i entered secondary i lost a lot of weight was out more so got darker. well my mum would always say im.dark, shed say it in front of the local ladies who popped down for tea. The women would tell her how silly she was, but i dont think they realised the damage it did to me.

I often thought whats wrong with beijg brown im asian ill never be white why does mum want me to be white. its given me insecurities even tho i know its illogical. Whenevrr i see a light skinned south asian girl i think i dont want to stand near her because society will judge me as ugly due to my skin colour. I know this isnt true but it plays in my head just momentarily.

ironically i think black ppl have amazing skin i lovevthe colour. I also like super pale skin against red hair. I wish i could love my colour i do 98% of the time but if im compared to others all the stuff my mum used to say comes flooding back.

So hypocrite as i am op i think white skin black skin hrown is beautiful ppl should embrace it and never tell your daughters or friends theyre too dark or too pasty white or too yellow it could give them insecurities for life.

Really the tangoed look is unnatural and i associate it with the glamour industry so not classy at all. If you get a tan naturally great otherwise natural beauty is the best and safest what of skin cancer? Lots ppl sit in sun or on sunbeds too??? If you're pale and insecure visit india they will treat you so well and you'll get so msny praises for your beauty it should knock out ur insecurities ;)

RedToothBrush · 24/03/2016 09:53

It goes back to people not wanting to look poor. At one point only the wealthy could afford a holiday abroad and tan.

And at one time, darker skin was a sign of poverty as only the wealthy could afford to be indoors all the time.

bumbleymummy · 24/03/2016 09:58

Katazyrna :( sorry that your own mum made you feel insecure. Thanks

I tend to fake tan before going away, without it I go from white to a beautiful pink shade. I don't like being really pale when away in a swimsuit. It's all personal preference. I prefer a little colour but am not one for constant fake tanning. Mainly because I am simply too lazy!

angelos02 · 24/03/2016 10:01

It goes back to people not wanting to look poor

I think this has flipped on its head now. Tends to be the poorer people that are bothered by getting a tan IMO. You don't have to be wealthy to go abroad now.
I use factor 50 when on holiday and some people take the mick!

2016IsANewYearforMe · 24/03/2016 10:03

Honeyed skin is so popular now that you almost never see naturally pale skin. I remember going to the ballet this Christmas. Many of the dancers were naturally pale and their skin was beautiful, luminescent. It reminded me how beautiful North European skin can be in its own way. I suppose wanting to be what you are not is all part of being young.

Didn't Coco Chanel make suntans fashionable?
