These days?
E.g
Going to a mates house to play = play date
Feeding baby bits off your plate = baby led weaning.
Baby playing with bowl of rice = sensory play
No one goes on a diet anymore they make a "lifestyle change"
A coffee can't even be a coffee anymore it has to be a mochalattaoohlala. At home! At home!! Wheres the nescafe!?

Maybe Im uneducated or something but jeez

Bae as is the arms manufacturer?

redshoeblueshoe · 11/02/2016 09:56

Freda - entirely different connotations indeed Grin

BassAce · 11/02/2016 09:59

No Compost Bae as in 'significant other/crush/boyfriend/best mate' or whatever other shite it's used for. Allegedly stands for "Before Anyone Else" or is just a really lazy way of saying Babe and not quite having the energy to finish the word. Smacks of bring an arse hole in my book.

ComposHatComesBack · 11/02/2016 10:05

That makes more sense arms manufacturers aren't known for cosy nights in.

crispytruffle · 11/02/2016 10:06

"Ping me an email" is one I can't stand.
Binge watching is another one.

Pupil = someone following a course of instruction with the aim of becoming better informed or skilled.
Student = someone actively pursuing knowledge, same aim.
Learner = someone undertaking a series of activities that might eventually result in improved skills and/or knowledge, who knows? It helps if they actually turn up and make an effort.

ComposHatComesBack · 11/02/2016 10:38

Born I'd argue the categories aren't as rigid as that. Undergraduate degrees are a course of instruction but I wouldn't describe anyone as a University pupil.

The distinction I make is compelled to be there - pupil
Undertaken of their own volition ( anything post 16) - student.

borntobequiet · 11/02/2016 11:01

My post was meant to be facetious - but:

School pupil - not necessarily required to actively pursue knowledge independently ( though better if they do)
University student - required to undertake independent learning as part of the course ( though some do not bother)

Someone learning to drive - not compulsory - pupil
Someone taking singing/instrumental lessons - not compulsory - pupil

Etc.

Learner is however a meaningless term applied in the hope that an individual is actually learning something.

Love this thread so much I had to read it all and still laughing over 'shabby chic'. Grin Just wanted to add DH's favourite 'power down' - TV, laptop etc - instead of 'switch off'!!! Also in the office we used to 'kick ideas around' which meant we all had a long discussion about something and then the boss tells us what we're going to do anyway. And don't get me started on 'synergies'...

Just a bit of support for coffee servers - baristas? - though. cdtaylornats the 'dimwits' who serve your coffee (all supporting themselves on the way to degrees where my friend works) hate the coffee-related rubbish just as much as you do, much of it from customers. Just going off for a flat white Smile...
