Jilted John, Savile and lyrics

Last night a friend came round and we were talking and she referred to someone as a moron. I winced and said that is not a word I want to hear and it isn't a word I would use personally.

Despite me being po-faced I remembered this song. I think I remember it as supposedly a funny song but I was very young and it played on TOTP, R1 etc. I knew all the words :(.

So, looked it up on Youtube and there it is, introduced by Savile.

I really don't like it.

AIBU to think that lyrics haven't moved forward too much?

DameMargaretofChalfont · 12/03/2016 23:54

Youthecat - mind your back.

The self abuse brigade will be after you before long!!!

Samcro · 12/03/2016 23:54

YouTheCat so right....,y adult child with severe cp can do that sign

Alchemist · 12/03/2016 23:55

I appreciate I have been a bit too PC but I was honestly surprised I could sing it, word for word, without listening to it for many years.

I'm sorry to anyone I've offended.

OP posts:
BombadierFritz · 12/03/2016 23:55

Bianca is a wanker?
(Not quite the same ring to it)

LilacSpunkMonkey · 12/03/2016 23:57

Dame, as I've just explained, I've been through it all with my brother, who went through secondary school being called a 'deli' (short for 'delicate').

I'm not on a high horse, thanks, I also have experience in the area. Different people react differently to certain words.

NewLife4Me · 12/03/2016 23:58

Icompletely

I bat an eye at idiot, because again it is context.
I don't mind if a member of my family call me an idiot I know they have no malice.
However, the malicious tone it was used at school along with moron, imbecile, thick, stupid, and others. The goading, snarling, fun poked, bullying, was abusive and I'll never forget nor forgive.
I have a low IQ and learning difficulties, I don't need any other label.
Well, apart from dyslexia, dyspraxia, and the others.
If I don't object to it and Bogey above, I'm not sure why others do tbh.

YouTheCat · 13/03/2016 00:02

But Dame, anyone can be a wanker. I am quite happy to use a gender-non-specific word for people who really piss me off and wanker really seems to cover it. It doesn't have any negative repercussions as far as I can see and is nicely offensive to people who are being annoying.

IloveAntbuthateDec · 13/03/2016 00:03

I know all the words too OP. I was brought up on Jilted John (and Squeeze). My mother often called me and my brothers a moron too. It was a sign of the times and the world was probably a better place without the PC brigade constantly looking over your shoulder. Jimmy Savile was known as a DJ and Top of the Pops presenter too. Nothing more and nothing less. Times change

LilacSpunkMonkey · 13/03/2016 00:05

Oh, fuck off with your PC Brigade.

I'd like to use YouTheCat's word right now but I'd get deleted.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 13/03/2016 00:10

Youthecat Maybe it's a geographically matter but I find "Idiot" far more acceptable than "Wanker".

To put it in perspepective, where I live and work the word "idiot" is used to define a person who has daft/unrealistic views or expectations.
Nothing more, nothing less.

Yet the term "wanker" is highly offensive and, if I heard a member of my staff use it, they would be pulled aside for an informal chat.

I guess it's a locational matter.

AgentZigzag · 13/03/2016 00:11

' and the world was probably a better place without the PC brigade constantly looking over your shoulder'

Yeah, much better when you could call women/black people/anyone with a disability whatever the fuck you wanted without them having a voice to tell you where to get off Hmm

Was it better when savile was only known as a DJ, presenter and an amazing charity runner too?

Those pesky victims, getting all uppity about their abuse and ruining his good name and your memories.

Samcro · 13/03/2016 00:15

sorry but the op was ott linking JS to a very old and tbh not that good song.\

lets talk about Lola by the kinks.......
how does that fit in now?

LilacSpunkMonkey · 13/03/2016 00:18

Isn't Lola about a transvestite? I don't think it's about a trans-woman.

It's an absolute cracker of a song, as most of the Kinks songs are.

YouTheCat · 13/03/2016 00:20

But Dame, 'idiot' has unpleasant undertones. Wanker doesn't. Wanker can refer to male or female. It isn't a reference to someone's intelligence.

It really isn't locational at all.

I hate words like 'idiot', 'thick', 'moron' etc. They really aren't very nice at all.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 13/03/2016 00:21

The meaning of Lola is still disputed,

The lyric "I'm glad I'm a man - and so's Lola"

Is still disputed 45 years after it was first broadcast.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 13/03/2016 00:21

Bloody good song though!!!!!

Allofaflumble · 13/03/2016 00:22

Norom is a substitute. I expect someone somewhere would be offended by that too.

YouTheCat · 13/03/2016 00:23

What the fuck is 'norom' apart from 'moron' backwards? Hmm

IloveAntbuthateDec · 13/03/2016 00:27

' and the world was probably a better place without the PC brigade constantly looking over your shoulder'

Yeah, much better when you could call women/black people/anyone with a disability whatever the fuck you wanted without them having a voice to tell you where to get off hmm

Umm... Who mentioned black or disabled people except you? Yes it probably was better when Savile was only known as a DJ and presenter. How do you know your childhood "hero" for want of a better word isn't going to turn out to be the vilest person on Earth in the near future? For fucks sake none of us have crystal balls but we all have childhood memories. The word Moron was used during my childhood in much the same vein as cunt is used now. I prefer the word moron tbh.

Fatmomma99 · 13/03/2016 00:28

Jilted John's song was a comedy song when it charted - it was never supposed to be taken seriously. And it's very funny.

Turning Japanese is a song about wanking (it's supposed to be your "come" face). It's not a jokey song.

The Cure now sing "Killing Another" instead of "an Arab", which is a crime against The Outsider (the book the song is based on) and is - to me - political correctness gone mad, because I adored the book. But I will forgive Robert Smith if he has sex with me.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 13/03/2016 00:28

Youthecat

Where I live and work "idiot" is used as a general term for any foolishness:-
You forget your yoghurt at lunch time - you're an idiot

You foolishly put your woolly jumpers on a hot wash - you're an idiot.

It truely is a slightly affectionate term for a fool/wally.

However "wanker" is a taboo term which results in detentions for children and "informal chats" for adults.

That's why It's a locational thing.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 13/03/2016 00:29

PS - Never heard of norom

IPityThePontipines · 13/03/2016 00:31

"I was so upset that I cried, all the way to the chip shop"

Poetry.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 13/03/2016 00:33

Fatmomma Shock I never, never knew that about Turning Japenese!!!
