I booked tickets to the other side of the world at Christmas. Also bought tickets for a short flight out there, a trip etc.

One lost job and - I just don't think it can be done, financially.

AIBU to be gutted we've lost so much money Sad

Flights and one hotel. I'm not sure what you mean by 'how were you going to pay for that'

OP posts:
MaidOfStars · 01/03/2016 18:11

I was seeing if you had money aside to pay for accommodation, if you hadn't already paid out for it. Nothing sinister.

So you have flights and one hotel paid? How much further accommodation do you need? Three weeks worth? Three days worth?

AnotherEffingOrangeRevel · 01/03/2016 18:15

Can flights be sold on to someone else? (No idea if this is possible, but if they're that expensive then the transfer fee might be relatively insignificant).

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 18:15

5 days.

OP posts:
notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 18:16

I don't think they can Sad I would sell them if I thought I could.

MaidOfStars · 01/03/2016 18:18

And a previous question: is there ANY budget over and above the four weeks unpaid, or is this period of no income enough to sink you on its own?

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 18:19

I don't understand your question sorry

OP posts:
MaidOfStars · 01/03/2016 18:20

OP, I suspect you might be going somewhere reasonably cheap? To get flights/majority accommodation for £1k?

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 18:21

Australia and I don't think I am going :)

OP posts:
MaidOfStars · 01/03/2016 18:21

If you weren't going anywhere or doing anything, could you afford to take four weeks unpaid leave? Or is that income vital in order for you to pay key bills?

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 18:23

It's pretty vital really. Plus I think being on the other side of the world, alone, with no money would be a bit petrifying!

OP posts:
Plateofcrumbs · 01/03/2016 18:24

What maidofstars is getting at OP is whether the main financial issue is the amount of money you will lose due to unplanned unpaid leave, or the cost of the holiday over and above the £1k you've already spent.

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 18:24

Both, TBH. I'll lose 2 weeks ages whatever I do and so that's a consideration, add to that 4 weeks and a holiday, not good.

(x-posted with maidofstars)

Solina · 01/03/2016 18:27

Did you save any money for spending when planning this trip?

Also did you not mention this holiday to the employer when you interviewed/started?

Could you maybe change the flights so you could go for a shorter time, week or two?

Plateofcrumbs · 01/03/2016 18:28

I don't know if you've already had a gap between jobs, or the new job pays less - but if not, I'm assuming the main difference between what you had previously budgeted and the current situation is 2 weeks unpaid leave? Because the other holiday costs were already in your budget?

MaidOfStars · 01/03/2016 18:29

You use the pronoun "we" in your opening post. Are you travelling alone?

OK, so regardless of anything else, you simply can't afford to take four weeks off work unpaid and still live/keep a roof over your head/pay bills. And without any access to credit (which presumably also precludes a little bank loan), the trip is a no go. So, I will get flamed for this, but might a short term loan help you out - I fucking hate those companies and I don't think they should be used frivolously, but this might be a justifiable case, given that you have projected future earnings (steady?) and could genuinely work out what you can afford to repay.

But, if it's a no go. Who do you fly with? There are brokers that can sell flights, where the airlines allow it. Can you get a refund on your hotel?

RudeElf · 01/03/2016 18:30

Can you change the date of the flights so you are only staying in the hotel already paid for and wont need extra unpaid leave from work?

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 18:31

I mentioned it solina, unpaid leave not a problem but obviously they won't pay me for it!

United Arab Emirates is the flight company?

OP posts:
specialsubject · 01/03/2016 18:32

still not clear, OP - did you buy any travel insurance?

if you did, have you checked for any possible cover.
if you didn't - when were you planning to buy it?

BoomBoomsCousin · 01/03/2016 18:32

If you get another job soon, could you change the dates so that you have time to make up for the dip in income from losing job and time to build up holiday?

YANBU to be gutted. You must have been looking forward to it so much. But do try and see what you can do to alter tickets or pass them on to someone else etc. It may not be a complete loss.

Plateofcrumbs · 01/03/2016 18:34

to be honest OP it sounds like you just want to mope about it rather than engage in thinking about solutions. If that's the case Flowers and commiserations but people are trying to offer ideas and you don't seem that interested.

notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 18:34

I just don't think I can change them. I booked with Opodo and the customer service isn't great TBH.

It's horrible.

OP posts:
notgoingabroad · 01/03/2016 18:35

I don't know plate, I don't know what the best thing is to do and to be fair I don't understand some questions too well. I'm not sure why you don't think I'm interested though?
