Shoes off house rule

BettyBi0 · 02/03/2016 16:11

So we have a shoes off rule in our house. Mainly because of the grubby London streets and dog poo everywhere locally plus a floor licking toddler.

Every time my parents visit I have to ask them to take their shoes off. EVERY Fing TIME! They act like its such a massive imposition.

AIBU or would you just shut up and put up?

cornishglos · 02/03/2016 22:21

The midwife walked mud all over my new carpet.

I always take my shoes off as soon as I enter someone's house and to be honest all my friends and family do in mine except SIL who walks all over my clean carpets and her 4 year old with muddy boots Angry

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/03/2016 22:43

I hope you wouldn't in my house Hot I would be squirming.

EarSlaps · 02/03/2016 22:52

I grew up in a shoes off house and was taught to take mine off when I went to anyone else's house too. Hence I always take my shoes off when I go round unless I'm only stopping for a minute or two, when I'll check.

My children will also take their shoes off as soon as they enter a house and abandon them on the doormat.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 02/03/2016 22:57

Rude and inhospitable to insist guests take off shoes (though naturally they would if they'd waded through mud to get there) and BOAK at the idea of guest slippers. I ask people to keep their shoes on in my house, I don't want to look at your minging feet.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 02/03/2016 22:59

Incidentally we lived in a London house that opened straight onto the street when my DC were small... they are NEVER ill Grin

PiperChapstick · 02/03/2016 23:03

I'd feel sick at having to wear manky old slippers that have been on other people's feet. Seriously, people talk like its a guarantee that every guest will trail in dog muck. Shoes are shoes - and you don't eat off your carpets!

I mean if I did have muddy shoes then yes I'd take them off in other people's homes but if they had just been on my carpet/car/pavements and were not dirty they're staying on my feet unless I'm told otherwise

BettyBi0 · 02/03/2016 23:08

Wow! I'm amazed how emotive this subject is haha.

So, for the YABUs that suggested the toddler would benefit from the extra germs.... Really? Random strangers phlegm and dog poo? Err no thanks.

And for those that mentioned fungal infections and verucas etc. Why don't you just wear some bloomin socks? I find other people's naked feet a bit ewwww at the best of times. I don't think that many people are bare foot inside their shoes though. That's just a bit grim no?

Is it just a British thing this shoes on all the time business? Are people scared of appearing a bit relaxed or something? I've lived in Scandinavia where it's absolutely normal to just always remove your outside shoes. My in-laws are all Chinese so for them shoes in the house is a total no no.

If we have a big house party then I don't bother asking - but then kick myself when some eeeeejit thinks it's ok to wear Fing stilettos on my lovely solid wood floors.

Do people really just come home from work and sit around in their own houses with their shoes on until bedtime? No wonder they get fungal infections Hahahaha

What Maryz said. I have been in that position...going to dinner party, wearing a dress and heels and feeling an absolute dick when asked to remove heels and standing there in dress (which suddenly looks like a sack of shit) and tights.

That reminds me of that episode of SATC where Carroe has to remove her expensive shoes at the door and says to her host "but this is an outfit Grin

NuggetofPurestGreen · 02/03/2016 23:12

Betty . I don't think that many people are bare foot inside their shoes though. That's just a bit grim no?

What about when you're wearing ballet flats or sandals or work heels with a skirt ? I certainly don't wear socks then!!

Sparklingbrook · 02/03/2016 23:14

You really didn't know what happens on a shoes on/off thread on MN? They always go like this. Grin

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 02/03/2016 23:15

No, I swap my shoes for slippers when I get home because it's my home. I often change into my pyjamas too but I don't make guests do it.

expatinscotland · 02/03/2016 23:18

'I have indoor crocs people can wear if they can't be barefoot (not that its ever come up), I wear them when I'm doing the mopping so I don't get wet socks.'

You really offer up your fucking crocs for guests to wear? You expect them to wear your shoes?!

ComeonSummer1 · 02/03/2016 23:18

But i would hate to muck up your floors. That would be so rude. It would spoil my enjoyment of your company.

Still each to their own.Smile

ComeonSummer1 · 02/03/2016 23:23

Betty British here and none of my friends or family keep shoes on
Indoors. It's manky and rude.

Obviously it's a decisive topic though. Grin

ComeonSummer1 · 02/03/2016 23:26

piper

Think s dinner party is different as surely guests either get s taxi door to door or if walking wear proper shoes for the walk and bring stilettos to change into at the venue.

Most people don't walk through mud In posh shoes do they?

ComeonSummer1 · 02/03/2016 23:27

Devisive obviously Smile

NuggetofPurestGreen · 02/03/2016 23:28

Yeah but then you have the 'heels damaging the floors' issue Comeon. It's a minefield!!!

ComeonSummer1 · 02/03/2016 23:29

Ffs on my phone and there are pop ups of cleaning company adverts for carpets.

Are you setting the agenda mumsnet and the adverts to suit? Confused

ComeonSummer1 · 02/03/2016 23:32

nuggeto

Could you sue your guests? That could be fun. Smile

And they have to get hosed down and disinfected before they change like they do in the prison movies Grin

tma1968 · 03/03/2016 00:18

I have a mat at the front door for wiping your feet on so poo or spit are sorted. I would remove my shoes in someone's house if I'd walked up a muddy road but if I'd just stepped out of my clean car I probably wouldn't. Each to their own I suppose.
