Sorry for another car thread! Name changed recently but am a regular poster

So today I was driving in the countryside, road is wide enough for 2 cars, 60mph road, very straight. There were 3 people in a line on horses coming towards me on the opposite side of the road. I was going about 40mph but slowed to 30mph when I saw them. The man on the front horse started waving his arms and looked really angry saying slow down slow down! Wtf? Angry horse people around here piss me off so much. Was I BU?!

Lol @ hobby
I imagine the ppl using our lane as a rat run overtaking my children's school bus think them going to school too is a hobby

Balletgirlmum · 20/03/2016 22:23

Right, whatever.

Gabilan · 20/03/2016 22:23

Lynda I've spent enough time riding and cycling to know just how many entitled fuckwits are out there. MN does give an insight into their mindsets though.

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 20/03/2016 22:25

My final point as I am getting overly invested in this and quite cross about IT is that people are being flippant about other people's lives here. We all share the roads, be it drivers, cyclists, riders, pedestrians. Why can't you slow down for a minute or two? Is it going to make a massive difference in your life? Or is it going to make a life changing decision that I am powerless over, if you decide to not do the decent thing and slow down, is my life, and that of my horse, so worthless?

Balletgirlmum · 20/03/2016 22:26

Would that be why I've never had an accident/incident that was my fault (in fact the only accidents I've ever had was when I've been stationery & someone else ran in the back of me, on one occasion I'd stopped because animals were in the road. )

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 20/03/2016 22:28

gabilan it's sad isn't it? When I drive I am respectful of all other road users, why can't people do the same? Thankfully it is the minority that seem to disagree... If nothing else, you can imagine the damage if a half a tonne animal takes on a car... Doesn't even bear thinking about.

TrixieBlue2016 · 20/03/2016 22:30

Arpege that makes sense. The road is a normal road but has speed bumps and parked cars. It probably best to wait rather than chance it.

Nobodyspecialanymore · 20/03/2016 22:30

Disagreeing with someone does not make my goady or bored. Says something when the riding lot hope me and my family go over a sheer drop. I would love riders to safely indulge their hobbies, on trails, which they use horseboxes to get to, and not put the majority of road users at risk.
At the time we were living in our rv, due to losing our house. It wasn't a hobby. It was the only option.
It's the summer tourist trespassers which tend to be the problem here. I've no idea about the uk.

Woodhill · 20/03/2016 22:30

Best to slow down. If the horse did get agitated then and then resulting in an accident happening it would be too late.

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 20/03/2016 22:31

Well done ballet. I hope the next time you see a horse you will slow down... My point still stands, if you are that selfish, think about what a spooked horse could do to your car, and any children who happen to be near by...

Gabilan · 20/03/2016 22:31

Balletgirl, who knows what you've left in your wake. I've witnessed so much crap driving and so many near misses and drivers are blissfully unaware of how much evasive action other people are taking to give them their apparently blemish-free record.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 20/03/2016 22:34

Balletmum, pass a horse going 30 in the opposite direction, and you could cause that horse to bolt - into you, or another car. Plus serious injury/death to the horse, rider, yourself or other drivers.

So yes, you are unsafe on the road.

Wide and slow applies to you too whichever direction you're going in - and "oh sorry officer, I didn't give the horse and rider a second glance' is going to sound pretty stupid when you've caused an accident or death, isn't it?

Teddy1970 · 20/03/2016 22:35

I've seen a horse spooked by a car driving too fast, I say fast but probably about 30mph, it was pretty scary, and yes it's a pain slowing down to pass them I know, especially when you're in a bit of a rush, but it's better than having an accident.

bakingdiva · 20/03/2016 22:35

I used to keep my horse at a yard surrounded by bridle ways and great riding trails. Unfortunately to access them you had to go on about 200m of narrow country roads, including one place where there was a width restriction to a single lane. Even more unfortunate just after this width restriction was the entrance to a very famous football clubs training ground. Some of the guys were great, but a lot of them were complete knobs, racing up behind you, hooting, revving their penis substitutes car engines. One England footballer who shall not be named had a hoof shaped dent in the bonnet of his super car and fully deserved it.

Balletgirlmum · 20/03/2016 22:36

can't be arsed to post further. Think what you like about me - who cares I've hit more important things like I'll chil to think about.

Gabilan · 20/03/2016 22:37

Nobody are you in the US? The UK is a small island with little off road riding. Boxing up is expensive, an environmental nightmare, stressful for the horse and you'd probably just whinge about horse boxes on the road. It's also unnecessary. Read the road ahead, plan, drop down a gear or two in plenty of time, consider other road users and allow time for other people.

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 20/03/2016 22:38

Wow. Hit more important things??? Than me? Than my horse? That's a worry. Thought you had an unblemished record???! Hmm

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 20/03/2016 22:40

Just slow the fuck down for horses, balletmum - driving like you do, and refusing to slow down for horses is just plain dangerous.

Balletgirlmum · 20/03/2016 22:40

Auto correct

WombatStewForTea · 20/03/2016 22:40

Balletmum if you can't think of more than one thing around you when driving then you really shouldn't be on the road.

I'm so fucking angry and your continued attitude when people have pointed out the dangers. You are an accident waiting to happen.
Seriously people have explained it and you still don't get it? Words cannot comprehend.

Balletgirlmum · 20/03/2016 22:41

Gabilan - true. :(

I've ridden a horse along the road who was the most plodding beast ever. Entirely predictable. Until a dog started barking in a concealed garden next to the road and he went utterly batshit.

I had no idea he would react like that (and neither did he probably). Thankfully, car drivers gave us space until he had calmed down. I dread to think what might have happened if someone had insisted on their right to drive at 30mph past us

WombatStewForTea · 20/03/2016 22:42

Balletmum also seems to forget that a lot of these annoying horse riders on the road are children. Would you slow down for them? Seeing as children's lives are apparently the only ones worth considering.
