to leave my baby in the garden to sleep?

With three older siblings, it's difficult for baby to nap uninterrupted at the weekend/in holidays. She's just over a year old so still needs at least one long or two short naps per day. When her siblings are off we tend to walk/scoot/skate/bike to the park before her nap and she falls asleep in the pushchair on the way home. I then leave her in the front garden in front of the kitchen window and DCs and I paint/bake/draw in the kitchen so she's in sight at all times.

Today we did the above but there was a knock at the door ten minutes after we arrived home. It was a neighbour advising me that it's too cold and too dangerous to leave her unsupervised outside. I explained that I can see her and she's well wrapped up (full body vest, outfit on top plus jumper, double socks and full snow suit and hat) so she's fine but the neighbour kept saying I should take her inside. I politely declined and said I needed to get back to the other DC. She muttered about how I'll end up 'getting reported to someone'...!

AIBU to leave her outside?

Op yanbu. I live in Scotland, where most of us put babies outside to nap, and have been doing so since forever.

We don't have urban foxes here though, so I cant comment on that. I can definitely confirm there are no concerns with the birds of prey.

I have a rather geriatric tortoise. Never seen him as a danger before...Grin

Skiptonlass · 15/02/2016 21:56

There's one in our freezer too Grin

We live on the outskirts of the city so we get them coming in regularly.

Whoever said that cats are a risk is right though - probably your biggest risk here would be a car getting in the pram.

We live in the arse end of nowhere so I suppose things are different here. But friends with gardens in Edinburgh used to leave babies out often.

As with everything I guess you just use common sense

Don't trust that bird lass

Skipton

Whereabouts in Sweden? You have described exactly where I moved to last year.

ElBandito · 15/02/2016 22:38

I used to leave my DS (now 5) outside, no worries. Couple of weeks ago I had two foxes charging around the garden, middle of the day, I was eating lunch as I watched them. Have to admit I don't think I'd leave a baby out there now.

ghostyslovesheep · 15/02/2016 22:42

that robin has murder on it's mind - it's ringing round it's wildlife friends rounding up the foxes and child hating rabbits

PrimalLass · 15/02/2016 22:44

Those robins know which side their bread is buttered. They are practically tame and sit staring at my mum until she feeds them.

ghostyslovesheep · 15/02/2016 22:50

first they win your trust ...

ConferencePear · 15/02/2016 22:55

When I used to put my babies in the garden to sleep, I always used a cat net. They kept the flies off too.

SS can't do right for doing wrong. On this thread we have posters saying SS would visit for a child left in a pram outside being reported to them and other posters saying this is ridiculous, ss had the cases of Baby P, Victoria Climbie on their books and failed them. Why would they bother with this?
Now imagine the headline 'Baby Freezes to Death in -1 Temperatures, Despite Being Reported to SS'. With the case being that a neglected baby was left outside in pram underdressed for the weather at the parents' convenience. We'd all be up in arms that SS knew and didn't visit. They shouldn't have better things to do than investigate a poor wee mite left in the cold, they've failed AGAIN!
How do you want SS to know if they don't visit?
I leave dd in her pram in the garden btw, I'm not saying OP is wrong by any stretch if the imagination but it's the SS bashing that pisses me off.

I think it's absolutely fine. Fresh air is brilliant for children and I think it's fantastic you actually bother to take your kids out for a walk and a play everyday instead of dumping them in front of the TV.

I put both mine out in all temperatures unless it's foggy. I read with great interest the Scandinavian articles.

The chances of anything happening are very slim but is there anyway just to be sure you could wheel them around the back? I can't so when we come home I'm in a similar situation. If my neighbour knocked on my door id say go ahead report me to who you wish. Grin

Is nobody concerned that leaving the baby in pram out front might see the pram (and baby included) dissapear on to the back of a scrap metal truck?
A scrap metal collector took a specialist wheelchair from outside of a house near me, fortunately the person was not in the wheelchair at the time, it had just been left outside.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 16/02/2016 08:07

Do you think the scrap man would have taken it if the owner was still sitting in it? .

Iamnotloobrushphobic · 16/02/2016 08:12

Maybe if the person had been sprayed in silver paint he would have done.

Disclaimer: I do know the person who this happened to and she won't mind me making light of the situation.

No, I really hadn't thought of that Grin Grin

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 16/02/2016 08:14

What? They tried to take her mobility chair while she was sat in it?Shock.

totty12mum · 16/02/2016 08:14

Might get attacked by a dog or cat while her back's turned???? Better ban all pets in the home with children then...
