To not want to travel to Dom Rep or Mexico

DH wants long haul guaranteed 26 degree plus holiday weather. I don't want 8 hour plus flight time with dd6 and dd nearly 2. Also not keen on going to the Dominican Republic or Mexico. AIBU? I'd be happy with Tenerife in April however DH will hate it if it's not hot

YANBU. Would hate being somewhere hot too with young children. Would spend the whole time trying to keep them covered (though I may be biased as the mum of a redhead Wink)

I have been to the Dominican it'd safe.as long as you don't go out of the resorts they recommend you don't wander around out the resorts apart from on trips beautiful place though I went on my honeymoon there but I ,m not sure I would go there with small children.

I've heard the same about DR but in Mexico you can leave the resort safely and go into town the worst danger is pick pocketing but it's the same risk in London.

We have been 4 times, most recent ally last month with our 3.5yr old and 23m month old.

It really isnt unless your idea of a great holiday is being stuck inside the compound of your hotel.

The canaries will be comfortably hot enough in April. Only a 4 hour flight, much cheaper, and you can go out and about. I would recommend Lanzarote personally, as I think it has everything you need for a family holiday or even a couples holiday. Tenerife I havent been to but know plenty who have and it is much more the choice of stag/hen do's and group holidays too.

I don't know anyone who's been to the DR who hasn't got food poisoning.

Mexico is a big country and it is NOT as safe as Tenerife. But staying on the tourist track is probably not dangerous.

I have been to the DR three times without getting food poisoning. The cheaper hotels tend to cook everything in coconut oil, which has a pronounced laxative effect, but it doesn't make you ill. The DR is beautiful and the beaches are amazing. It's one of the poorer countries in the West and it shares an island with the poorest. It would be silly to think that that doesn't cause any problems for them, and I would be slightly more careful when out and about than in Europe. I felt safer there than in Moroco, for example.

Well it's recommended that you have antimalarials and Hepatitis A vaccine for DR - that's something to consider.

I went to Tenerife last April - it was pleasantly warm but I wouldn't say it was hot. Cold to swim, that's for sure.

If you want hot and lovely in April how about other islands in the Caribbean such as St Lucia, Antigua or Barbados?

I agree Doobigetta it's a beautiful island and I loved it on my honeymoon but it's a long way to go with kids that young and whilst I really enjoyed the trips out they were not paticularly child friendly .

Why would anyone stay in their resort in Mexico? Assuming you're staying on the riviera Maya / near playa deal Carmen? It's no more dangerous than London.

I assume the poster who said you can't go out of the resort has never been!

Thats still long haul though and with kids of 2 and 6 its going to be very hard work I would think. Not to mention the jet lag too. I would rather spend more money on extra luxury nearer home. A hotel with a heated pool :)

Well my parents are the canaries right now at it's 22 so you should've safe for 26 in April . Particularly if you go to a dry Island.

agree with you,op, re safety in some locations. Read that Acapulco made #4 most dangerous city in the world.

Puerto Vallerta in Mexico is fabulous, very safe, lots of nice places to eat and drink, other than in the resort hotels, the tap water is fine to drink, and it's beautiful, whilst actually feeling like you're seeing some of the real Mexico.
The downside is that it's a bloody long flight and on that basis alone, I would stick with the Canaries!
