I booked tickets to the other side of the world at Christmas. Also bought tickets for a short flight out there, a trip etc.

One lost job and - I just don't think it can be done, financially.

AIBU to be gutted we've lost so much money Sad

I suspect you can cancel as well (for a fee).

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 19:33

Pretty much just day to day spends yes

OP posts:
MaidOfStars · 01/03/2016 19:36

Ok, OP, how much money do you think you need to make this work? To cover costs at home and spending/hotel for five days in Aus?

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 19:43

Probably about £1000

OP posts:
BlueMoonRising · 01/03/2016 20:18

You could change to later in the year.

You could also cancel and although you might not get flight costs back, you should get taxes refunded.

Op, I get the impression that you are not doing anything to find out for yourself. You need to be a bit more proactive here, things won't happen unless you make it happen. You won't get the information you need by coming on here.

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 20:19

Yes, I agree Blue but it's really only recently I've 'faced up' to the very probable fact I won't be going. I don't think changing to later in the year is possible.

OP posts:
hugoandme · 01/03/2016 20:20

Sell tickets on gumtree?

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 20:21

Don't they have my name on them, though?

OP posts:
BlueMoonRising · 01/03/2016 20:25

Op, ASK OPODO WHAT YOU CAN DO.

Sorry for shouting but why ask on here??

Why is later in the year not an option? To fit in with holidays you can take? When you'll have more money saved?

You seem a little defeatist.

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 20:26

Oh Blue ... Because I was thinking about it today and adding up and trying to make it work, and I just don't think I can.

Obviously, it's a bit gutting. I mean, I was looking forward to it and it's a huge amount of money to literally chuck away but I have to be pragmatic as well.

The only other time I could go away is the summer and then I would have same problem with no income. Plus the cost of flights would probably go rocketing up.

DinosaursRoar · 01/03/2016 20:38

OP - so you are now working in a school and if you can go away in the school easter holidays, you won't have to take unpaid leave, is that right?

Look, call the airline, find out if it's possible to change your flight days, it might not be or might cost you a bit of money to do it, but you're probably going to have more luck with the airline than the online company you used to book them. If you don't ask, you won't find out.

If you don't have to take unpaid leave and your hotels are paid for (again, you might be able to move that) then would you be able to afford to go using the spending money you would have used to just live in the UK?

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 20:40

Not quite dinosaurs, it's unpaid leave whatever but 2 weeks not 4.

This schools Easter holidays are closer though. So I don't think I'd be able to save enough in the time. Plus I have a second job I'd need to take unpaid leave from.

OP posts:
L3gomad · 01/03/2016 20:44

You can change flights, but there will be a cost (have done this)

You could also ask if you cancel and if you would receive any money back

If you paid using credit card you will have better protection

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 20:45

No credit card, thanks though.

OP posts:
RudeElf · 01/03/2016 21:01

Why will you have no income in the summer? Does your salary not get spread over 12 months? Couldnt you save up over the next 4/5 months?

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 21:05

I can try but it's difficult

OP posts:
Loqo · 01/03/2016 21:13

You will get the tax back from your flights.

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 21:14

That's something then, although I didn't when this happened before Sad

OP posts:
MaidOfStars · 02/03/2016 08:46

This has happened before? You lost money that you'd paid for flights/holiday you were unable to take?

And you STILL didn't get travel insurance???

You are a very frustrating OP. I'm half thinking this thread is a windup. You show zero signs of any initiative or problem solving ability. You're kind of dripping your way through the thread, ignoring the difficult questions and answering the others with a vague, disinterested tone.

You need £1k to make this work? This is far less than I anticipated - I was expecting £5k+. Are you sure this is enough? Borrow from parents/mates/travelling companion (still not sure why you used 'we' in the opening post)? Bank overdraft? Payday loan for some of it? Can you sell some jewellery/electronics/nice clothes? Eat beans on toast until you go away.

What is this 'second job' you've just dripfed? Can you take that time off?

notgoingabroad · 02/03/2016 10:08

No, it's not a windup.

It has happened before, the first time I did buy travel insurance but I guess it didn't pay out. Anyway I'm not going so don't worry about it :)

OP posts:
AliceInUnderpants · 02/03/2016 10:13

Yet another idiot who fucks off to another country without travel insurance, expecting others to pick up the slack.

RudeElf · 02/03/2016 10:14

Why are you not going? Are you just giving up and going to sulk about it?

You guess it didnt pay out? Hmm do you know why? Did you ask?

I think maybe you arent mature enough to be arranging expensive holidays. Get your mum or another adult to do it for you in future and make sure you take them with you. To pack your case for you and whatnot.

I dont actually buy that you had any realistic notion of being alone in australia.

notgoingabroad · 02/03/2016 10:19

I'm not fucking off and I'm not sulking - not sure why you think I was. Alice I've not been abroad before really and there wasn't anything about travel insurance when I booked the flights, obviously I wouldn't expect others to pick up the slack.

Yup, it sounds like you wanted a pity party rather than any advice. Oh well your loss.

RudeElf · 02/03/2016 10:20

Well who do you think would pay your healthcare bills if you had an accident whilst on holiday?
