We have many tube spiders living around the front door.

They terrify me, but I can cope with them when they're in their tubes.

However, Saturday evening I couldn't get in as one was right by the key lock. I had to tap on the window to alert dh to open the door, whilst I hurtled, bent over, through the door.

I've counted 8 large tubes so far. They are growing in numbers!

WTF?

Don't google rain spider, just don't!

I've just googled the rain spider, shudder.....

I have no problem with spiders in general, just don't like big ones lurking around my door.

Does anyone remember storyteller magazine/tapes from the early 80's, Timbertwig and Abigail the magic spider? The mention of Charotte's web reminded me.

I don't mind spiders really. I have huge issues with buzzy winged things, but spiders, not really. Even the long fanged loathsome bastard that bit me so badly in the summer that it left a bruise and fang marks. Bastard.

I discovered this one in my bathroom in Sydney a few years ago. It was about as big as my palm. Nice. :-/

The pic Hollington posted is of a giant house spider, fairly common in Britain. Iirc is the largest indigenous spider, and one of the fastest. Completely harmless though, very unlikely to bite.

I don't think a cellar spider would take out a giant house spider; they do eat black widows though (not in the UK, obviously).

It bloody well was. It met its end by way of my flat mate's flip flop!

And I haven't a clue. Nobody has ever identified it. First and last time I've ever seen one like it.

Oh god I'm in bed, but really want to google the rain spider and banana spider. But that's going to seriously affect how I sleep isn't it??

Did you know that all spiders are venomous? It's just that the little ones don't have big enough fangs to break skin.

So, it's not that they don't want to kill you, it's that they can't.

What kind of spider fuckery is this?!! Trip lines on a spider web?!! That's sinister OP. Burn and run fast.

Why kill them? Just why? Why do people do this? They will not hurt you. They don't want to hurt you. Why are people such heartless bastards when it comes to spiders.

The rain spider is pretty hideous!! But not venemous which always calms me a little.

The banana spider is a Brazilian wandering spider yes?! Where do you live madam?!?

Shit. The. Bed.

I'm normally OK with spiders, but I have a genuine visceral reaction to some of those photos, prickly goosebumps raise up one side of my neck...

OP, your spiders are Chunky and glossy and just wrong looking. Those amazing webs, wow. Fascinatingly terrifying.

We need Hiddenhome to come on and inform us about these terrors.

DH and I both washed the dishes after dinner on Sunday and agree there was nothing untoward going on in the sink area when we finished at 7pm.
When DS went to put the kettle on at just after 10, he screeched like a banshee. There, over the sink, between two cupboards, was a massive web containing hundreds of baby spiders. Their mother had clearly abandoned them, we haven't seen her at all [checks knicker drawer again]

All spiders are venomous, they're just not all medically significant to humans.

What was it going to do? Steal the key and run away with it? Bite your hand off?
Spider phobia can be treated.
But I suspect many people think it's 'feminine' to be frightened of them and to be rescued by a big strong man.
Please don't teach the fear to your children by screaming in front of them.
