London MP Dawn Butler has said she was a victim of racism when a fellow MP assumed she was a cleaner.

www.independent.co.uk/news/people/black-mp-dawn-butler-reveals-she-was-victim-of-racism-in-parliament-after-fellow-mp-assumed-she-was-a6901261.html

In a separate incident in 2008 former senior Tory minister David Heathcote-Amory confronted her in the Members’ section of the terrace.

“He actually said to me, ‘What are you doing here? This is for Members only’,” she wrote. “He then proceeded to ask me, 'Are you a member?' And I said, ‘Yes I am, are you?‘ And he turned around and said to his colleague, ‘They’re letting anybody in nowadays.’ “This man could not equate the image he saw in front of him with that of an MP. It was quite upsetting for my team and so we had to take it further.”

Mr Heathcote-Amory rebuffed the accusation that his remarks were racist.

“It’s quite absurd,” he said. “What she is actually objecting to is that I didn’t recognise her as a new MP. I simply asked her what she was doing at that end of the terrace, and they are quite sensitive about this kind of thing, they think that any kind of reprimand from anyone is racially motivated.”

It makes you sad? Hmm

sweet, well some may be one, some t'other and some both. I guess that gives them some variables on the dickery scale.

I've been on the HoC terrace- and I was challenged about whether I should be there. I'm white, and not an MP.
The person challenging me was dressed in white tie & tails, and was black.

Yes, there are racist Tory MPs, just as there are racist labour MPs. And it's shit. They shouldn't be. But to say that all Tories are racist is just rubbish.

JoffreyBaratheon · 29/02/2016 21:06

I wasn't challenged at all on there - I was with a friend who was a researcher for an MP.

pastmyduedate0208 · 29/02/2016 21:14

Racist Tory Wankers.

pastmyduedate0208 · 29/02/2016 21:16

Plus the wildest misogynist comment I have heared a Tory say this month.
"Feminism has trumped everything. We are obsessed with letting women in".

pastmyduedate0208 · 29/02/2016 21:16

Letting women in Hmm

FatherReboolaConundrum · 29/02/2016 21:28

I agree crappy, but if the Tory MP in the terrace incident isn't racist, he enjoys giving an excellent impression of a racist for some reason, or at least he used to. He once told me, when he was interviewing me for a job, that it was impossible to tell what Japanese people were thinking (just about managed to avoid the phrase 'inscrutable orientals' but that was undoubtedly what he meant) and that he couldn't tell them apart from one another. Oddly enough, I didn't take the job.

Childishorhonest · 29/02/2016 21:34

I think we are seeing that Tory is indeed a safe euphemism for racist, and vice versa. Its safer than say 'unemployed people are lazy' or 'the poor are the least capable' or even 'managers have higher level skills than employees"..

Tories are almost be definition racist, as they support the structures, philosophies and economic structures that are the most decisive, white friendly and colonial.

Childishorhonest · 29/02/2016 21:34

Um divisive obviously..

Childishorhonest · 29/02/2016 21:35

Its v Alan B'stard

caroldecker · 29/02/2016 21:47

Tory is a safe euphemism for racist, in the same way Labour is a safe euphemism for misogynist.

jeremyisahunt · 29/02/2016 22:34

I cannot believe the backlash this woman is getting! Not on here, but on Twitter and news sites! Victim-blaming at its worst!
