There has been a proliferation of people in super dry outerwear. Everywhere you look the the logo emblazoned on the back right shoulder. I saw a whole family the other day branded with "super dry" on their puffa jackets. Why????? Am I an old fogey or is it a bit vulgar?

Jack Wills is funny. It works if your initials are JW I guess. Grin

I don't think it's vulgar.

I do think it's odd how it pretends to be Japanese when it is nothing of the sort. It's from Cheltenham.

I personally don't like brand logos but each to their own.

I find it funnier when people have t-shirts with logos saying things like '1974 San Fransisco Olympic Gymnastics Team' when they are clearly not old enough, not American and certainly not a gymnast.

Most people I know that wear North Face are utter twats. And under 40.

Sparkling, I bought DS2 a Jack Wills shirt a couple of Christmases ago. Underneath the bold 'FABULOUSLY BRITISH', label, were the words, Made in China'.

I see loads of people wearing north face jackets

I bought the Arctic parka when we had that series of freezing winters and we didn't have central heating. I realised when I spent my days fantasising about how warm I'd be in one that I might as well just buy one. That was the motivation, not the label.

Half the middle aged ladies in the choir I sing with wear superdry. I suspect that's why it's no longer cool with the kids.

Shock Shockers.

Ds1's friend came round and was wearing a hoodie with JW on. I had not heard of Jack Wills at this point. His surname began with a W but his first name didn't begin with a J. I thought he must have borrowed it from a relative or was a hand me down. Blush

My ski jacket is North Face. I'm almost 50 though, I don't shop in Tesco, and I don't think I'm a twat.

I'm over 40! Some people might well think I'm a twat though. Oh well.

I thought North Face was for people on TV doing outside broadcasts. Grin

Purely anecdotal, based on the people I know. Grin Most of them look like they couldn't climb a small mound, let alone a mountain

Sparking :o

That's quite a niche market isn't it?

Have you gone back in time?
The only person I have seen wearing SuperDry recently is MIL wearing SILs cast offs again.

I'm 40 and I have some North Face stuff.
However, that is because they are practical items of clothing. like coats, with a small logo in the corner.
Not a t-shirt with a Superdry logo bigger than your head.

Hester I am pleased that if the weather lady gets blown off the cliff in the force ten gale she will at least have been very warm indeed. Grin

I try to avoid obviously branded clothes for one reason: you are paying extra for the label and for advertising their product. Why? I do not belong to any tribe. I don't mind tiny indications of brand where the cost is justified eg. quality outdoor clothing where the extra money means 5 years extra life and true warm and dryness in British weather. Otherwise I keep the brands of my clothes to myself.

Every cloud!

The one stupid thing about the arctic parka is the stupid hood fur. When they were little, my nephew and niece used to call it my "caterpillar" when they saw it lying around.

shockers I have consulted the teens on current trends and they say:
Adidas Original clothing,
Nike air ( not just Nike)
North Face all black wind cheater coats (EVERYONE wears them at school)

Disclaimer: I won't be buying them all this gear. The prices are extraordinary.

If you mean what would once have been called 'chavvy'...and I think that IS what you mean?...then I agree.
I'll go hide now.

I agree OP it is vulgar - but then so is lots of stuff with logos plastered all over it. Not something that anyone in my family would wear, but each to their own.

Shockers · 22/02/2016 18:45

Ahh. DS2 has developed a taste for Adidas and Nike, of late.

He said black North Face puffa coats were worn by 'chavs'. I told him that 'chav' isn't a word I'd like him to use. Then I bought him a black Trespass puffa coat at less than half the price.

North face used to be a really good quality, technical outdoor brand. As did Barbour, hunter wellies etc. Things like this become fashionable beyond the sport or activity they were designed for, the company gets greedy, over expands, reduces quality and the original mountaineers or horsy people stop buying the product and it goes full circle and becomes unfashionable or "vulgar"!

Vulgar is one of those ridiculous words that people rarely use in real life but when they do it's normally make themselves sound a cut above the peasants. A bit like talking about 'oneself' and saying something is 'rather ghastly'. Normally people in real like would refer to something as 'a bit shit' instead.

Grilledaubergines · 22/02/2016 18:48

Vulgar? Really? No, it's warm and we like it. And since I pay for it, I'm not much bothered if others don't.
