We have many tube spiders living around the front door.

They terrify me, but I can cope with them when they're in their tubes.

However, Saturday evening I couldn't get in as one was right by the key lock. I had to tap on the window to alert dh to open the door, whilst I hurtled, bent over, through the door.

I've counted 8 large tubes so far. They are growing in numbers!

Hey I've never killed a spider! Never allowed anyone in the house to kill one either and DH is very scared of them. Everyone knows just to shout me and I'll humanely take them outside. I seriously never kill anything. Not even wasps or moths and I'm terrified of those suckered!

I googled rain spider (weeps). Why. I won't sleep now!

OP those shiny ones you're farming at your back door look evil.

Shudder....

I've been to Australia a number of times and seen a few huntsman spiders. Not nice. I love my friends in Oz but I prefer them to visit me here.

Anyone know if there are large spiders in Oman??

Ah yes sorry the rain spider is venemous but no more so than a bee sting so not dangerous.

sally I don't think my DHs phobia is due to wanting a big strong man to rescue him ConfusedHmm

Does Oman have camel spiders? Now they're evil fuckers!

But I suspect many people think it's 'feminine' to be frightened of them and to be rescued by a big strong man.

I think you're underestimating genuine fear and phobias there Sallying. For some people the sight of a spider provokes a very strong, innate reaction.

Shit! I just can't stop looking in horror at the pictures on this thread! I'm terrified of spiders. Yanbu.
We have quite a few of those spindly cellar ones which I don't mind that much as they're spindly, slow and keep themselves to themselves though occasionally we get a cheeky fucker like the one last night who nicked me strudel.
There was a slice of apple strudel leftover from dinner which I'd left on top of the oven and just as I reached to get it the sneaky spindly bastard descended down from the cooker hood in slow motion and sat on my strudel!
DH put it in the garden and the strudel went in the bin.

OP those ones look revolting, I don't think I'd be able to walk through the doorway. We had some like that in the porch of our old house and DH hoovered them all up and emptied it straight away into the wheelie bin.

MadamDeathstare, that was one of the first threads I ever read on MN. I still glance over it when having a bad day. Angela Hernandez and 'equal access for all life forms' still make me laugh. Makes me feel better about the time I kissed my boss, and the time the heel came off my shoe, and I totally denied it, despite my colleague placing the heel of my shoe on the desk in front of me. Nope, I hobbled to a meeting and brazened it out.

Hugs to Angela, I hope she's enjoying her retirement.

Sallyingforth, I've always been petrified of spiders. It's an irrational fear, I know. I can't bear to see them move especially.

One of my earliest memories was sitting in a cot and a big black spider was scurrying over the covers.

I knew it wouldn't take my key/bite my hand off. But I just can't control this fear when it grips me. It was late and only dh was up.

I certainly didn't need to be rescued "by a big strong man", I just couldn't go near the door and had to duck and run, pretending it wasn't there.

I've got better with this fear over the years, I've read books with my dc about spiders and the important role they play. I respect them but can't stand them. I have always been very mindful around my dc. Passing on this fear is the last thing I'd want to do.

Now wasps on the other hand I'm as bold as brass. Smile

hollinhurst What the actual bastard fuck is that?

Dear god, forget setting fire to the house, I would fucking throw myself in the wood burner.

I am far from a little weak hysterical girly but those bastard things make me want to jump on a chair and squeal. I hate the fuckers, they are not cute or interesting they are hideous.

I know they are unlikely to bite me to death or kill me to death, I just can't stand the sinister bastards, bleugh.

I find it embarrassing as well. When I was 18, I was a supported living carer and would do the odd night shift in a house shared by adults with various learning disabilities.

One night there was a huge spider in the kitchen, and one of the women I was caring for found it most amusing that I was so scared of the harmless spider. She would tell everyone and anyone how pathetic I was that evening!

I couldn't live in that house!!
Hate spiders in rl but for some reason I like googling pics?!
Rain spiders are hideous but if you're a bit like me then the Goliath tarantula is worth a Google! Not for the faint hearted.
Not sure why I've posted this but I'm going to anyway :)

me - absolutely no idea. I'm not great with spiders but I did manage to swipe myself in and lock the doors. It looked like it wanted to rob my keys and then my alcohol Grin

Hollin your spider is a St Andrews Cross spider, or an orb-weaver. Totally harmless, but surprising to walk into, as they have an unfortunate habit of building their webs at face-height.

Much more energising is this lovely below - this Funnel-web lives in my rockery garden. I don't garden much at the moment since I saw it Grin

Sorry, my post was meant for [Horace]. And forget the bit about the St Andrew's Cross; it is an orb-weaver, but a long-jawed one!

Ooh. Thank you for solving my spider mystery! :-)

One of my earliest memories involves huddling in a bathroom due to a field spider blocking the exit. I think my mum passed her fear to us kids. I'm trying not to do the same to mine.

Luckily we're not troubled by spiders. It's too cold for the fuckers the wolves have eaten them all

I'm ok with spiders. Found a false widow on our gate post, I didn't know it was, it was just odd looking, so I snapped a pic and sent it to oh as he's not fond of spiders! found out years later after seeing a news article and it looked the exact same! Confused

Couple of gruesome tales for you, my mum used to work at a supermarket and ended up refusing to restock the bananas, she lost count of the amount of tarantulas (luckily mostly dead) that she used to find.

For a while my dad worked with my uncle, roofing. One job they were in the attic clearing a hornets nest, and saw a huge tarantula hiding out in a corner, dad said it had gorged itself on hornets and had a dead one hanging out the corner of its mouth! They got rid of it, but it put up a fight apparently!

Oh Hola Sad my dd loves bananas and I've always been a bit creeped out buying them for her because of all the tarantula stories. But have convinced myself that it's a rare occurrence and that's why it makes good news stories. But now your story has worried me again......

And the funnel web crazy you have in your garden?! Your not in the UK are you!
