Aibu to find this a bit odd, my dsis is due to have her baby any day and has told me they are planning to call it almost the same name as my dd, who is 1yo.

I don't want to say the names for fear of outing, but it's like my dd being called Maisie and her dd being Macey. It's hard to tell the names apart when spoken. I am quite bemused by the whole situation, until now they had several names on their shortlist, but apparently this final choice is for definite...odd?

Yanbu. That's really odd.

I find it odd to name your child with an actual nickname like Harry or Lizzie or Tony or Matt.

This causes problems. I once called someone Matthew and he was very cross because his actual name is Matt. It says Matt on his passport. Who knew.

I don't see what the big deal is. We had both Ava and Eva (they are two different names) on our list. We named our dc a similar name to their cousin. We never gave the coincidence any thought until I realised it was "a problem" on mn and no one ever mixes them up.
Op, they may change their names, they may not. Either way, it's up to them what they name their child so I think yabu. I know two sisters called Hilda and Hillary (I thought it odd but it's none of my business so in the dreaded words of Frozen "Let it go, Let it go...."

We started trying for a family nearly 10 years ago and had picked out the only name we could agree on name we thought we would like for a boy, DP's brother then got a girlfriend, got her pregnant and used a very similar name to what we had picked out (they didn't know, of course) which led to much discussion between DP and I about whether we could/would still use that name.
Initially he said yes " and what about the confusion for your parents?" I wondered, but he didn't see a problem. Then when I finally got (and stayed) pregnant, he decided it was too confusing and didn't want to use that name. Fortunately we had a girl, and now (unfortunately) there's very very little chance of being able to have another so all null and void.

I did wonder what it would have been like for DP's family and rellies given that half of them still can't spell/remember/know my very common and monosyllabic name right after 15 years

Maybe she really wanted the name. Why should she change just because your daughter is called something similar?

AKissACuddleAndACheekyFinger · 04/03/2016 00:18

Bit off topic but my step daughter and I have the same name which is very satisfying as her mother is a money grabbing narcissistic evil troll isn't my biggest fan so she must think of little old me every time she says it Grin However, our families never seem to find it in the slightest bit problematic. These name coincidences can happen in families entirely by accident like ours did. Don't worry about it xx

MistressDeeCee · 04/03/2016 01:01

I wouldnt like that. Probably irrational of me but, I just wouldn't. Doesn't she have an imagination?

GreatFuckability · 04/03/2016 01:36

I know sisters called Catherine and Katie. That's just bizarre.
It would bother me, OP. My cousin called her son the same name as mine, and I'm still irritated by it 7 years down the line. Grin

My mum has 2 brothers of same name; well one is a half brother she only met 40 or so years after her father disappeared. Turns out he went on to have another family, and called both boys in the 2 families the same name! Now that's weird!

WomanScorned · 04/03/2016 04:06

The baby names board is full of people who feel they can't use a certain name, even though they like it, just because someone in 'their circle' has already used it.
It's not about practicality or confusion.
If it's a family name, it wouldn't bother me (dnephew's first name is the same as my ds's middle name - both named after our dad), but unless op's dsis is naming her child after the cousin from fondness, or family tradition, I'd find it odd and a bit annoying.
