AIBU to refuse to wash DH's nasty stinky handkerchiefs?

DH has always used handkerchiefs and I've always hated them - nasty, unhygienic wrinkled things .

He always has one in his pocket and at bedtime he transfers it to under his pillow (boak...)

He's a sniffling sort of person - always blowing his nose loudly (usually when I'm trying to talk to him, which also annoys me!)

I've tried to convince him to use tissues, but he won't.

He used to stick them in the laundry basket with the whites until one day, when I was ironing a nice linen white blouse of mine I noticed that there were bits of sticky green snot on it, which had obviously been transferred in the wash (more boak...)

Since then I've told him that he has to keep them separate and wash them himself at 60c/90c and they are not going in the family wash since lots of the rest of the washing gets done at 30c/40c as it's not really dirty, just used.
I've also said I'm not touching them - taking them out of pockets, or retrieving them from under the pillow!
I wouldn't expect him to collect/handle my used tissues, so I'm not sure why this is any different?

Now he's started putting them in with a coloured wash of his own at weekends, but is always making snide remarks about how 'petty' I am being.

I am a man here on Mumsnet. I think your DH is totally out of order. Tissues are the way to go or he washes his own snotty hankies. I'd not want anyone to touch my uses tissues.
I really do think he needs to join the present day and use tissues.

I'm surprised anyone still uses hankies. However, you need a new machine and/or detergent if snot is still there after washing.

I "cured" dh of using revolting proper handkerchiefs very early on in our relationship. I really think I might have dumped him if he hadn't stopped. They really turn my stomach.

I have bunged snotty hankies in the general wash for years. I have never ever had an issue with snot transferring to anything else. Do you was everyone's pants separately too? Tissues are horrid things.

My DH still uses cloth hankies on a day to day basis, but when he has a cold he uses tissues. The cloth hankies I soak in biological detergent, then rinse and add to a white wash. The bio detergent digests away the snot and therefore it doesn't get transferred to the washing machine. It's not a big deal.

So you could suggest he soaks his hankies before adding them to the machine.

My OH uses cotton hankies but they get washed by him, separately on a 60 wash. I refuse to touch them.

Ugh. Carrying a bundle of snot around in your pocket. 😷

Seriously who uses a proper hankies now days?? Disgusting things, it's like using a material sanitary towel and washing it with other clothes! Just no.
I would issue him with an ultimatem!
Box of tissues or relationship over, I feel that strongly!

My DS has fabric hankies because the little blighter shreds paper tissues in his pocket.
BTW, I have learned through experience that Kleenex don't end up as dust if they are accidently left in a pocket through the wash. Just a damp folded rectangle.

I get DS to put them in a net wash bag and they go in a hot wash with flannels and towels. And I don't handle them.

For those asking why people use cotton ones.....I cant use paper hankies as it makes the hayfever worse so i use the cotton ones.

He needs to suck it up and wash his own snot rags.
I remember my mum boiling hers and my dads in an old pan on the cooker.

Get him to change them more frequently? Soak them in a nappy bucket with a detergent first?
Does he have a medical issue? The snot sounds extreme! Nasal drippage?

I don't see why they are any differ et to putting dirty knickers/pants in the wash. All end up with some degree of detritus and bodily fluids on them.

I think Yabu given you probably handle his pants and wash them with everything else. I'd rather have snot on my hand than shit.

OMG.

In 2016, that some people still carry snot filled cloths in their pockets is beyond belief.

I can't even bear people using a tissue and not throwing it away. So disgusting. My 13 year old can't remember his reception class teacher without mentioning that she used to blow her nose and then put the tissue up her sleeve. Bleeeeeurgh.

YANBU. I cured DP of using handkerchiefs early in our relationship too. I can't think of many things more rank than carrying used snot rags around in your pocket or leaving them lying around the house (puke, not envy).

Why do male posters feel the need to disclose their sex?

Knickers/pants are washed separately to other clothes too as are towels/bedding. Some things need a higher temperature wash.

DH uses hankies too, which I hate. He's responsible for washing them separately.
