AIBU to be terrified of a Hollywood/Brazilian wax?

So I'm quite hairy down there.

And now after 5 years of no sex, there might be something happening soon.

I'm far too conscious of how hairy I am to just go au natural and shaving and trimming makes me horribly itchy.

So a wax is my only option but I'm TERRIFIED. I've heard such horror stories about how much it hurts, I'm so so scared.

I'm also afraid of getting like bumps or infections in the hair follicles because my hair is quite thick and the skin is quite sensitive.

Why is every so anti-Veet/Immac? The bikini line ones are fine, surely? There's a rinse off one you can use in the shower as well.

What have I missed? Confused

ridemesideways · 06/03/2016 01:23

Defensive about their expensive salon waxes when they could have been doing it at him, pain-free all along!

Joking - waxing lasts longer if you can bear it.

ridemesideways · 06/03/2016 01:25

home - though I'm feminist about wild pubes actually, I hate them all equally no matter who they are on...

PortobelloRoad · 06/03/2016 01:25

I'm lasered now but I had waxes for years, it's fine! Don't get me wrong, it hurts like fuck, but imo it wasn't impossible. The first one is the worst!

Make sure you get it done somewhere good though, it's worth paying a bit extra for ime.

The best thing to do if you're really apprehensive is as them to do a basic first, see how you handle it and then go from there, full hollywood on the first go might be a bit much if you're sensitive.

saraah2354 · 06/03/2016 01:28

Nair makes me super sensitive but veet has the opposite effect and smells nicer imo

Katarzyna79 · 06/03/2016 01:32

firstive got no choice hygiene reasons related to religion if it wasn't for that I dont think id do it hair was better texture before.

but ive been using veet since I was a young teen never did me any harm, wel, bit sore from not being careful with timing lol, but other than that no infections .

you could get a reaction but that's the same with waxing and shaving too. at least with veet you can do a strand test like hair dye lool

saraah2354 · 06/03/2016 01:36

I even use veet around the bum area Blush never had an issue

sykadelic · 06/03/2016 01:49

I went full removal ONCE, and only ONCE. The very front hurts like a son of a bitch and gets crazy ingrown hairs.

Instead I continued to have the "underneath" removed up to just above the top (don't like where all that hair merges) and also the sides to form a smaller triangle/landing strip.

Of course you should trim the hair down as longer hair is more painful to pull out (at least in my experience).

ALSO my advice is to check with the salon as to whether they want you to wear a g-string, provide a paper g-string, or no underwear at all. I mention this as for the longest time I went to this one particular (Russian) woman who said no underwear and she was my "first" waxing experience I thought that was normal. The last place I went to was in my home town and prior to moving overseas. I didn't know she preferred g-strings and she made me feel like a disgusting swamp rat. I was absolutely mortified and so happy to finally get out of there. I haven't had it done since (not that my DH minds, I trim instead).

steff13 · 06/03/2016 01:57

How does she wax you with a g-string on? I've been to a couple different salons, and they tell you to undress from the waist down.

AlpacaLypse · 06/03/2016 02:08

Just a tiny thought... go in normal? Weirdly enough quite a lot of men actually expect this and like it. And if they don't that's their problem not yours.

I do appreciate what you said in your OP, OP, but is being itchy for the privilege of spending xxxx£ on having your fanjo brilliantined really the way ahead?

Gardencentregroupie · 06/03/2016 02:20

Back in the early 00s, nobody had Brazilian or Hollywood waxes. Sex And The City had an episode where they all decreed it weird and painful. Why do that to yourself? Just have a normal bikini wax if you want the hairs contained by tiny pants.

kali110 · 06/03/2016 02:30

Veet is fine down there! I used to use it all the time when i could be arsed.
I would never do the whole again though hate it when it was all coming through agAin.
I tend to just wax all the sides and top, or epilate.

Katarzyna79 omg nooo! Armoits are the worse!! I can't wax them, nor epilate! I can just about epilate my arms but not the pits!!

steff13 · 06/03/2016 02:39

Weirdly enough quite a lot of men actually expect this and like it.

This is true, too. I read recently that only about half of women do anything down there, which means quite a few don't. I'm sure you wouldn't be the first one he's seen au naturale.

Why do that to yourself?

I like it. It's soft and smooth and makes me feel beautiful. My husband doesn't prefer it or expect it, I do it for me.

Bogeyface · 06/03/2016 02:40

Just leave it as it is!

Any man who is put off by a womans hairy genitals needs a basic lesson in biology. And think of it this way, do you think that the man in question is wondering whether to get a back, sack and crack? No, so why the hell should you?!

Bogeyface · 06/03/2016 02:41

That is, why should you consider deforestation, not getting your scrotum waxed :o

AnotherTimeMaybe · 06/03/2016 02:48

Ibuprofen half hour before wax! Wink

SoThatHappened · 06/03/2016 03:24

Even the gents say don't use veet down there lol.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/03/2016 03:28

I have been single for at least 5 years, I'm not considering dating, I'm happily single.
Removing my public hair feels better to me, and not in a sexual way, or even to do with periods, don't have those either,.
Couldn't tell you the last time I got rid of my leg hair though, and that suits me too, my body, my hair, my choice.

NisekoWhistler · 06/03/2016 04:06

Do not use veet!!
I really recommend Brazilian waxes but you must go to a place and be sure to have a therapist that has been recommended to you. I've had some great quick and relatively pain free waxes and some long and painful ones. You must must must trim before you go if you've got an afro going on down there. If not they'll end up doing that before you start and that's just embarrassing. Or if the therapist is too nice to trim for you she might just dive in and it'll be more painful.
Each time you got for a wax if gets less painful I think and for definite it helps thin the hair out.

If you really can't bear the idea and have the right skin tone and hair colour for it consider a Philips Lumea. Yes it's £300 but that's 10-15 Brazilians depending where you live.

Good luck! It won't be pain free but you'll feel much better when you've bitten the bullet

CatsCantFlyFast · 06/03/2016 04:12

You need to find a salon that does hot/warm wax. It makes a HUGE difference to the pain. My favourite is lycon hot wax - it's advertised as virtually pain free. A lot of the pain comes from the wax sticking to the skin and this wax doesn't do that.

First time will be more painful but not as bad as you're expecting

GinSolvesEverything · 06/03/2016 04:16

I get Brazilians every 5 weeks, have done for years. Personally I don't think it hurts nearly as much as people say. Maybe I have a high pain threshold - dunno.

If it's your first time, then definitely trim back to a cm long before you go. Any longer and it will hurt more, and the hairs are more likely to break off rather than be pulled out properly. This is what leads to the ingrown hairs and itchiness.

Also find a good therapist - I've been through 3-4 before finding my one now, and I'll be gutted if she moves on. Yes, you have to get all your bits out, but no they don't care. They've seen it all before. It's all very matter of fact, and just talk about something very mundane whilst it's going on.

Oh, it hurts more if you tense up, so relax as much as possible. I also like to hold my tummy with my hands to get that skin as taut as possible.

Go for it!

GinSolvesEverything · 06/03/2016 04:17

Oh yes - hot wax only!!! If they try to use strip wax (wax on skin that they then use fabric strips to remove), run a mile.

xenapants · 06/03/2016 05:29

Christ, adults are supposed to have pubic hair. This is ridiculous!

YakTriangle · 06/03/2016 06:06

This is rather sad. Only do it if you want to, not because you think it's expected of you. Like other people have said, you could just have a normal bikini wax or not do it at all, you don't have to take the whole lot off.

ohanami · 06/03/2016 06:08

Adults are supposed to have/be/do many things. Facial hair, leg hair, armpit hair, head hair... we interfere with all of them, for a variety of different and personal reasons, but as long as we're making our choices for ourselves then we're enjoying having a choice to make which is one of the privileges of being adults.

Op - I'd reiterate the advice on hot wax as mentioned already. And check what your salon means by Brazilian /Hollywood - turns out they're quite different definitions at different places. My salon has options in between as well, I've never been able to work out all the differences.
