AIBU to be terrified of a Hollywood/Brazilian wax?

So I'm quite hairy down there.

And now after 5 years of no sex, there might be something happening soon.

I'm far too conscious of how hairy I am to just go au natural and shaving and trimming makes me horribly itchy.

So a wax is my only option but I'm TERRIFIED. I've heard such horror stories about how much it hurts, I'm so so scared.

I'm also afraid of getting like bumps or infections in the hair follicles because my hair is quite thick and the skin is quite sensitive.

Hollywood is the way forward. I'm a complete wuss so have it down to a fine art - two paracetamol, one ibuprofen and honestly it hardly hurts. Never had an infection or rash after. Just go to a good salon and a recommended therapist.

saraah2354 · 06/03/2016 13:51

I can't believe the amount of people saying veet itches, not sure how long you're all leaving it on for.
I've used veet on every hair possible and never found it itchy or burny. I never find it itches when the hair grows back either.
I'm a cheerleader so have to keep my legs and arms free of hair

Fluffyears · 06/03/2016 15:04

I have thick wiry hair that grows super fast. I got a Hollywood for going on holiday once so i wouldn't have to worry about showing any fur in my swimming costume. It was OK as the therapist was excellent and put me at my ease. I took painkillers an hour before hand and she told me to take a deep breath in then
Let it out in a 'whoosh' as she took the strip off and that really helped. Honestly I am a wuss and managed to get through it. I liked the smooth clean feeling and will do it for next holiday.

BennyTheBall · 06/03/2016 15:10

My therapist uses hot wax, not sure what type. I don't find it painful but I do have to brace myself for the labia bit.

RapunzelStyle · 06/03/2016 17:57

OP, I am so incredibly jealous of you getting your first wax! It's an amazing feeling, you feel so much lighter and smoother, even walking around feels nicer! I LOVED that post-wax glow! Watch the scenes of the big bang theory where amy gets waxed on youtube - hilarious!

YY to 2 ibuprofen and some wine before hand. Personally I enjoy the pain - it's a bit like squeezing a big spot. So satisfying!! It's over in about 4 minutes as well.

And don't feel that just because you got waxed, you have to go ahead with sex - do that when you're ready. If you start waxing though, you have to put up with the "in between " regrowth stage so timing sex becomes a thing! Wax the whole lot off and then maybe maintain with an epilator. (and tweezers!)

For me, I eventually got a Boots smooth skin and am now lasering mine off completely and permanently at home! Happy days!

Good luck and enjoy!!

Maybe I am just old (late 40s) but I find it really weird that anyone would feel that their pubic hair needs to be waxed in order to have sex. It's really sad that some women feel the need to do this.

MulderitsmeX · 06/03/2016 18:38

If you trim the hair to about .75 cm it should be ok. I always just focus on the fact it will be over soon!

As a more long term option Laser is AMAZING - had it done about 4 years ago on various places and I occasionally shave a couple of small stragglers but basically don't need to do anything anymore. Much recommends

Bearbehind · 06/03/2016 18:45

Seriously- if you are really quite hairy then waxing everything won't last long.

Do you remember the playdoh head men where the hair pushes through- that'll be your fanny in a few weeks Grin

Better to be neatly trimmed.

LifeofI · 06/03/2016 18:49

if you are so terrified then dont get one, its not like its the only way to remove hair from there.

specialsubject · 06/03/2016 18:58

it will hurt. If you want to do it for you, that's fine. It will hurt but that's your choice. For some reason people do choose pain voluntarily - tattoos, high heels, waxing.

it's not a hygiene issue as long as you bath or shower daily.

any prospective partner who demands this can be told to take the proverbial long walk off a short pier.

toolonglurking · 06/03/2016 19:17

If you go to a decent place, a Brazilian or Hollywood shouldn't hurt. It's uncomfortable, but if you go to a professional and they use hot wax rather than that awful wax you take off with material strips, it's no drama.

kali110 · 06/03/2016 21:02

sooperdooper me neither! I've used veet down there, along with pre wax strips and my epilator!
Never had any problem!
The only problem i ever have with itching or ingrown hair is if i shave.

captainfarrell · 06/03/2016 22:01

Just get the edges waxed. No need to wax all off, slightly creepy as I have prepubescent girls and I have no inclination to look like one in my 40s! I have had hot wax and it's painful but quick and a great result. These days I use cold wax strips and DIY. Don't know if my pain tolerance has changed but it's not that bad and lasts weeks, cheap too. I use Nair cold wax strips.

Katinkka · 06/03/2016 22:06

What? People have this done while on their period? Shock
I just can't imagine that.

I had it done once, it was crap and I was still hairy but it was a shitty salon.

BennyTheBall · 06/03/2016 22:15

I have had it done whilst on my period - many times!

I just poke the tampon string completely inside.

80sMum · 06/03/2016 22:24

It sounds hideously painful! I know I couldn't do it. And doesn’t it look a bit strange?? Like a child who isn't a child?

jeremyisahunt · 06/03/2016 22:37

OP, pluck one of your pubic hairs on your labia out. Times that by 100. That is what it will feel like.

Never again. Sad

jeremyisahunt · 06/03/2016 22:38

Out of interest, does anyone know what porn stars do? Their bits are always as bald as a badger!

ginplease83 · 06/03/2016 23:07

It's fine!! Got for it and make sure they do your bum crack too! Amazing!

BennyTheBall · 07/03/2016 00:18

I can assure people concerned about 'looking like a child' is really not an issue. My bald fanny does not make me look prepubescent.

And plucking one labial hair is, bizarrely, much worse than having them deftly ripped out en masse by someone else.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/03/2016 01:22

Oh, mine does, if I could be bothered to shave my legs too I'd look about 7.
Getting rid of pubes de-ages your fanny dontcha know.

Wellthatsit · 07/03/2016 08:25

Some men like us to be as hairy as possible. All this angst could be a waste.of energy if he is in that category.

Personally, I would be ditching someone who wanted me to shave/wax (I realise you haven't said this is the case).

If you're scared of waxing, don't do it. Be hairy and proud.

saraah2354 · 07/03/2016 13:54

My partner has his crack and sack waxed so i don't feel like I'm doing anything for himGrin

captainfarrell · 07/03/2016 14:35

Private parts are not the most attractive, I think a bit of hair is a good thing. I wouldn't want my man to have no hair down there so why would he want mine like that. Makes me think of those hairless cats(no pussy jokes!!!!)

chanelfreak · 07/03/2016 15:00

I dislocated my elbow and broke my arm running in the forest and had to hike 45 mins back to civilisation - my first (and only) Brazilian was 100 times more painful than that. To be fair, the therapist used strip wax and left me bleeding and patchy, but never EVER again. Veet all the way melted fanjos unite
