Jilted John, Savile and lyrics

Last night a friend came round and we were talking and she referred to someone as a moron. I winced and said that is not a word I want to hear and it isn't a word I would use personally.

Despite me being po-faced I remembered this song. I think I remember it as supposedly a funny song but I was very young and it played on TOTP, R1 etc. I knew all the words :(.

So, looked it up on Youtube and there it is, introduced by Savile.

I really don't like it.

AIBU to think that lyrics haven't moved forward too much?

Moron was the word which stood out for me

but you ignored the words "puff" "Slag" "bitch" "tart" "slut" along with the singer alluding to acts of severe violence Confused

OP - Get a grip!!!!

ITS A SONG OF AN ERA - AND A DECENT DITTY TO BOOT!!!!

AgentZigzag · 12/03/2016 23:31

It says in the comments that the Ian Dury song was written as a protest Samcro, so he wasn't using it in an unthinking way.

'You have no idea, do you?'

Who's that to Sausages?

AgentZigzag · 12/03/2016 23:32

No need to fucking shout DameM Hmm

Bogeyface · 12/03/2016 23:32

Moron is not used in the way it used to be, I would guess that vast majority of people dont know what it used to mean. I have never understood the pearl clutching over its use tbh, and have only ever witnessed it on MN.

And I agree that there are far more offensive words in that song.

TattyCat · 12/03/2016 23:33

Yawn. Times change. So what should we DO about a song from the 80s not being politically correct then?

You can still buy 'Love Thy Neighbour' on DVD. Have you SEEN it?

Bogeyface · 12/03/2016 23:33

Oh and I say the above as the mother of someone who has brain damage, so yes I do understand how insulting words such as "Spaz" are. But I also understand that in 100 years most of the people saying it wont know its entymology.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 12/03/2016 23:35

Agent - I was quoting the OP!!!!

And, as a member of the peerage, I'll raise my voice when I so desire!!!!

(because if I don't you'll never hear it over the sound of my pearls clinking on my champagne flute!!)

Ledkr · 12/03/2016 23:36

What does it mean? I didn't realise it was hugely offensive, I call dh that all the time in jest. Grin that said I call him cunt too and he me.
We are a pair if right cunts grin]

YouTheCat · 12/03/2016 23:36

I just remember feeling really sorry for anyone called Gordon at the time.

Language has moved on from the 70s/80s. Words used then, in a perfectly innocent way, are no longer acceptable (which is fine, I have no problem with progress).

If it was a current song that would be different but it's over 30 years old.

NewLife4Me · 12/03/2016 23:37

Surely it's context.
I make no secret of the vile schooling I received and the horrible things the teachers did and said to me.
Believe me I have never met a person who is more offended and upset by the word "Moron" but this song was years ago and a good song of it's time.
Completely different context to emotional abuse.
I used to wonder if Julie and Gordon got married.

Isn't their a poster Jilted John's Julie?

DameMargaretofChalfont · 12/03/2016 23:40

In it's time a moron was an idiot, a fool, a bufoon, nothing more sinister or demeaning.

Christ how I hate todays PC brigade.

Get over yourselves!

AgentZigzag · 12/03/2016 23:41

NO, THE BIT YOU PUT IN CAPS DAMEM.

'And, as a member of the peerage, I'll raise my voice when I so desire!!!!'

Although of course I bow and scrape to your obvious superiority

Grin
LilacSpunkMonkey · 12/03/2016 23:42

PC Brigade? Hmm

I understand being PC as not being an offensive twat but horses for courses.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 12/03/2016 23:43

According to the English dictionary a moron is:-

A stupid person:
"we can’t let these thoughtless morons get away with mindless vandalism every weekend"

Happier now OP???

7Days · 12/03/2016 23:45

Well its a bit of an update moment isn't it. Times have changed. Sometimes it comes to a head?

LilacSpunkMonkey · 12/03/2016 23:45

No, that's not the original meaning.

It refers to someone with mild learning disabilities.

It's not nice.

YouTheCat · 12/03/2016 23:46

As far as I'm aware, 'moron' is a classification of intelligence.

Samcro · 12/03/2016 23:46

its a horrid word

Alchemist · 12/03/2016 23:48

It is time for a name change really.

Yes, my name is Julie.

OP posts:
Samcro · 12/03/2016 23:48

the 70's were not the time of good taste and I was young then ,,,,,and a donny fan

Icompletelyunderstand · 12/03/2016 23:48

And in its time 'idiot' was an official medical term used to describe people with low IQ and learning difficulties, yet we happily use the word idiot these days to casually describe anyone who commits an act of crass stupidity and no-one bats any eyelid. Confused

Bogeyface · 12/03/2016 23:48

Moron was a technical term for someone with severe learning disabilities, but that was a very very long time ago. As I said, my son has learning disabilities but even I think that sometimes people are looking for things to be offended by.

Personally I (and my son) prefer to save our energy being pissed off at the fact that he has done really well on job applications, right up until they find out that he has cerebal palsy. That is happening to him RIGHT NOW, so people using a word that used to mean something else is really not on our radar of things to get fucked off by.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 12/03/2016 23:52

That's shit about your son Bogeyface, hope he has better luck soon.

My youngest brother used to get the same because he has issues with social skills and went to a special primary school and special unit at secondary. All the so-called 'inclusive' retailers wouldn't touch him when they realised. Only Argos and then Morrisons took a chance on him. He's been at Morrisons for 10 years now. Got his '10 Year' bonus at Christmas.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 12/03/2016 23:53

Bogeyface has it.

Her, and her son's experiences, are worth so much more than someone being on their high horse than a word which had a different meaning in the 70's and 80's.

Active discrimination is abhorrent compared to a word which featured in a song of it's time.

YouTheCat · 12/03/2016 23:53

I prefer to call someone who is behaving in an utterly stupid manner as a 'wanker'.

I reckon that'll do.
