To think changing bedsheets once a week is ott

Another week has whizzed past, feels like yesterday I changed all the beds. They look and smell fine, surely if I only change beds once every 2 weeks we will still all survive. I could spend 30 minutes with my feet up drinking tea once in a while. Aibu?

Gabilan simultaneously, I think. the hot rinse gets rid of any smells.

Lweji · 11/03/2016 21:58

Is that before or after cooking salmon and opal fruits in it exwife

Along with vodka. Reportedly.

Gabilan · 11/03/2016 22:03

And the potty in the cutlery drawer. No need for cookers, toasters, washing machines or tumble dryers. Sensibly organised, the diswasher will do it all.

LeaLeander · 11/03/2016 22:18

There are people on here with OCD and too much time on their hands. Every three days! I bet you iron them as well. Sorry, I really do not mean to sound offensive but life is too short ...

Too some of us, life is too short to wallow in grimy bedding.

Funny how the only people slinging insults are those who don't change their linens very often.

Why do so many of you feel threatened by people who have more rigorous cleaning routines? It seems to me if you were so OK with going weeks or months between washings, you wouldn't feel the need to lash out at those who wash more frequently.

(No OCD here, also employed 50 hours/week in salaried job, run own side business and have numerous other responsibilities/endeavors. Just enjoy fresh linen.)

Postchildrenpregranny · 11/03/2016 22:27

Weekly
Ì strip the bed, DH makes it up. I think he'd rebel if I made it more often .
Ditto towels -you dry a clean body on them for goodness sake.

pinotnoirismyjam · 11/03/2016 22:30

It might be considered grim by others, but I'm a fortnightly girl. I love fresh sheets, but I live in a flat with limited drying capability in the wet weather Smile

Gwenhwyfar · 12/03/2016 00:11

"Obv if people ill and sweaty as often as necessary. Have been know to have to change five times a night."

What? Sweat won't kill you, you know.

jeremyisahunt · 12/03/2016 00:20

I don't own a washing machine.

LeaLeander · 12/03/2016 00:46

What? Sweat won't kill you, you know.

Why does it have to be a matter of health? Honestly is there that great a divide between people who think only in terms of "if it won't kill you it's frivolous faff and you must have OCD" and people who enjoy clean clothing, linens and households?

To the seldom-sheet-changers, is there anything you derive aesthetic pleasure from? Food? Drink? Scenery? Gardening? Music? Body treatments or massage or facials? Or is everything bare to the bone, no-frills, eat off paper plates and only the bare minimum necessary to survive, sit on the floor in the dark and drink water from the cistern, because after all none of that will kill you, you know.

Nooo, fortnightly changers have been described as grim and skanky but haven't taken offence. It's a bit of fun, we won't ever meet so no harm done.

No ones threatened. It's shock. Twice weekly sheet washing and sheets being ironed!! My brain just can't process it. No one's lashing out, you seem very sensitive and defensive. Each to their own, it's fascinating reading about other people's lives.

MissRabbitHasTooManyJobs · 12/03/2016 06:41

I also think it's fascinating to read about other peoples lives!
Whatever our differences may be it's still interesting to me, is also a bit like therapy Grin

HormonalHeap · 12/03/2016 06:51

If I didn't have a cleaner I'd do it once a week. But we're paying her so twice a week here fresh ironed sheets. (Kids once a week thoughGrin)

Mousefinkle · 12/03/2016 07:43

There's four beds in my house to change and since DC are all under six I'm the only one capable of doing it. It's probably my least favourite chore so yes, the DC beds sometimes go 2-3 weeks between changes. I change mine once a week. My theory is adults sweat more and are generally a bit grosser than small children. Plus I do enjoy getting into bed when the sheets have just been changed a lot. If I had a maid I'd insist they were all done weekly but I just can't be arsed. I actually get angry doing the duvet covers.

NightWanderer · 12/03/2016 07:57

Ok, in the interests on Mumsnet I actually timed myself and it took me 3 min 37 sec to strip a single bed and put on a clean mattress cover, fitted sheet, pillow case and duvet cover. I wasn't rushing either.

decisionsdecisions123 · 12/03/2016 08:11

Its pretty difficult to do it when you live in a small place with no garden to hang out washing and no tumble dryer. All your washing has to be dried indoors and bed linen means its all draped around chairs and the likes to have a big enough space to dry. I don't want to walk home after a tiring day at work to a living room that looks like its been covered up ready to be painted. Also, when I take my bed sheets off I think its a good idea to give it a few hours without anything on it to give it a chance to air (did I just invent that idea myself?) so I hate changing bedding and no way will I ever do it every week. I do pillow cases every one or two weeks but the rest of it stays for longer.

SatsukiKusakabe · 12/03/2016 08:19

I roared with laughter at sensibly organised the dishwasher will do it all. I love Mumsnet Grin

I'm at home during the week but change the beds at the weekend so it doesn't make much difference. Also it's not just on me, I'll strip beds and wash, dh will make them up (I'll do the kids but ours is a king and I have pain problems so struggle to do it without causing a flare up) I'll hang sheets in the evening, put away in the morning.

I put a wash in pretty much every evening so it doesn't matter really what's in it, sheets or clothes.

I also do that thing I read on here of putting cover and sheets into one pillowcase so easier to find everything in cupboard. So simple and obvious but I used to spend ages trying to find the right sheet for the right bed.

SatsukiKusakabe · 12/03/2016 08:22

When I lived in a small flat luckily my kitchen had enough floor space for a rack as did bathroom so they used to hang in there overnight, so it never took over, but it is annoying.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/03/2016 08:32

"Also, when I take my bed sheets off I think its a good idea to give it a few hours without anything on it to give it a chance to air (did I just invent that idea myself?)"

You're supposed to take the duvet off every morning to air the sheet and the duvet (I can't do it because I have nowhere to hang the duvet), but I'm not sure about leaving the mattress with nothing on it, wouldn't it allow dust to get in?

Gwenhwyfar · 12/03/2016 08:34

"When I lived in a small flat luckily my kitchen had enough floor space for a rack as did bathroom "

That's not a small flat then. I barely have room to move around in my kitchen and bathroom and only have space for a rack in the living room. I can hang the duvet cover over a door, but it takes 2 days even with the heating on.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/03/2016 08:36

"Why does it have to be a matter of health? Honestly is there that great a divide between people who think only in terms of "if it won't kill you it's frivolous faff and you must have OCD" and people who enjoy clean clothing, linens and households? "

Changing the bed 5 times a night is extremely wasteful, not just bad for the environment but also a waste of your own time.

SatsukiKusakabe · 12/03/2016 08:45

It was a small flat in that it was a one bedroom, but it did have a long rather than square kitchen so I could just about squeeze a rack in there. I was just explaining how I managed to keep up doing it regularly without having to have washing everywhere, and that I was 'lucky' in this respect.

It wasn't a criticism of anyone else who doesn't have space, it was "I was lucky when I lived in a flat I didn't have to have washing everywhere that would have been harder". Confused

Sprongpicnic · 12/03/2016 09:03

I do mine once a week. I like to rotate the different coloured duvet sets. Easily pleased.

Louise43210 · 12/03/2016 09:11

I'm sitting here quietly and not admitting anything :-). :-)

LeaLeander · 12/03/2016 09:21

Are there no laundromats/launderettes for those without sufficient drying space? Just curious.

Crumblevision · 12/03/2016 09:24

Every Friday without fail. I am now, however, aiming for every Mon and Thurs 😂. I love love love getting into bed at night when the sheets have been changed
