To be fed up with selfies on Facebook and other rubbish...

I don't use FB much. I belong to some groups linked to my work and consequently log in maybe once a day. Many of my FB friends are work colleagues. And I am sick to death of seeing photos of their kids. Day after day we see them eating their breakfast, tying their shoelaces, sucking at the breast, (aka breastfeeding) with almost every moment of their lives on social media. And that's without the parents loading up selfies of themselves, posing, telling us all 'Look at me, aren't I great!' These are adult professional women in their 40s, almost pouting at the camera, looking out from under their fringes with Big Eyes. Yes, I hide their posts a lot, but I can't figure out the mindset behind these people who think everyone wants to know everything about their lives and see photos of them all the time. Why? Just why?

Uh, I'd suggest you either don't follow their news feeds, defriend them or maybe just leave fb altogether.
You aren't obliged to look at anything you don't want and if your friends lives offend you so much I'd suggest you find new friends...good luck with that.

I think it's great that they post all these ridiculous selfies and post other gems such as "copy and paste this on your wall if you love your daughter".

It saves me the valuable time I might have spent getting to know them!

And, quick question: if you're reading this and you do these things: why do you do it?

I don't want to look at selfies but enjoy seeing photos of my friends and families children. I think a lot of people like seeing friends and family and knowing what people are up to and sharing their lives. Other people don't like using Facebook like that, obviously you fall into the latter group.

Just hide people or delete them. What they post is up to them. I expect if they read this they would think 'why are we friends on Facebook if she's not interested in my life?'

What do you use Facebook for, out of interest?

I use fb to keep in touch with family, as we are scattered across the world now. Photos of the dc are for the benefit of gps, aunties and uncles. Just unfollow any one you don't want to see.

Um, I don't think Facebook is the place for you. Obviously people posting things upset you. Maybe try MySpace, people don't post there anymore, you can sit there looking at a blank newsfeed which might please you more?

I use FB for work. I am in a couple of professional groups where we provide info and mutual support because we are freelancers. Some of those people are now FB friends.

I have no objection to photos of 'real' friends family pics so we keep in touch. I don't see the point in posting 6 photos a day of your kids eating their meals or doing whatever kids do over a day.

I also don't 'get' how anyone can post a posy photo of themselves - often just a headshot- which is clearly uploaded with the intention of 'Look how lovely I am folks...' and not linked to anything they are posting about.

Morbid fascination :) I can't believe the the self-obsession and shameless selfies they post . I enjoy the outrage as it merges nicely with the shameless "Kylie flashes side-boob" and "X flaunts her faultless body on Bondi Beach" part of my Daily Fail surfing.

I call it my benign mocking pastime.

Hide everything other than the groups you use from your news feed and get on with your own life. Problem solved.

This is bound to degenerate into yet another anti-Facebook thread. I dont post selfies etc but I find the "why oh why" comment tedious, everyone is different and will enjoy doing different things, that's not too hard to understand is it?

I kind of get what you mean about baby photos etc. I like seeing photos of my friends children. I don't like my news feed filled with 20 almost identical photos every single day.

Yes but there's thinking selfies are tacky or crappy or whatever as I'm sure a lot of people do, and then there's being 'fed up' of it and 'sick to death' etc. That's the point where you're letting other people's shit that is actually nothing at all to do with you (not in a MYOB way, but just that it's random colleague's stuff) affect your own peace of mind.

Yes Flaming.... I enjoy watching my old friends from high school being total narcissists. I know..... I just can't bring myself to block them. I'll never see them again, but enjoy seeing the spectacle. As I said, morbid fascination.

I'm sure I'm not alone on this. It's like rubber-necking... I've got one old friend who posts her making her food every day.... I know I should block block block BUT her recipes are actually quite good and I once sipped and clicked and told her she should write a recipe book! How great am I!! Rubber necking, yet encouraging! I could have sparked an empire!

So, in essence, I'm a terrible voyeur but also encouraging of a budding entrepreneur! On balance, that makes me feel ok! :)

Facebook for me is about keeping in touch with what friends and family are up to and sharing and celebrating their special moments... However I can't stand narcissistic daily selfie updates, needy posts or chain mail post ' I'm seeing how many people care about me and will copy and paste...' Etc etc those people get hidden quick sharp but I guess everyone has their own idea of what Facebook is for.

Just hide the annoying ones and follow some pages/people that interest you instead. Facebook is fully customisable to your own personal tastes and requirements! I have a friend who posts 359 million pictures of her kids every day, so I just unfollowed her. We are still friends and I can look at her page whenever I like but she doesn't show up in my news feed.

I use LinkedIn for work related networking and am a member of several groups there where we exchange tips etc. I'm a freelancer too and networking is essential, I wouldn't use FB for it.
But FB is also essential, for keeping in touch with my extended family and ex-colleagues etc across the globe. I understand the reasons certain friends need to post so many selfies or photos of their kids, they need to, and as their friend I support them.
So, yup, LinkedIn for work and FB for friends/family.

I came off a few weeks ago because I felt I spent too much of my life looking at selfies and what someone is thinking/having for tea, people boasting etc... I wish I could just hide it but the only way I don't log in compulsively is to deactivate. The other reason I left is because I felt myself doing some of these same annoying behaviours without realising! People see others doing it and follow suit subconsciously, and before you know it it's widespread! I feel free without it.

In your case I would just hide the main offenders.

I deal with this by not doing bloody Facebook.

Seriously, if it pisses you off. Don't do it. Sorted.

Why don't you use Linked In for your work things and stay off FB?
