I agree with his campaigns, but he is an absolute dickhead. Really unlikeable.

OP posts:
bluebell34567 · 07/02/2016 10:50

I think he and his team ran out of ideas.
he wrote all kinds of cooking books there isn't any left to write.
he did all sorts of tv cooking programs there is nothing left to do more.
I don't know how his restaurants are doing but read some very bad reviews, news about some of them.
he is rich but he still wants to earn more maybe for his children or as celebrities like attention he still wants to be out there.
he looked more sincere before but he seems changed now.

QueenLaBeefah · 07/02/2016 10:56

I do think after the huge success of the Deliciously Ella cook book he (and to some extent Nigella) spotted a huge gap in the market.

TBH I don't have fizzy juice in the house. Not because I'm a health nut - just a tight wad.

MuttonDressedAsMutton · 07/02/2016 10:58

"Absolute dickhead" "God complex" "Twat" - All a bit stiff for someone who really does no harm. Fair enough - dislike him if you wish but really? Such opprobrium for someone whose only crimes are being successful, being a bit issue-led and keen and being maybe a little unwilling to grow up? No need for it. No need at all.

damncat · 07/02/2016 10:59

Can't stand him, hate the "mockney" voice, the "bish bosh" and his patronising attitude. Did I mention that I certainly can't afford his budget recipes, would not eat at one of his restaurants (read the menu of the one in Exeter; all buzz words and no real food on the plate) and have no intention of making a fried cheese sandwich?

SevenOfNineTrue · 07/02/2016 11:00

He gets paid very well for his campaigns

Who pays him? Genuine question. I assumed he did these things as he was passionate.

OurBlanche · 07/02/2016 11:19

Does he have sugary fizzy drinks n his restaurants? I don't remember seeing any on his menus. Just juices at about £3, diet coke at £2.50, some Bottlegreen stuff and a homemade lemonade.

The hideous prices are par for the course. And he might have other fizzy drinks, I just don't remember them. Then again, I have only been to a Jamie Italian, once Smile

ISeemtoHaveLostMyUsername · 07/02/2016 12:03

Just watched the Andrew Marr Interview - ugh, what a knob, I really despise anyone in an exulted position who advocates the modification of people's behaviour through taxes or any other means.

It repulses me. It's utterly high-handed and patronising.

And do they actually think it works? It hasn't for tobacco or alcohol.

Oh, and I had a coke in Jamie's Italian, along with my mediocre food. It was subject to a 10p levy which according to the menu;

'Sugar-sweetened soft drinks are the single largest source of sugar in our children’s diets. That’s why at Jamie’s Italian, we’re adding 10p to the price of every soft drink with added sugar.* The money raised will be spent on vital children’s food education in the UK. For more information visit childrenshealthfund.org.uk'

Children's Health Fund is a charity set up by Oliver, it's primary purpose is to put pressure on restaurants to also pay the levy - which will go to his charity to put pressure on restaurants to pay the levy...odd.

limitedperiodonly · 07/02/2016 12:06

He was nice but his security was a massive twat.

Security people are paid to look like massive twats so the people employing them look nice.

Armi · 07/02/2016 12:06

His 'portable pub' is called 'The Cock In Cider'. I don't need to know any more to know he's an utter knob.

yankeecandle4 · 07/02/2016 12:07

Through are you Jools? Grin

MrsCampbellBlack · 07/02/2016 12:09

He does some good but is an idiot in other ways. He goes on about diabetes but doesn't distinguish between the two types. Well actually I think he does now after he received a massive backlash after he posed with a coke can saying 'diabetes' on it.

Many people pointed out to him that type one is not caused by drinking coke he failed to apologise. In fact as most people know - a small can of coke is actually a good thing to have if you're having a hypo. I have a child with type one so of course I was more annoyed by this than many people would be.

So I think he should just get a little more educated and if he does make a mistake then just apologise for it.

yankeecandle4 · 07/02/2016 12:11

damncat what do you mean you can't afford his budget recipes? All you need is a bit of foraging in your local park hahaha Jamie

limitedperiodonly · 07/02/2016 12:19

All a bit stiff for someone who really does no harm.

But I think he does do harm. Not harm on the level of ISIS or people who put anti-freeze down for cats who shit in their gardens.

But he uses his media access and wealth to lobby for political and social ideas I don't agree with but am not in the same position to counter.

I'm not particularly talking about the issue of obesity. Who would be in favour of that?

I'm talking about his methods of tackling it. He demonises people who don't think like him and romanticises the peasant culture of a mythical MediterraneanLite like it's a DisneyLand where roadsweepers love to eat fresh anchovies on stale toast with a bit of wild oregano picked from the roadside.

But even worse are his absolutely abhorrent ideas about taxation, import of cheap labour from immigrants which drives down wages and working conditions and opposition to workers' rights.

I don't think he's a twat there. I think he knows exactly what he's doing on that score.

The only thing I don't understand is why he was hinting about driving 'them' - the Tories, presumably - out of power.

If Labour got in they'd bring in all sorts of pesky employment legislation and possibly a sugar tax.

ISeemtoHaveLostMyUsername · 07/02/2016 12:24

'The Cock in Cider' - dear Lord - I just Googled this and it's true, who thought that might be a good name? GET A FUCKING GRIP YOU LISPY TWAT.

Although I also found this article, which amused me.

redexpat · 07/02/2016 12:26

Absolutely op. Good campaigns (giving unemployed youngsters an opportunity, school dinners), worthwhile causes, but cant bear the smug mockney.

Also he seems to have no idea about how councils or beaurocracy works. When the school dinners were going over budget, he kept saying nah dont stop the project and the finance woman asked him where she should take the money from. He didnt seem to grasp that it had to come from somewhere, just kept bleating dont stop the project.

ISeemtoHaveLostMyUsername · 07/02/2016 12:26

Completely in agreement with Limited there.

Spot on.

SauvignonBlanche · 07/02/2016 12:29

He was awful on Andrew Marr today - I cringed.

deregistered · 07/02/2016 12:36

He's the Bono of the culinary world

He's like the Bono of cooking.

Arse.

limitedperiodonly · 07/02/2016 12:50

I used to go to a wine bar that sold only wine or water with its food.

Not a problem for me. But people who weren't regulars sometimes found it a bit odd. If they didn't like it, they didn't become regulars, but that wasn't a problem because it was very popular.

One Sunday afternoon a woman asked for an orange juice and he said he didn't do it and when she asked for Coke he said he didn't do that either because he didn't like them and didn't think they went with food.

She said she was pregnant and he congratulated her and offered her a glass of mineral water on the house or tap which was free any time.

She was outraged and told him he was terrible. He just said: 'It's not the place for you.'

That's what I call putting your money where your mouth is. This wasn't the Dark Ages either. He sold up in 1997.

BillSykesDog · 07/02/2016 12:52

I loathe him. The basics of his campaigning are that poor people are shiftless, bad parents, feckless, lazy and irresponsible, which is why they are poor. Therefore everything pleasurable should be taxed out of their teach so only the responsible, clever rich can have them. The state also needs to intervene as much as possible in the lives of the poor and tell them what to do. But he's not prepared to pay much tax to support the government doing that. If they need any tax they can just tax poor people who eat sugar! What japes!

SuburbanRhonda · 07/02/2016 12:52

iseem

Whoever wrote that article you linked to seems to have spent a long time coming up with more and more venomous ways to describe Jamie Oliver's appearance.

No matter what you think of him, that was just hate, pure and simple.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 07/02/2016 12:55

I'm sure his intentions are well meant [ aren't we all well intentioned?] but in my opinion he wants to stay relevant to the public and uses this campaign in order to do so.

limitedperiodonly · 07/02/2016 13:06

YY BillSykesDog except that I'd say it's more subtle than poor people. It's people who don't do what he says no matter how much money they have. Hence his pathetic veiled threats against David Cameron this morning.

At one point he looked at the camera as if to personally address Cameron and they switched to another camera but later allowed him to break the fourth wall. That is the mark of either a dramatic genius or a deranged person.

He was besties with Michael Gove as Education Secretary, even to the point of calling the Secretary of State Govey. But when Govey declined to do what he wanted, Jamie had a tantrum. Govey has sailed on.

It's odd for me to find myself admiring them for ignoring him because I'm not a natural fan of this Conservative government or those in the past or to come - unlike Jamie Oliver.
