To think changing bedsheets once a week is ott

Another week has whizzed past, feels like yesterday I changed all the beds. They look and smell fine, surely if I only change beds once every 2 weeks we will still all survive. I could spend 30 minutes with my feet up drinking tea once in a while. Aibu?

In an ideal world I'd get around to changing them every week, as fresh crisp sheets are so lovely. But given we have no tumble drier and nowhere to hang wet sheets except over doors, it's a lot less frequent than that.

Plus, y'know...cba. No one ever died of a bit of sweat.

Kithulu · 10/03/2016 16:34

Well I change mine after a steamy sex session.......so about once a month 😜

papayasareyum · 10/03/2016 16:38

no more than once every three weeks. The bed is clean and we are clean. It's such a waste of water to wash them weekly unless you're very dirty after a day of hard graft or something

LaContessaDiPlump · 10/03/2016 16:54

There are 10 times more bacteria in, on and around your body than there are cells of your body - it's something like 10 to the 14 body cells versus 10 to the 15 bugs. From a cell analysis perspective you are barely there.

Lweji · 10/03/2016 17:00

From a bacterial point of view we are planet size.

Lweji · 10/03/2016 17:08

This sort of attitude makes me LOL, especially when the person in question is using her precious life energy to read and post on Mumsnet!

As far as I'm concerned, MN is much more interesting and worthwhile. Even laundry threads.

ManneryTowers · 10/03/2016 17:10

Pillowcases in the freezer?! I'm intrigued!

wiltingfast · 10/03/2016 17:15

I love clean sheets but hate laundry. I work ft and my weekend is packed enough as it is without doing anything but the essential housework.

Every 3-4 weeks here.

LeaLeander · 10/03/2016 17:19

I put my nightdresses and lounging gowns in the freezer during hot, humid weather as well. Nice to take a cool bath or shower, pat dry and slip into a sleek chilled gown and crawl onto clean smooth sheets.

I don't use A/C for a variety of reasons, though my home is equipped with it, so these little tactics while fleeting are quite pleasant.

As to time, I guess it's priorities. I work 50 hours a week at a salaried job, commute 40 miles three days at least, have a thriving side business, share eldercare for an ailing relative, do all house, admin and yard work for two residences, have perennial beds & a greenhouse, have a decent social life and two dogs. And still find plenty of time to waste on the internet and watching DVDs! ;)

Toria2014 · 10/03/2016 17:34

Usually when the duvet peels itself back and invites me in I think about changing the sheets Wink

Itisbetternow · 10/03/2016 17:44

When I'm having company :-)

TwentyCupsOfTea · 10/03/2016 17:45

Ideally weekly, can go up to maybe 10 days.

I don't own an iron Grin

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 10/03/2016 18:18

Is it just me that reads these threads, sees the posts that are presumably jokes like "when the sheets get shiny" or "twice a year" or "daily" or "dust sheets on pillow cases" and laughs....... Then has a serious pearl clutching moment of what if they were serious?!? Shock

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 10/03/2016 18:21

My most annoying thing is to strip the bed..Leave it to air then forget till I drag myself up to bed and have to make it when I want to get in it.

I've done that on far more occasions than I like to remember. I cried once - I was pregnant, hormonal and very tired.

tobysmum77 · 10/03/2016 18:23

Every 2-3 weeks. Perhaps I'll make it onto 'a life of grime'.....?

tobysmum77 · 10/03/2016 18:25

fresh towels daily is a must

catbasilio · 10/03/2016 18:29

Save the world and water. Change sheets less frequently. I do mine every 2-4 weeks.

Queenbean · 10/03/2016 18:49

Well I change mine after a steamy sex session.......so about once a month 😜

Do you jump up just after the moment has finished and change the sheets?!

SatsukiKusakabe · 10/03/2016 19:45

queenbean I sometimes change mine half way through.

eatsleephockeyrepeat · 10/03/2016 21:10

I don't wash my hair once a week, let alone my bed sheets.

MissRabbitHasTooManyJobs · 10/03/2016 21:24

Jeez I'm clearly in the minority but glad.
Ok mine is excessive but some people here have hygiene issues if they think it's fine to leave wet towels festering for weeks, and pyjamas on for days, but hey that's just my opinion.
I'm also the mum who's dc have a complete fresh uniform on for school every day, they look clean and fresh and both are scruffs Grin

This is something that has been instilled to me by my own mum so I know no different. Yes my ironing pile is like Everest and I probably do make too much work for myself but would rather be at this end of the spectrum than the other end.

This thread has opened my eyes ALOT and made me realise my OCD is more severe than I thought :(
Either that or the majority of mumsnetters are complete slatterns and proud.
Awaits flaming...

Bettercallsaul1 · 10/03/2016 21:51

I'm always amazed at how popular this topic is - it's the virtual equivalent of washing our dirty linen in public!

CamboricumMinor · 11/03/2016 07:40

Once a week is normal isn't it? As for it taking half an hour, the DCs strip their own beds and remake them so it's a quick job for us all. Once they are about 7 they can usually do their own can't they?

abigail12 · 11/03/2016 07:59

Oh my God I'm not even going to say how rarely often I change my sheets! All I can say is we have no tumble drier or space to dry large items in the winter...

Galdos · 11/03/2016 08:00

It depends, but generally once a fortnight. If DS drools in his sleep a lot or something his get changed more often. If my lover comes round, mine get changed more often.

DD1 changes her own if chivvied. DD2 changes hers when she bores of the duvet cover pattern. She also puts everything in the wash basket every day, even if only worn for a few hours (except knickers: there must be a secret stash soemwhere ...). DS looks baffled if he is told/asked, as in 'that's your job!'

Towels: sniff'em regularly, and washed when they fail the test - probably about every 2/3 weeks.

In summer and sweating, or if anyone has a cold/cough, changed more often.

When I was young my mother still had a mangle, and that put me off 100% cotton sheets and too much washing. Setting fire to myself with static put me off nylon sheets. Modern polycotton sheets however are a dream.
