Top Gear Filming near Cenotaph?

Any one else a bit Confused?

Disrespecting the Cenotaph bad obviously but I can't see how they were?

They were granted the filming and road closures, they must have had to explain what they were intending to do for it to be filmed.

Also (and I'm not not sure if it is true as I'm not from the capital) I was informed once by a chap that it's a popular area for filming as its recognisable, and users of the route are used to closures?

Is it just the papers looking for fodder/ a Top Gear publicity stunt or do I need a slap on the wrist too?

I don't think it's faux outrage, I think its manufactured outrage to boost viewing figures for Top Gear which has always been a pretty crass programme.

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/03/2016 21:11

How fucking dare you accuse my outrage of being faux.

MrsJayy · 14/03/2016 21:12

On victoria Derbydhire a woman was livid going on about Matt should know better becsuse America was allies in the war she was so angry im assuming the stunt creators and directors just put them there what a hoha

HoneyDragon · 14/03/2016 21:38

I think it's ok to be outraged about twatting around next to a war memorial....but from the limited stuff I was the twatting about wasn't in the vicinity of the memorial. Just the standing around stuff. Hence my suspicions like other others that it was a load of inflated bollocks designed to possibly purposefully upset people for press coverage.

OP posts:
RockUnit · 14/03/2016 21:44

I think it was insensitive and unnecessary.

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/03/2016 21:44

Them PR folks have a lot to answer for.

HoneyDragon · 14/03/2016 21:51

What is the plural for Phoenix?

OP posts:
RockUnit · 14/03/2016 21:59

Phoenixes Smile

MrsJayy · 14/03/2016 22:00

Phornixes

MrsHathaway · 14/03/2016 22:00

Bollocks. There's loads of straight roads. Loads of old TG was filmed near my house where we've got a lovely long rural at l stretch that's poker-straight.

They were collecting landmarks and they didn't recognise that some landmarks mean more than others.

MrsJayy · 14/03/2016 22:02

Not sure what a phornix is Blush

CakeNinja · 14/03/2016 22:08

Everything about that programme is distasteful.
Egotistical presenters whoever they are now, massive waste of resources.

But I can't see how it was disrespectful to the cenotaph. I saw the headline news footage and the apology issued by Christ Evans and thought it was a publicity stunt. I still won't be watching!

They havn't broadcast anything yet but you don't like it. so lets ban it ffs.

lorelei9 · 14/03/2016 23:47

I actually do find it distasteful especially as I think it's a publicity stunt

Yes our buses go past, but that is just life carrying on along side a memorial to those who helped our lives carry on.

A tv show picking it as a location for car stunts does seem like choosing a graveyard and the fact it's deliberate annoys me more.

lorelei9 · 14/03/2016 23:49

PS I do think there's a need for a programme about cars but Top Gear seems like it's about penises, no interest in watching that Grin

ginghamcricketbox · 14/03/2016 23:56

OH NO IT GETS WORSE Grin

I heard on R4 that they were given permission to film driving down Whitehall but if they'd asked for permission to do 'stunt driving' it would have been refused.
They're obviously trying to drum up an 'edgy vibe' because the BBC have presold rights to TG abroad and need to keep the brand going. They don't want to be safe TG but I suspect the new production team haven't got a feel for it yet and they're all trying to be more TG than TG without being TG iyswim.

Do I win a prize for the most incomprehensible sentence on MN ever?

ginghamcricketbox · 15/03/2016 00:02

This^^

Damselindestress · 15/03/2016 02:40

This article has footage if anyone wants to see it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-35800187 When I heard about the outrage I thought they had actually disrupted some kind of service not just driven near the Cenotaph. I know it's a memorial but it is near a main road. People are going to drive near it. Apparently it was never intended to be featured in the programme. The only problem is they didn't get permission for stunt driving. I'm not keen on Top Gear so fully expected to be annoyed or offended when I first heard about this but I think the outrage has been exaggerated.

FoxesSitOnBoxes · 15/03/2016 03:12

This has been puzzling me too. Surely they are just doing some driving outside Downing Street? Which happens to be also near the cenotaph? Didn't they do something around the Arc de Triomph at one point? Isn't that a memorial? Such a fuss.

VulcanWoman · 15/03/2016 08:02

Dam thanks for posting that, I wanted to watch the footage before I past judgement, I agree I think it's been exaggerated too.

FatimaLovesBread · 15/03/2016 08:09

Surely that donuts outside Downing Street rather than the Cenotaph? Obviously the Cenotaph is there but it looks more purposefully to be outside Downing Street?

lighteningirl · 15/03/2016 08:12

I don't know what a Phornix is but I think I want one finding any old bandwagon to jump on

rosebiggs · 15/03/2016 08:19

If the footage wasn't meant to be shown then why arrange to perform stunt driving/ donuts there?
