To think the 'Disrespect NoBody' ad campaign is horribly sexist?

p4rmaviolet · 28/02/2016 21:22

Not sure if this has already been discussed but has anybody else seen the 'Disrespect NoBody' TV adverts that are supposedly raising awareness for healthy relationships and domestic violence?

Every single scenario in the advert is targeted at men abusing women whether it be physically or emotionally. Y'know because men are never victims?

Because the 40% statistic is bollocks and makes it look like there is gender parity - there isn't. DV is a real threat to life for women and children.

But the advert is about Domestic Abuse... which is statistically 60 - 40.

DrSeussRevived · 01/03/2016 09:49

The advert is about partners rather than family - see the stats that were posted upthread which include family abuse. It also covers sexting, not included in the above stats. And it doesn't particularly cover stalking, included in the above stats. And it speaks to perpetrators not victims with some of the statements, so victim stats are less relevant.

I feel like we are going round in circles.

PrettyBrightFireflies · 01/03/2016 09:52

Well-meaning amateurs are always on hand to tell the professionals how it should be done - all the more so when its public money being spent. Hmm

SoupDragon · 01/03/2016 09:55

Yes, because professionals never ever get it wrong do they...?

Bubblesinthesummer · 01/03/2016 09:56

Yes, because professionals never ever get it wrong do they...?

Exactly...

DrSeussRevived · 01/03/2016 10:30

Of course professionals get it wrong.

But is targeting an ad primarily at the group most affected wrong, and providing back up information for other groups, wrong? Is it really horribly sexist?

Jasonandyawegunorts · 01/03/2016 10:32

Is it really horribly sexist?

No it's certainly not sexist.

However it doesn't seem to be a very good advert.

Don't you have anything better to do, Alexsimpson?

I won't be signing.

GwendolynMoon · 01/03/2016 11:21

Horribly degrading to men. Really? Hmm

Do I think the adverts/campaign could be improved, probably but I'm sorry, I certainly won't be signing a petition about it.

Helmetbymidnight · 01/03/2016 11:23

Wowsers!

Horribly degrading to men, huh?!

Men really find that ad horribly degrading? Blimey. DH didn't seem to be horribly degraded but hey.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 01/03/2016 11:23

I think some men think even mentioning male violence exists degrades men, which is the impression I get from Alex's petition. Sorry it makes you uncomfortable Alex but there it is.
Incidentally I watched the video linked on the petition and quite a few of the examples it gives are gender neutral.

PurpleDaisies · 01/03/2016 11:25

I won't be signing either. So what if looks like the charity is aiming at stopping young women from being victims of domestic violence (from the website that's not the case)? The campaign is only degrading to male abusers. I can live with that.

There are other charities devoted entirely to helping male victims. I expect they portray female abusers badly too. VWould you shut those down too?

RitaVinTease · 01/03/2016 11:27

Alexsimpson48
Horribly degrading to men who cannot relate to an advert where women are used as the example.
I wont be signing, grow up.

I think, as stated above the mankind number and the Women's Aid number should be on all DA awareness material.
Is there a petition for this?

PurpleDaisies · 01/03/2016 11:33

I'm amazed to the huge support that the petition has garnered in the two days it had been live. 15 people have signed. That's only 99985 signatures to go before it gets a debate in parliament.

Helmetbymidnight · 01/03/2016 11:34

Could you tell us more about why you find it horribly degrading?

OhShutUpThomas · 01/03/2016 11:37

I wonder if any of these posters are also posting on male forums to garner support and formulate a plan to campaign for more refuges etc for men?

Or are they just moaning at the women here instead?

limitedperiodonly · 01/03/2016 11:54

I didn't see the petition posted by alexsimpson48 but I note that it had received 15 signatures at the point at which the post was deleted. I doubt it was going to get many more signatures from members of MN.

I wish PPs would allow posts like that to stand instead of reporting them so we could all get a measure of the poster and the validity of her or his views.

I also find it's sometimes better to ignore someone's attempts at derailment or simply say: 'I don't agree'.

If it was very offensive, then the reporters have my apologies. But if not, these posts need to stand to stop the people who post them whining about censorship and other people thinking they might have a point.

PurpleDaisies · 01/03/2016 12:03

I agree limited-the posts weren't offensive (although I did disagree with the opinions expressed in them). I suspect it was the link to the petition that was the grounds for deletion.

SoupDragon · 01/03/2016 12:03

It was deleted because talk guidelines are that petitions need to go in the petitions topic.

limitedperiodonly · 01/03/2016 12:05

Someone asked why MRAs always seem to come out at night.

It reminded my of my favourite version of .

There are many others but the title sums it up for me. That and a line in the first verse: 'you had to wonder did he really hate her? Girls always made him nervous, that's to blame...'

Jasonandyawegunorts · 01/03/2016 12:07

Is it becuase:

  1. they are American
  2. they know most moderators go to bed.
Bubblesinthesummer · 01/03/2016 12:07

I have campaign for women's refuges. I have supported WA.

My DBro however, was nearly killed by his exW.

So no I'm not just 'moaning' here.

I am female btw.
