I booked tickets to the other side of the world at Christmas. Also bought tickets for a short flight out there, a trip etc.

One lost job and - I just don't think it can be done, financially.

AIBU to be gutted we've lost so much money Sad

Yes you're probably right I'm not really mature enough

OP posts:
notgoingabroad · 02/03/2016 10:20

Hopefully I'd die.

OP posts:
RudeElf · 02/03/2016 10:21

there wasn't anything about travel insurance when I booked the flights

But you knew you were going on holiday right? Surely you know to book insurance? Right? right?

AliceInUnderpants · 02/03/2016 10:22

So when you need medical care, who pays? When you get mugged, who pays? When your travel arrangements go wrong and you need to arrange alternatives and pay upfront, who pays?

You're right, it wouldn't be sensible for you to go away, but not because of losing your job.

RudeElf · 02/03/2016 10:23

Oh fuck off with that shite! How fucking insensitive to the families if all the people who actuay have died abroad and have had to scrape together thousands to have their loved ones brought home! And you dying doesnt mean there are no bills you fucking idiot! Someone else has to pay them. Selfish git.

notgoingabroad · 02/03/2016 10:25

Please stop it.

Chippednailvarnish · 02/03/2016 10:31

Oh well that's one less thing Australia has got to worry about.

Hmm
Wevegotahomelesslove · 02/03/2016 10:33

New poster? Hmm

notgoingabroad · 02/03/2016 10:38

I'll show you the tickets if you want. I'm not a troll. Just very very stupid and haven't been abroad before. And did I mention stupid?

OP posts:
Wevegotahomelesslove · 02/03/2016 10:39

Anyway to answer your question, yes going away would be a terrible move and maybe you should really think about it before you ever book a holiday abroad again considering this has happened to you twice, call and try and get some of your money back then maybe go on a weekend away without flights and shit.

There there op.
Oh dear that's a shame. Never mind, better luck next time.
That more what you were expecting?

notgoingabroad · 02/03/2016 10:50

I'm not whining.

I am really sorry for posting for wasting your time, i didn't mean to annoy anybody I was just thinking really. I'm not vague or disinterested either how I feel and how I sound is obviously very different. I'm having a cry in the toilet now. It's not for there there's its just so you don't think I don't care. I didn't know, and i won't be going and it doesn't matter to me and I don't know why it matters to some of you.

Twitterqueen · 02/03/2016 10:55

Op hopefully you've learned a few financial lessons here Flowers. And maybe some other ones too...

Don't book holidays you can't afford
Always consider insurance - especially health & damage etc, if not cancellation
If you have bad credit and no card, how do you expect to pay for things whilst you're over there?
PLAN! Failure to plan = plan to fail
When things go wrong, the only person who can put them right is you.

BarbarianMum · 02/03/2016 10:56

I always take out travel insurance to cover healthcare and emergency but no policy I've ever had would cover me from having lost my job and not having the necessary spends. Which policies offer this?

FaceTheFace · 02/03/2016 10:57

Not sure how you've managed to add 'got into Mumsnet flamewar' to your list of troubles today, but ...

phone the airline! find out what your options are. don't just give up.

Storminateapot · 02/03/2016 10:57

How old are you OP? Do you generally live independently, managing your own affairs etc? You do sound inexperienced and there is a lot of 'I don't think I can rebook/cancel/get other holiday etc without having actually taken the initiative to find out for sure. Surely you're still entitled to paid leave in your new job? Have you fully understood the terms & conditions of your new employment?

Maybe you got carried away with a pipe dream with this trip.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound patronising, but you come across a bit naive so it's hard to judge what's going on here.

RB68 · 02/03/2016 11:01

It is also possible you could move the flight rather than lose it - so push it out so that you have time to recover from the Job loss and change of hours etc

But yes get in touch with the holiday co or flight co and work out what the options are instead of panicking

Oh and generally an annual travel policy is good value when you are looking

notgoingabroad · 02/03/2016 11:01

Yeah I do love independently it's just I booked the flights on s bit of a whim. I could afford it then. It's been very hard lately and I guess I've been in denial a bit you know?

OP posts:
Wevegotahomelesslove · 02/03/2016 11:12

Even if you could changr the filights to a latet date, i dont think going halfway across the world on your own would be the best thing for you to do, you seems a bit vulnerable (i dont mean this in a nasty way) and maybe a bit down.

I dont think you deserved some of the comments on here but you do come across as a bit disorganized and clueless, its like you were just gonna muddle through this holiday without actually having anything planned which could be quite dangerous.

In future make sure you have a solid plan and are well organized.

notgoingabroad · 02/03/2016 11:14

Normally I'm not but stuff changes

Our Virgin policy covers redundancy. As I said upthread, not sure it would pay out if you got sacked...

BarbarianMum · 02/03/2016 11:34

But OP is in a new job now. Would your policy really pay out for a gap in employment? Would you get full flight refund etc? If so, that's really impressive, my policies have huge great lists of exclusions and exemptions
