I'm all for bargains and I buy from them all but dear god.

Lidl beef Wellington - disgusting. Utterly utterly disgusting.the 'jus' was a salty slime with more than a hint of thyme.

Vile vile vile

I like most lidl stuff, but agree that all their ready meal type things are generally nasty. They do smoked haddock fishcakes that are ok. The gratin, salad dressings, coleslaw etc are vile.

tingon · 05/03/2016 00:19

I bought the secateurs yesterday day for DD, but I'm keeping them, they have a little button that lets you open them wider which is great. Also bought the folding pruning saw.

The almond praline mini eggs are in, but I'm on a diet. Sad

IcingandSlicing · 05/03/2016 00:22

The bakery is great - freshly baked croissants and speciality breads at half the price of M&S and Waitrose.

kali110 · 05/03/2016 01:10

Haven't tried the wellington, but i've never had a bad anything from either of the places. I think both of their products are fantastic. Love all their different kinds of meat, and their cold coffee( that is actually a reasonable price!)
My god, i love lidl jam donuts too

Wordsaremything · 07/03/2016 21:34

I take it back. Went wild on my last shop ( with the beef Wellington and all ) and also got the beef carpaccio (2.99) SUPERB.

Their Deluxe 3 fish roast is lovely as is their frozen paella. They also do a Greek rice dish during Greek week which is lovely and I wish they did all the time.

Sadly I don't have a lidl on my side of the city so have to make a special trip. They are building one but it won't open until next year.

Agree with a PP that both Aldi and lidl do well in blind taste tests, where people don't have brand snobbery to guide them.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/03/2016 22:29

I often think there's something wrong with me as all the pizzas and cheese and chocolate and all the things everyone raves about in either aldi or lidl are revolting.

I have a bag of white chocolate coins from Xmas. rank.

salmon eh croute, frozen salmon . vile

hummus- in a previous life maybe

fruit and veg barely last the journey home and even the butter is off when you buy it.

the only redeeming feature in lidl is the bakery. other than that it's as Russel Howard describes.

a shelter fir abused food Grin

RaisingSteam · 07/03/2016 22:34

I had some really ropey inedible fruit from Aldi the other week. I was surprised as generally it's fine. But then I had a soggy melon and leathery grapes from Sainsburys too - you can have that anywhere. I don't get ready meals apart from those new oval SS pizzas , fish fingers is one thing but if it's a special occasion surely you'd make it fresh?

Crazypetlady · 07/03/2016 22:44

I shop in aldi when I can get there occasionally life I have only ever had a problem with their frozen pizza

minifingerz · 07/03/2016 23:00

YABU

The meat pies (Deluxe ones) are fine. Actually nice.

SuperLoveFuzz · 07/03/2016 23:12

I had the beef Wellington with the cheesey dauphinois last night. Loved them both. easily pleased

ShrimpieFlintshire · 07/03/2016 23:28

I once bought Lidl's own teabags, but I should have swept the dust of the floor and steeped it in dishwater instead. Their custard is also grotesque.

Apart from that, most of their stuff is ok, plus I like perusing the random shite in the middle aisle and coming home with stuff I never knew I wanted.

ShrimpieFlintshire · 07/03/2016 23:28
  • off, not of the floor.
Gileswithachainsaw · 08/03/2016 06:57

am I the only one who's been caught out and ripped off with the oddity aisle too?

between the two of them either I or a family member has had- hand whisk that burnt out after a bit the 3rd use

gloves where one use and the lining detached/ruffled so badly they couldn't be worn again.

bread maker which didn't work

laundry basket which fell apart

the world's worst potato peeler

doorbell which works about 50 percent of the time.

even the colouring pencils were rubbish

I managed to get some pyjamas amd socks but that's about the only things that have been any good

Gileswithachainsaw · 08/03/2016 07:01

the mandolin/veg slicer was rubbish too.

SquinkiesRule · 08/03/2016 08:21

We shop Aldi with great success, but occasionally drop into Lidl, fresh bread and the Potato salad with creme fraiche are lush.

annamae · 08/03/2016 12:19

you get what you pay for!

ephemeralfairy · 08/03/2016 12:31

Ready meals are disgusting wherever they are from.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 08/03/2016 14:54

I get the curry and rice meals for when it's just me. Also the pizzas with the circle of mozzarella on are lush. That's it in the ready meals bit.

Has anyone mentioned the swirly chocolate spread, slice burger gherkins, potato salad in creme fresh, lemon and lime yogurt and the champion bread that is packed with seeds? We get those often.

Lidl's fruit here is fine. Their crates of mandarins (or satsumas or whatever version of baby oranges they are) have been delish and we do a crate a week.

shamonts · 08/03/2016 14:57

M and S is the only decent ready meal place. Waitrose is CRAP as is lidl.

6cats3gingerkittens · 08/03/2016 15:12

Only ever been into a Lidl and an Aldi store once. Both awful with rude staff and ready to rot vegetables. Never again. I'm a Tesco/Sainsburys fan. Both of my local stores are excellent and any problems are sorted out instantly. Yes, Northampton, I am talking about youSmile.

YoJesse · 08/03/2016 16:13

Yabu lidls amazing. Best fruit and veg. Their mini pizza is my new favourite.
