in wanting my Fitbit to work accurately?

I bought a Fitbit. A charge HR. Back in January.
I loved it.

Then it started counting random flights of stairs.
One day it gave me a medal for counting over 100 flights of stairs. The same day it recorded 52 flights on my log. Confused

I get that the actual step counter might not be 100% accurate. If I wave my arm around it often records steps, but that is fair enough.
A flight of stairs is defined by an elevation of 10 feet. My arm is not that long. So waving it around does not come close to a flight of stairs.

I complained. They sent me a complimentary replacement.
It is doing the same bastarding thing. Only with added not counting active minutes.

AIBU to simply expect it to do its job? And work accurately??
I've complained again but won't get a response until tomorrow.

I've given up with mine - got it for Xmas. It counts steps while I'm asleep, I can't wear it while riding as it counts my horse's steps and the battery runs down really quickly. Crap bit of kit really.

MrsDeathOfRats · 01/03/2016 09:38

I have it between 1-2 fingers width from my hand, so where they recommend and if I had it any tighter it would be uncomfortable.

I'm just frustrated.
I can live with a little inaccuracy - no one and no gadget is going to be perfect but it counting and then Uncounting stairs is making me question what else it gets wrong.

I fairly easily do the 10000 steps. But last night I was brushing my teeth and it did its little dance cos I had reached 10k steps.... I was standing still. Using my other hand to brush my teeth.

It takes a few seconds to summon up the happy dance, so don't worry about that.

Wearing it on your non dominate hand is meant to be more accurate and slightly lower reading. Make sure the Fitbit software has correct hand selected too.

How is it for steps and heart rate, do they seem accurate ?

Katenka · 01/03/2016 14:23

It so weird. Because it must be coincidence that 2 haven't worked.

I have had 2 and both accurate. That's why I wondered if you were wearing it wrong.

If it's not working for you, it's not working for you.

tkndnv · 01/03/2016 15:13

I do not see the point of these contraptions.

Why on earth does it matter what you have walked to the actual step?

Just go for a run/walk a few times a day and you'll be fine.

MrsDeathOfRats · 01/03/2016 15:56

I don't get it either.

I clearly must be doing something wrong.
Today it has registered 12 flights of stairs.

I did drive to Tesco and back, which involves doing 9 floors up in a lift and some hills while driving. So maybe that has had an effect?
Still, this mornings behaviour is seriously strange with counting 2 then back to one.

Waiting for a response from Fitbit customer service now.
On step count it seems reasonably accurate can't say 100% obvs as I'm not counting them!!

I don't see the point of you going to the trouble of announcing that you do not see the point. But so glad you contributed.

CoperCabana · 01/03/2016 16:39

For someone like me with childcare responsibilities and an almost full time job, just going for a run or a walk a few times a day is simply not possible. The Fitbit has motivated me from c5k steps a day to more like 13k steps a day in less than 2 months. It has helped me think about how I can incorporate more activity into my daily life. Fine if some people can't see the point. I can, and my fitness and weight loss is proof of that.

lurkingfromhome · 01/03/2016 16:52

Mine stopped recording any sleep after a few weeks and went a bit haywire as steps it had previously registered mysteriously disappeared. I uninstalled it from the app and then reinstalled it and that seemed to do the trick although I never got back the data it had lost ...

Klaptrap · 01/03/2016 16:55

Ask if you can swap it for a Fitbit One instead. It's a simpler beast overall, but the only issue I've ever had with mine is that it counts steps when driving, but that can be solved by charging it while in the car.

ouryve · 01/03/2016 16:58

The random flights of stairs is down to air pressure. On windy days, when the air pressure drops dramatically, my charge adds loads of extra flights of stairs in, too.

And I don't even need it to for a fake boost because I've normally got my 10 flights by just gone 9am, as I live somewhere hilly!

SmallBearMumma · 01/03/2016 21:16

Sometimes mine counts flights of stairs when driving up and down hilly areas, and like others have said windy days make a difference. On the other side mine doesn't always count flights of stairs and I stand like a loon at the top waving my arm around Confused

If you press and hold the button on the side down at the start and end of your run it will record it as exercise and it should then count towards your active minutes

HungryHorace · 01/03/2016 21:58

Mine doesn't count the stairs at home, but does count the not-exactly-significant hills near to work as stairs. If I go to Asda at lunch time I gain about 20 flights when in reality I barely do stairs during my working day as my office is on the ground floor.

HeffalumpHistory · 01/03/2016 22:14

My charge hr won't sync since I got a new phone Hmm bloody thing is pissing me off.
Also regularly adds flights of stairs I've not done/convinced it misses steps I do take.
AND!!!! I'm allergic to the strap so wear it with a bandage when the irritation is bad

whats4teamum · 01/03/2016 22:22

I have a charge which is now behaving erratically. I will fully charge it and tHe next day it is flat. Now measuring same route to work with far less steps.

Why did I get a charge? To replace the Fitbit one which went down the same erratic path. Plus my DF had the little belt clip one which, surprise surprise, began showing the same faults.

Really want to love it but sick of the unreliability and seeming inbuilt obsolescence.

DustyCropHopper · 02/03/2016 00:28

I walk along the sea front and mine registers quite a few flights of stairs sometimes, some of it is because you have to go down to the promenade so you have to go back up again but not sure why else. It doesn't really bother me to be fair, I am mainly interested in my step count and seeing that I am burning up calories! Having read through the comments about wind, that fits as on very windy seafront days I do more steps than calm days!
To the person who said they don't see the point, I am doing weight watchers and have joined my Fitbit to my Ww app. This means it shows how many fit points I have used which is brilliant too and motivates me to get moving. It also helps that I am in challenges with friends, you never want to be at the bottom! So far I have lost 1st 4.5lbs in 8 weeks, partly down to the Fitbit!
