I agree with his campaigns, but he is an absolute dickhead. Really unlikeable.

It's béchamel, undeuxtrois Smile

At the weekend I made a tart with crème fraîche instead of cream and it was delicious. Each to their own - doesn't warrant all the opprobrium.

I know someone who was a trainee at 15 near the time it started. She had to drop out for personal reasons, but 7 years later they are still helping her.
Unintentionally he maybe a twat, but he is at least trying...

UnDeuxTroisCatsSank · 08/02/2016 07:49

Er, thanks for the spelling correction.

fascicle · 08/02/2016 08:53

I think his heart's in the right place. And I also wonder whether it's ever possible for a high profile, wealthy celebrity to champion causes without attracting criticism and annoyance from some quarters. I don't think it is.

I dunno - Bill & Melinda Gates seem to do it pretty well. When they die, they will become the biggest charitable contributors ever. But they are not trying to make a big media show, and extra personal profit, from it. (That doesn't mean they pretend it's not happening - they promote their charity partly to encourage other wealthy people to do the same)

I do agree with the basic message about eating more healthily etc, but I am highly skeptical about someone becoming a multi billionaire from that message and still keeping the majority of their wealth for themselves when they could donate millions and it would have no effect on their lifestyle.

I am, btw, equally skeptical of many other 'rags to riches' media stories. This isn't a personal attack on any one celeb. But the way this stuff gets spun in the media worries me, and it can be hard to find out just how realistic the story is.What Jamie is like as a real human being, I have no idea. I can only comment on his media persona.

Dotandethel · 08/02/2016 18:06

He's a nob

BadgersNadgers · 08/02/2016 19:16

Twat with shit recipes. Freeze grapes and chocolate to make a 'combo!'. Frozen grapes and chocolate taste shit. Dickleburgh!

limitedperiodonly · 08/02/2016 19:49

His recipes are usually very good but that's because they are Italian classics he's pinched from Ada Boni

She didn't pretend they were her recipes. She just collected hundreds of them together and her book has been plundered by Jamie, Nigella etc.

But good luck to him. Even though he hasn't credited her at least he presents them in a way that's a bit more user-friendly than her book, which doesn't have pictures because it's 50 years old.

I kind of wish he would talk about her as well as his mates who join him on his laddish programmes - one of whom I wouldn't trust to strike a match.

aprilanne · 08/02/2016 20:35

a friend and i went to jamies italian in edinburgh .she ordered a latte with skimmed milk .no skimmed or semi skimmed only full fat .i pointed out that for a man always banging on about healthy eating this was shocking .the waitress said well its organic .maybe but its still full of fat .and the services was rubbish 50 minutes between courses .certainly not what you expect with the name on the door .

expatinscotland · 08/02/2016 20:52

He's always been a twat and yy, Badger, his recipes are shite. I'm sick of all his patronsing condescending wank all over the telly.

millymollymandy46 · 08/02/2016 22:30

I think he's brilliant - doesn't need the money but puts his head above the parapet for things that do matter like decent food for kids and trying not to let our kids get obese. And he wants us either on TV on in his books to make nice food.
I have made a lot of his recipes and they are usually tasty and delicious.
And no I am not Jules, just a middle aged, pretty crappy cook, who thinks he is a Good Thing.

ladydepp · 08/02/2016 22:46

I've always liked him, great recipes, passionate about food and his family. He cares about something and does a hell of a lot more for other people than any of the rest of us do, he could easily live an easy life and just write the odd cookbook. Of course he makes mistakes sometimes, but his background is not his fault. What's wrong with wanting to do good works AND be in the public eye??

The attacks on his appearance and speech are just grim. Tall poppy syndrome at its worst.

And no I'm not Jules Grin

limitedperiodonly · 08/02/2016 23:01

I don't understand people saying he doesn't need the money like it's a laudable thing.

Of course he doesn't. Donald Trump doesn't need the money either.

We're not all motivated by money.

Like Trump, he's motivated by hearing the sound of his own voice.

I understand that. God knows I am too. It's just that I'm not rich and well-connected enough for people to listen to me as much.

thebestfurchinchilla · 09/02/2016 14:43

I like him and I do think he wants to do good in the way that he can. I like watching his programmes and I like his recipes. He isn't perfect, doesn't claim to be.

thebestfurchinchilla · 09/02/2016 14:45

aprilanne Full fat milk is 4% fat so technically a low fat food item. Fat is not the baddy, refined carbs are!

I wasn't really thinking in terms of philanthropy, although I'm sure it makes a difference - the degree to which wealthy individuals are known to financially support the causes they champion.
