To think that everything has to be a 'thing'

These days?
E.g
Going to a mates house to play = play date
Feeding baby bits off your plate = baby led weaning.
Baby playing with bowl of rice = sensory play
No one goes on a diet anymore they make a "lifestyle change"
A coffee can't even be a coffee anymore it has to be a mochalattaoohlala. At home! At home!! Wheres the nescafe!?

Maybe Im uneducated or something but jeez

Thankyou. Back in the eighties I think it was I stopped being able to go to any classes because all of a sudden they were 'workshops' Just couldn't bring myself. It completely wound me up.

emilybohemia · 07/02/2016 13:24

Ooo and when youtubers talking about 'styling up' an item of clothing.

MrsJayy · 07/02/2016 13:27

Screen time bloody screen time whats that about Confused

Cooroo · 07/02/2016 13:27

But before people went jogging, they went running - I remember similar outrage when jogging became fashionable! Agree with lots of this. But as a cyclist, having the right gear really helps if you're going to do a lot of it, and in rain!

DD being 19 I've missed out on a lot of the above, thank god.

foxessocks · 07/02/2016 13:27

My cousin recently put a picture up on her Facebook page of her and her brother outside a restaurant. How nice until I read the caption of "sib date"....wtf? Just a meal with your brother surely?? Why is everything a "date" these days? I always thought "date" was a romantic thing particularly at the beginning of a romance. For that reason I will never use "playdate" it will be just "coming over to play". And I don't go on dates with my husband, I go out for meals with him. And I definitely have never been on a sib date although I have been for lunch / dinner with my brother many times!

Argh! That felt good to get that off my chest.

FifteenFortyNine · 07/02/2016 13:28

YANBU, especially the baby-led weaning thing drives me mad, people make it seem like it's this whole amazing life-philosophy based on academic theories and learnings and what-nots, but it's just feeding your baby bits off your plate.

foxessocks · 07/02/2016 13:29

And forgive me because I expect it has been mentioned but I may have missed it but...conscious uncoupling?! You broke up!

MrsJayy · 07/02/2016 13:34

My dds are 22 and 18 all that palava wasnt around it seems babies are some sort of project these days

TempusEedjit · 07/02/2016 13:37

Great thread! Things that really annoy me:

"Can I get" when ordering food etc

The word Uber

A new episode of Midsomer Murders or whatever is now a "drama premier"

Schools no longer being schools but academies, colleges blah blah.

Supermarket/bank staff etc being referred to as Colleagues... I'm the customer so how can they be my bloody colleague?!

Monstermuncher · 07/02/2016 13:38

Use of the word text when it should be texted. I see this all the time and it gives me utter, utter rage

Abbinob · 07/02/2016 13:40

Earth mama, I don't even know what that one means, all mothers are from earth surely?

OP posts:
Abbinob · 07/02/2016 13:42

These are alternately making me "rofl" and have "the rage". Now I've offended some of you with those remarks!

Overpriced beer = craft beer
Overpriced bread = artisan bread
Making fruit juice in a blender = juicing
Not eating ready meals very often = eating clean
Watching a film = movie night
Watching telly with someone = Netflix and chill (yes I know it means shagging)
Going easy on booze after Christmas = Dry January
Going jogging in the park = Park Runs

momtothree · 07/02/2016 14:28

Upleaveling - school speak for checking for errors!!!!

GarlicBake · 07/02/2016 14:40

Loving this thread Grin It speaks to communications granularisation. Because why? Words! Curate them. Kondo your vocab. Today's innovators = tomorrow's thought leaders. The future has happened, mindfully. Optimise sustainable vision. Leverage insight. Share our journey towards meaningful.

Also, please can Veganuary stop now? It's Carnivebruary!

LilacSpunkMonkey · 07/02/2016 14:44

Uplevelling actually means improving your work, not checking for mistakes.

It's in addition to checking for errors. It's looking at how you can add excitement to your writing, by adding more description and emotion.

And it works.

EricNorthmanSucks · 07/02/2016 14:46

I think a lot of people who lead very ordinary lives like to give ordinary things their own vocabulary or talk up those ordinary things by dressing them in vocabulary used in different settings.

I'm not sure if they do it to try to impress others or to connive themselves that their lives are super exciting/important/complex Confused.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 07/02/2016 14:48

Yes people are all so special that they cant do anything that sounds average. I'm waiting on the invention of a fancy way of saying I need the toilet. Grin

fuckyoudoorhandles · 07/02/2016 14:56

I can't stand the term 'hack'.
Cleaning hack
Shopping hack
Nappy changing hack

Hack off!

Mac & Cheese. No, it's not, it is macaroni cheese!
