Sorry for another car thread! Name changed recently but am a regular poster

So today I was driving in the countryside, road is wide enough for 2 cars, 60mph road, very straight. There were 3 people in a line on horses coming towards me on the opposite side of the road. I was going about 40mph but slowed to 30mph when I saw them. The man on the front horse started waving his arms and looked really angry saying slow down slow down! Wtf? Angry horse people around here piss me off so much. Was I BU?!

Two decent images. Can't find one showing all arm signals but stop and I'm turning right/left are obvious really! This is the please slow down one

Well ballet perhaps you should be more aware of your surroundings? Are you seriously telling me that when you drive all you are aware of is the road in front of you? And nobody sorry to hear that, but better a ruined awning than a ruined (or ended) life eh?

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 20/03/2016 22:06

'Peoples hobbies should not impact other drivers'
But isn't that what you're doing? Going somewhere in an rv is your hobby isn't it?

Arpege · 20/03/2016 22:07

Will nobody think of the awning?! Grin

Spring you should never wave a car past. If there was an accident you could be held liable. A car driver should only pass if the car driver believes that it is safe, given his view of the road. By indicating that it is safe you put yourself in the position of being at fault if it is, in fact, not.

Balletgirlmum · 20/03/2016 22:07

No, I'm constantly watching out for things like a child in the pavement who might run out etc etc. But a horse on the opposite side of a wide road why should that affect me?

hollinhurst84 · 20/03/2016 22:07

Riding two abreast
Usually done because the horse on the inside is nervous, young or less experienced (horse or rider)
Also it gives a physical "do not come past me with 6 inches to spare"
It's riding defensively to say "stop and slow down"
Generally two abreast then once car is slowing, pull in to single file. If you squeeze in the hedge single file apologetically, people fly past you

TrixieBlue2016 · 20/03/2016 22:08

Thanks for the advice. My driving instructor always said 'with horses, slow the fuck down and stay the fuck back. Horses are fucking scary'. Grin He would also do a little shake and grimace.

He's right horses scare me.

Arpege · 20/03/2016 22:09

Trixie you can overtake a line of horses in the same way that you could overtake a line of cars - if it is safe to do so.

General rule of thumb would be if you wouldn't pass a car in the same circumstances, don't pass a horse.

Arpege · 20/03/2016 22:10

Because I don't know if you've ever measured a horse nose to flailing back hoof Ballet, but they go awful wide once they swing their arses into the middle of the road.....

Gabilan · 20/03/2016 22:11

Yep, all my riding on the road is defensive. Two abreast forces drivers to perform a proper overtaking manouevre rather than just squeezing by.

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 20/03/2016 22:12

Gosh ballet I am hoping I don't live anywhere near you... Imagine if gasp a child ran out from the opposite side of the road into your path??? Or if your selfish driving spooked my horse and my horse injured afore said child? Then what? But it's ok, you were concentrating on your tunnel vision...

Arpege · 20/03/2016 22:12

Absolutely. Taking up a proper space on the road is far safer, whether you're on a horse or a bike.

hollinhurst84 · 20/03/2016 22:12

People on the thread who are saying they drive fast past and won't give room might also like to be aware that a lot of riders are using cameras now too. And footage has been passed to police as evidence resulting in police visits to drivers

WombatStewForTea · 20/03/2016 22:13

Nobodyspecialanymore and balletmum

At least the op had the grace do accept she was wrong. Interesting how you call horse riders selfish when you're showing yourself to be selfish drivers. How many people to do you need to tell you that horses react badly before you take it seriously?!

Balletmum as others have said horses eyes are in the side of their heads so just because you're on the other side of the road makes no difference.

People's hobbies should not impAct other road users jesus wept cos your precious rv isn't a hobby is it? And how many times does your rv impact on other road users?!

Arses.

LyndaNotLinda · 20/03/2016 22:14

Well let's hope that you whizzing by at 30mph doesn't affect the horse eh Balletgirlmum? You can slow down and crawl past, increasing your journey time by ooh 1 minute at the outside, or you can whizz past and potentially cause a huge fucking crash and kill loads of people.

I know what I'd prefer.

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 20/03/2016 22:14

Sorry that was a rather arsey message but I am rather agog (Grin) at some of the ignorant comments on here.

LyndaNotLinda · 20/03/2016 22:16

One of the most awful things about being on MN is discovering how many truly crap (and proud of it) drivers there are on our roads.

It's bloody terrifying.

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 20/03/2016 22:17

Yup. Seconded.

Lanark2 · 20/03/2016 22:18

Burning RVs might become my hobby..its integral to my hobby that people are inconvenienced, but your desire not to be incomvenienced by my hobby inconveniences me in the pursuit of my hobby.

You bastards.

Gabilan · 20/03/2016 22:19

My hobby helps employ a yard owner, farmers, vets, farriers, saddlers, physios and a wood chip merchant. It's an important part of the local economy and a major drain on my bank account

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 20/03/2016 22:20

We were pushed into the side of the cliff face, ruining our awning on the rv.

No you weren't. Horses don't push vehicles into the side of a cliff. You ruined your own awning because you were impatient.

Neither you, nor balletmum should be on the road.

StillYummy · 20/03/2016 22:21

Yabvu. For all the reasons above.

StillYummy · 20/03/2016 22:22

And hating horse riders is a sweeping statement. Do you also hate van drivers, cyclists, dogs, wildlife?
