To think the 'Disrespect NoBody' ad campaign is horribly sexist?

Not sure if this has already been discussed but has anybody else seen the 'Disrespect NoBody' TV adverts that are supposedly raising awareness for healthy relationships and domestic violence?

Every single scenario in the advert is targeted at men abusing women whether it be physically or emotionally. Y'know because men are never victims?

Is it becuase: 1) they are American 2) they know most moderators go to bed.

Good point. I always think of them as staying up late into the night, working their fingers to the bone...

Jasonandyawegunorts · 01/03/2016 12:22

Like everything though, Goady fuckers are the minority.

limitedperiodonly · 01/03/2016 12:26

I do like the idea of an international network of MRAs working on some kind of Bat Signal flashed into the sky.

'Men! Drop whatever is in hand. Yes! Even that! Some women somewhere in the world are being uppity and we need your help!'

limitedperiodonly · 01/03/2016 12:28

Goady fuckers are in the minority but they can have a disproportionate effect when roused.

OhShutUpThomas · 01/03/2016 12:36

The thing is limited, you're probably not that far from the truth...!

limitedperiodonly · 01/03/2016 12:40

It was deleted because talk guidelines are that petitions need to go in the petitions topic.

I've never noticed that before SoupDragon. How do you know that was the reason? I didn't get the memo. But if so, it should have been moved, with an explanation of where people could find it, don't you think?

I'd like to read it. Maybe I'd even want to sign it.

Helmetbymidnight · 01/03/2016 12:57

You don't ever get a reason when comments are deleted.

I'd guess it was because of this "But we'll delete anyone's attempts to spam the boards with links, as a way of promoting their own product, services, survey or e-petition, as it annoys our members."

You could pm Alex a request for the link. Or maybe he'll ask for it to go into petitions. Or maybe he feels too horribly degraded again, I don't know.

SoupDragon · 01/03/2016 13:08

Did you mean this to sound so arsey?

Anyway ts quite clearly stated in the talk guidelines which are freely available for all to read - ther is a link in the deleted post message. I read the deleted post, it was waffling on about the petition and nothing else.

limitedperiodonly · 01/03/2016 13:09

You don't ever get a reason when comments are deleted.

I didn't think so either but I wondered whether SoupDragon had some insider knowledge. I've seen plenty of petitions allowed in Chat or AIBU. I've even signed one or two.

I suspect I wouldn't want to sign this one. But I'd like to read Alex's views. It's been a dull morning so far and I could do with a laugh.

limitedperiodonly · 01/03/2016 13:09

Did you mean this to sound so arsey?

Mmm, yeah, kind of.

SoupDragon · 01/03/2016 13:14

Well, apologies for trying to explain why it would have been deleted then. Hmm

DrSeussRevived · 01/03/2016 13:36

"horribly degrading to men"

"Makes the charity look like they are there to help girls being abused by their boyfriends and that's it. "

I don't agree, given they discuss both sexes on their website.

But even if the latter was 100% their focus, can you explain why it's "horribly degrading" to men? If a motorbike safety campaign features a young male rider, is that horribly degrading to... Men? Women? Older riders?

DrSeussRevived · 01/03/2016 13:38

Oh, oops, a deletion since I drafted that!

DrSeussRevived · 01/03/2016 13:40

Bubbles, I don't think you are moaning.

Sherlock20 · 01/03/2016 20:27

It's very disappointing to see women, who are supposedly more companionate than men effectively saying that abuse against men isn't important because of the minority of instances. (It's a good job as a society that we don't discriminate against minorities!). I think some women would be surprised how many men have been abused in one way or another, but don't open up to people about it, so that statistics on that basis cannot be accurate. Did I deserve to be assaulted by a girlfriend because of my gender?

Whilst there is a lot of bitterness on here for various reasons, I think we all need to remember that abuse of all kinds is not against one gender, but against an individual (regardless of gender). I think a lot of mens issues with the to advert is that it makes a blatantly biased assumption and makes all men feel guilty, when they have often done nothing wrong.

At the moment we live in a society where if a man is accused of some form of abuse, he is assumed guilty until proven innocent. Even after being proven innocent he is stigmatised by association resulting in depression and even suicide. Despite the harm false claims cause, the penalties have little repercussions. In the same way that society thought the world was flat and we once had slavery and overt racism, given another 20-30 years I think the current discrimination will resolve itself, particularly once there is better education on the subject.

BarefootAcrossHotLegoPieces · 01/03/2016 20:31

"a man is accused of some form of abuse, he is assumed guilty until proven innocent. "

Yeah. This isn't true though, is it?

BarefootAcrossHotLegoPieces · 01/03/2016 20:33

"Despite the harm false claims cause, the penalties have little repercussions."

Proven false claimants are treated exactly the same as those proven to make false claims of burglary, ABH etc. Seems reasonable, no?

BarefootAcrossHotLegoPieces · 01/03/2016 20:35

Oh, another first time poster. Colour me shocked.

Sherlock20 · 01/03/2016 20:42

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/11905639/Teenager-falsely-accused-of-rape-commits-suicide.html

How many suicides does it take for the issue to be taken seriously? If it was your son you think differently.

Sherlock20 · 01/03/2016 20:46

Yes, I'm a first time poster. Sorry for being a minority.

BarefootAcrossHotLegoPieces · 01/03/2016 20:46

There are magnitudes more unpunished rapes than false rape accusations. Many rape and domestic abuse victims commit suicide too, and of course two women a week die at the hands of current or ex partners.

Do you take those issues seriously?

BarefootAcrossHotLegoPieces · 01/03/2016 20:47

What brought you to MN, Sherlock?

Sherlock20 · 01/03/2016 20:55

My whole point is that no crime against a person should be taken less seriously. My viewpoint is that if an allegation is proven of either a true or false claim that the guilty person (person!) is then heavily sentenced in equal proportion. One day when the justice system has been dragged up to date, lie detention will be admissible in court and this will benefit society. In the meantime we can rely on the trial of witches approach...

Sherlock20 · 01/03/2016 20:57

My reason for posting is because I don't like to see inequality or discrimination of minorities (regardless of number of posts, colour, creed, race, religion, gender)

DioneTheDiabolist · 01/03/2016 20:59

Yes OP YABVU to think this campaign is horribly sexist.
