do be annoyed our sex life is being restricted?

By someone deciding how often we should be having sex?

DP has type 1 diabetes and with with ED. he has been amazing at getting it dealt with by the GP, and for a few years we have had a regular prescription for a variant of sex drug. (It changes)

We always got it in packs of four. Sometimes we would use this in a week, sometimes over a month (health has meant we haven't used any for a few weeks but that's not long term)

But he's just received a letter saying he will be restricted to four tablets a month. One a week.

It's so hard living with ED, the spontaneous element is already hindered, there's emotions attached to it I couldn't explain (both from his side and mine) but this just seems a kick in the teeth.

He's made an appointment and is going to enquire about a private script or any leeway, but AIBU to be annoyed that someone somewhere decided sex once a week is all we are "allowed"?

It's a bit like condoms in the NHS. Although contraception is meant to be a free service, in practice they may only be available to certain age groups or in certain quantities. Those who want/need more buy them.

I hope that you can set up a reliable way of purchasing the amount you need on private prescription from a reputable source.

ohtheholidays · 18/03/2016 10:02

Have a look online for different chemists and compare the price OP.

You should be able to see if they're legit or not and the prices can vary by a huge amount between different chemists.

I haven't read the whole thread but Tadalafil is licensed for patients who anticipate sexual activity at least twice weekly dose is 2.5mg or 5mg daily gets over the issues of being spontaneous and does away with restrictions. More expensive than Sildenafil but still licensed as prescribable on NHS for people with disbetes. Worth a GP chat?

5608Carrie · 18/03/2016 10:13

Apologies for grammar, on my phone.

GeorgeTheThird · 18/03/2016 10:27

Tadalafil

Great name

TA-DA!!!

IdaJones · 18/03/2016 10:31

"I just feel sad and almost like I have to perform on a certain day and time now so as to not waste one"

Why would it be wasted though? You could just save it for when you want to use it?

TooAswellAlso · 18/03/2016 10:38

Carrie, that looks ace! Will look into that

The waste is regards to having to anticipate sex a few hours previously (it's not instant) so at 6pm we may be in the mood, but come 11pm when kids in bed and work done one of us feels shattered and wants to leave it - but don't want to waste the opportunity of a limited drug? Does that make sense?

paap1975 · 18/03/2016 10:39

The pills cost about £10 each here (EU country). The UK prices sound really low, maybe an EU prescription could be filed privately in the UK.

TooAswellAlso · 18/03/2016 10:44

Tadalafil is a fab name!

Have googled quick and sent link to DP to ask about it tonight at his appointment. It certainly looks good for our needs but I don't know if he has any other meds which might interact.

Am at work now so can't google anymore!

Tesco pharmacy also offer an ED service. It shouldn't cost more than £2-£3 for a private prescription from the pharmacy

IdaJones · 18/03/2016 11:36

Op, yes that does make sense. Must admit I imagined you just threw it in your mouth once you were getting in the swing of it, but thinking about it, it would be unlikely to work that quickly when taken by mouth. I see what you mean.

ApplePaltrow · 18/03/2016 12:00

So pay for the pills yourself.

Is welfare entitlement that engrained in the British psyche?

Cardboxed · 18/03/2016 12:07

I was actually watching this thread to see when there would be an appearance of the word 'entitled' good going Apple

dolkapots · 18/03/2016 12:12

I was expecting this to be about having teens in the house!

OP YANBU to want to have more sex, but I do think one a week on the NHS is very fair, considering that life saving drugs are being cut.

TooAswellAlso · 18/03/2016 12:31

Apple, you win the bullshit bingo.

Where have I ever said I was a. On welfare and b. Entitled?

I'm not foaming at the mouth, I'm a little annoyed. By posting here I now have legit sites to look at and DP has an alternative to go to the GP with tonight.

By no means entitled. Just a little annoyed that because of some people maybe selling on, everyone has a restriction placed on them?

OP posts:
dolkapots · 18/03/2016 12:41

I don't think it is just a matter of restricting due to people selling on, GP's are under pressure to keep prescriptions under a certain threshold.

IPityThePontipines · 18/03/2016 12:43

Considering the whiney crap people spout on here, I see nothing "entitled" about the OP at all.

If I were the OP, I'd be equally unhappy and I'm glad this thread has allowed her to vent and get helpful advice.

When living with a chronic condition it can be the little things that grind you down. Hope you get it sorted OP.

pippistrelle · 18/03/2016 12:44

The NHS is for all of us, not just for people on welfare (whatever that means, in this context). It's not unreasonable for someone to hope that a universal service would treat a medical condition. The OP has not expressed or demonstrated any sense of entitlement at all.

ApplePaltrow · 18/03/2016 13:18

Feeling like you are being controlled or "restricted" because you are not getting enough free stuff makes you entitled.

The NHS is hardly flush with cash and with an aging boomer population, my guess is that their ED pill budget is pretty big.

You get free ED meds. If you want more, pay for them. Simples.

differentnameforthis · 18/03/2016 13:23

Well to be fair, no one has restricted your sex life. They have restricted DRUGS, which yes, impacts on your sex life, but there is probably a good reason for doing so.

You can do other things, it isn't all about PIV sex.

So when you had more of the tablets your dh could take one at say, 6pm, and then actually not benefit from it? So in other words, you are already wasting drugs on occasion? So you are happy to waste it when you have an abundance of it, but not when restricted...hmm. not sure taking drugs that haphazardly is a good thing anyway!

feellikeahugefailure · 18/03/2016 13:26

Its taken me 2 mins to work out your DH doesnt have an eating disorder.

OP - what are the prices for private prescriptions?

PegsPigs · 18/03/2016 13:26

You pay for prescriptions so how is the OP whining about not getting enough free stuff?

OP I'm glad you got some useful links before the bullshit started.

mandi73 · 18/03/2016 13:31

We're in Ireland and DH too has Type 1 Diabetes and also has a perscription for his "little blue tablets" as he calls them. Thay are on his prescription along with his Diabetes medication, sometimes he needs them and sometimes he doesn't so just asks for them to be left off when having his prescription filled, but there's no limit on how many he can have a month.

5608Carrie · 18/03/2016 13:50

Too let me know how the appt goes tonight. Sorry you are getting a hard time, it is an emotive issue.

Apple there is no doubt the current prescription set up is unfair in areas. Not least because all prescriptions are free in NI and Scotland but not in England (sorry don't know about Wales) but I do we think to take that against the system and campaign for sensible change not against a particular person. Type 1 diabetes is incredibly difficult to live with as it is.

writingonthewall · 18/03/2016 13:52

If it is sildenafil, they are off patent now so very cheap - I'd just ask for a one-off private script with more on it. Tadalafil etc are pricier. The limit is a guide, not an absolute, so your GP might increase it if you ask.
