To return puppy to breeder?

I'm really at the end of my tether with this.

I've had dogs all my life, mainly labs and collies who've house trained very quickly but also rescue dogs who've not been properly house trained as pups.

We now have an 8 month old boxer bitch.

She will not house train. The problem is she won't give any signals to be let outside. Everything has been done by the book, done again and redone again.

Lots of praise, treats, tethering to us, crate training, let out every 30 mins etc.

She continues to poo and we in her crate, or if she's not in the crate in the house.

I've contacted the breeder who says her mother was the same Angry

One of the other owners from her litter says she's having a lot of problems with her bitch too.

The vet says she has no health problems.

We have DC and caught out 18 month old walking around with dog poo in her hand the other week...

Just don't know what to do.

I think it's a miss worded reply for iminshock who said you should re home op.

Some people still think animals are disposable unfortunately Angry

MissBeaHaving · 05/03/2016 12:57

Auto correct seems to be getting worse!

GahBuggerit · 05/03/2016 12:59

op it was in response to Imin's post, where they said you were softer than them for not just getting rid of your doggie, as if that was a horrendous thing to be, ie. not a twat Smile

MissBeaHaving · 05/03/2016 13:10

If it's wee do you see her?

With one of mine i used to do a quick "ah ah outside"and take him out.
If you are going back to tethering use verbal commands at the same time.

MissBeaHaving · 05/03/2016 13:12

I've also always mostly had labs but have ended up with a rescue bull breed,he took a lot longer to train in this area but easily picked up other commands.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 05/03/2016 13:14

i'd look at her food too...we thought we might be able to cut down the food bill a bit if the boys would eat something cheaper...cannot remember wheat it was, but stil a decent enough food...the youngest just lost it with his toileting completely

we had got to about one third new food, in one meal and we had at least one puddle, and one poo every morning ...it was terrible!

back to the old stuff and vowed never to change!

Booboostwo · 05/03/2016 13:29

Tether her for a minimum of two weeks. It will be really tough, but I have never seen this fail so I have very hope that it will work for your dog too and you can have her a long and happy time together. Of course keep praising and treating for going outside as well.

VilootShesCute · 05/03/2016 14:19

Sorry late reply just got home. Well my husband slept in living room (his choice!) next to his pen for the first few weeks and every whimper was get him outside with no taking until he'd done his business then praise and back in pen. We still have to watch the cav he pees on my dad's jacket if he leaves it on the back of the chair in kitchen! Git. That's rare these days though. It can take over your life, watching for bloomin poos. Collies are a lot cleverer than boxers and easier to train in my experience. But I do feel for you

TrueBlu · 05/03/2016 14:43

Tondelaya - what food is/was it?

Booboo - She is tethered as we speak!

Viloot- yes, she seems a bit er, less bright but she's very very keen to please which makes other aspects easier!

Aww she's beautiful. Glad you're feeling more positive. Hope she works it all out really soon.

shinynewusername · 05/03/2016 15:14

Beautiful girl! Hope you find a cure.

gailhodson · 05/03/2016 15:14

Awwww....she's worth it, stick with her.

MissBeaHaving · 05/03/2016 15:37

Aww She is gorgeous!!
With foods what suits one dog won't necessarily suit all but a grain free food without additives is generally thought to be the way to go.

Mine are both on Millies wolfheart turkey & veg, their poos are quite small & solid, they usually only go twice a day.
I weigh it up to be sure they are getting the exact amount they need.

This is a great site for dog food info:

MissBeaHaving · 05/03/2016 15:39

Mine also have Raw food when it's convenient with the Millie's for other meals.

weaselwords · 05/03/2016 15:49

She's gorgeous!

I've always rehomed adult dogs, so no experience of toilet training. Just wanted to add that my sister has had 3 boxers and one bitch was highly strung, very dominant and took a year to house train! Poor sister was at the end of her tether and had a behaviourist in to help her. She'd only just cracked it when the poor dog died under anaesthetic being spayed (watch out for this as boxers react differently to a general than other dogs). Thinking about it, my Weimaraner bitch took about that long to house train too, as had a rough start and didn't know what she was supposed to be doing.

You will get there eventually.

Booboostwo · 05/03/2016 15:50

She's very sweet and looks very bright. The brightest dog I ever owned took ages to toilet train! You'll get there I am sure!

TheoriginalLEM · 05/03/2016 15:55

oh, isn't she gorgeous Smile

What are you cleaning up after her with? REmember that dogs have a really strong sense of smell so even if you think you have cleaned away all traces she will probably be returning to the same spots.

Clean with BIOLOGICAL washing powder and then when dry, dab with methylated spirits - this will break down any proteins and lipids that remain and stop her returning to scent. Make sure that whatever you clean with is non-ammonia based.

I don't envy you the mess, but she is lovely and i really hope you are able to crack it.

Good luck op

CatThiefKeith · 05/03/2016 16:03

I think she will get it. The fact that she sits, lays down and has brilliant recall suggests she is much brighter than most boxers. Grin

Our last (male) boxer took almost a year to housetrain, and never really got the hang of not jumping up or recall. He was very lovely all the same.

Good luck op

Heatherplant · 05/03/2016 17:34

I've a boxer. It did take her ages to house train but she eventually got it and is now fantastic. There is light at the end of the tunnel I promise, problem is boxers are bloody stubborn and it does take some time to 'break' them. We used the crate indoors and gradually let her roam. Now she has full run of the house and no accidents in years (by that I mean toilet accidents she did eat my £300 glasses but I still love her).

Lacystacie · 06/03/2016 13:11

I've always had rescue dogs , my latest a boy pup who I got at 6 weeks old was left to fag butts also inbred ! He had constant problems with toilet training it took until he almost 1 to get over the problem ( only took so long because he had a hernia which hurt when he would strain to poo ). I have always trained all my dogs with the command 'go toilet' it makes it so much easier the dog understands what you want and you not walking around waiting 20 mins for him to pee. I used to do it by taking him into the garden and telling him to go toilet then when he did I'd make a massive fuss it gave instant results, he is always eager to please he just didn't understand. He's 3 now and no incidents for a very long time . try using a command boxers are very intelligent and very stubborn, persistence is the key

RandomMess · 06/03/2016 13:22

She is adorable looking!!!

I feel hopeful for you know as it seems to be a breed issue that its just going to take a looooooooooooooong time...

Good luck.
