aibu to still walk my dog somewhere I've been asked/told not to.

Pita dog will not toilet in our garden, or on concrete (although I'd rather she didn't crap on the pavement anyway). This means I have to take her out several times a day.

There is a small fenced 'park' type thing a few minutes walk away. There is a block of flats one side of it, a row of houses the other. Today while walking my dog (on the lead) a woman called from her ground floor flat to ask where I lived, when I said round the corner she asked if I could leave and muttered something about the council.

It is owned by the council, there is no sign saying dogs aren't allowed, or even that they should be kept on leads. It isn't the block of flats 'communal garden', they have one round the other side, and the ground floor ones have their own garden.

So, aibu to consider sneaking my dog round there for a late night wee? The other nearest grass area is a 15-20 minutes away. Am I doomed to have to do this 3 times a day with a toddler?! And before anyone asks, yes I always pick up poo so it's not that.

Just realised I said 20ft Blush meant 20m. Her flat is on the left of the picture.

your dog, your poo, your garden could be said about the local park, the beach, etc?
Yes it certainly could.

SalemSaberhagen · 16/03/2016 23:16

I feel like I recognise that place sagging! NN?

duckduckquack · 16/03/2016 23:17

Technically you're doing nothing wrong but I suppose she sees you and your dog showing up three times a day only for dog to walk in circles, poo then off yes go. She probably thinks you're taking liberties.

SaggingTits · 16/03/2016 23:19

Yeah exactly why I'd rather my dog didn't crap on the pavement. Dog poo smears can't be confined to gardens though. dogs are allowed in public places so impossible to prevent Grin

Thankyou for the advice about training her to go in the garden. I've tried everything. Have qualifications in Animal Care/management and worked with dogs so have had lots of advice from professionals but it's an extension of being house trained. She's 10 so not a new habit but we only moved recently.

If you take a dog a walk there is no way you can prevent it needing to toilet in a public place.

OP i dont think yabu. It sounds like waste ground, and no specific purpose other than a public patch of grass but i would try getting your dog to go im the garden too, especially for when the weatheris bad!!

SaggingTits · 16/03/2016 23:26

Not NN. Begins with a P Grin

Okay I'll accept I'm being U. My issue was more that it wasn't shit smears that bothered her, it was that we lived the next street away. Her (and other residents) cats shit there, which is fine, that's what cats do.

Ah well, I'm sure the dog will enjoy going to the park/beach 3 times a day instead of one. I am never getting another dog

OP posts:
Peaceandloveeveryone · 16/03/2016 23:28

I don't think YABU at all.

Peaceandloveeveryone · 16/03/2016 23:29

Grin at training dogs not to use lamp posts.

ElderlyKoreanLady · 16/03/2016 23:31

It's not clear from the picture OP but is that grass overlooked by homes on all sides? Facing into it IYSWIM? If so, it's there specifically for the enjoyment of the residents immediately surrounding it and kids are very likely to play there. There's a similar patch in front of my flat. You're not U as such but it would be really poor form to take your dog to toilet there 3 times a day.

It just a bit of landscaping for no specific purpose, I imagine it is there for aesthetics rather than any function. I suppose kids could kick a ball around on it but that would probably annoy the residents more. As long as you clear up I think it is okay, no one having a picnic or 'enjoying' it.

ElderlyKoreanLady · 16/03/2016 23:58

It not having one singular purpose doesn't mean it's fine for the OP to use it as her pooch's designated toilet. The layout strongly suggests that it's there for the use of the immediate residents, of which the OP isn't one. It's a fairly small patch of grass...the OP's dog using it as a toilet 3 times a day indefinitely would really put the residents off using it at all. Like I said, not outright wrong, but definitely poor form.

Trollicking · 17/03/2016 00:00

Fair play OP, I think you are right to agree that you are being unreasonable. It's too public and I think kids might use it. It's mown and tended and not a dog run area.

I can see that the shouty lady was more annoyed because you aren't an immediate Neighbour.

SaggingTits · 17/03/2016 00:03

I did laugh at the 3 shits a day Grin dog eats a good food so only poos once a day. We only do the trespassing in the morning and last thing at night, she normally poos during the day at the dog park, admittedly she does do the odd poo there though.

No, the area isn't all blocked in by flats so it's 'theirs'. As I've said, there's one block, then a row of houses. All either have their own gardens or there is a large communal garden with a park, that can only be accessed by those living in the flats.

Tricky when it comes to council/public property I suppose. My old neighbour wanted the council to get someone to monitor our communal garden (shared by 10 flats) and fine anyone seen walking through with a dog. He thought it was specifically ours when really it's the councils so anyone is free to use it as a walkthrough. Maybe that's where I am U, not understanding when council owned restricts non residents.

OP posts:
RealityCheque · 17/03/2016 00:18

This isn't tricky. Dog piss can smell.

Train your dog to go in your OWN garden and stop being so bloody entitled. Ffs.

WishToBeWell · 17/03/2016 00:20

OP Why is your pic cropped so that the right hand side area cannot be seen Confused

You've uploaded a pic showing the pavement on the left, and only the left hand side of the park bit - makes me wonder if there is a bench or maybe a couple of those rooted children's toys on there? Or houses facing it or something? Can you post a pic showing all of it as if honest, it comes across as if you've tried to cut something out of the pic which would otherwise show you are def BVU in using it as your dog's lav Hmm

ElderlyKoreanLady · 17/03/2016 00:25

I don't mean either blocked in by flats or enclosed. I simply mean that if the surrounding residences face in onto it then its primary purpose is to serve those residents. Having their own gardens is irrelevant.

SaggingTits · 17/03/2016 00:50

God I love mn. I haven't cropped the picture to hide a bench or toys. As I said, all this is our the back in their much bigger communal garden complete with a park, benches and toys. It's just more of the fencing panels you cant see. My phone is rubbish and so had to stand near the light. And it shows that this place is separate to her garden/not connected to the flats.
I've accepted it's unreasonable to go there but some people still have to pick holes Hmm

ElderlyK, I grew up in one of 4 blocks of flats facing a large grass area, no not blocking it off. We never considering it ours, it was public land that anyone could use/walk through. When does it become owned by the closest residents? Totally different if it's a community garden/shared garden which is at the back of your property. Or one that surrounds the block so you enter the garden and the block is in the middle, iyswim. That's 'their garden because it's direct access to their home.

OP posts:
SilverBirchWithout · 17/03/2016 00:54

It is still an urban green space and recreational area. I suspect the fence is there to prevent cars coming up and parking on it.

It's not a toilet area for dogs, just because your pouch likes to poo only on public grassed areas. Sorry OP.

SaggingTits · 17/03/2016 01:03

Yes it's a car park at the other side which was too dark to see. I thought dogs on leads in urban green space was fine, clearly not.

As a separate issue, Shocked at some people upthread saying dogs toileting anywhere (park, beach, pavements) than a garden is annoying. So no dogs in public then? Hmm

OP posts:
lljkk · 17/03/2016 01:53

OP has said her dog has a wee, not poo, on the grass in question.

It's the local cats who leave poo there, from what OP said. Grin Wink

I think thread is mostly on side of ignore & Yanbu, OP, if you did a count of posters each side.

I wonder if there are videos on youtube, ways to train dogs to go in own garden. Worth a look. Would solve a few things for you.
