to wonder why people give their children different godparents?

I've noticed a few threads lately about problems when one child has more active godparents than siblings (not a TAAT)

I don't have much experience as my children aren't Christened and I am godmother to an only chid. I thought one reason to appoint godparents was so that if, God forbid, something happened to the parents, the child(ren) would be cared for by someone close? How wouldthat work with multiple children with multiple godparents? Would the children be separated?

We didn't chose godparents to be guardians as well. Our friends are godparents; my brother is guardian.

Godparents aren't the same as guardians. You name a guardian in your will, and if not they would go either to nearest suitable family or into foster care.

I don't see our godparents as potential guardians. I see them as wonderful people who I've brought into my children's lives. It never occurred to me to give them the same ones - I wanted to include several friends and think it's more special to have different ones.

Ah okay,like I said I have very little experience (also not Christened myself) I guess my goddaughter's parents seeing me as a potential guardian is an added extra ☺

Have they named you in their will, and discussed this with you?

Our children would go to my husband's sister, but she is not a godparent, but she is named in the will.

God parents are to guide spiritually in the relationship with God life with in the faith/church. To be a role model of "good person" to bring some sort of quality in to the child's life as they grow.
My cousin has only just been confirmed at 13 in May last year he is his cousin on his dad's side God parent when she was christened in December.

I think a lot of people have the perception their picking guardians but their not.

It alarms me that so many people seem to confuse godparents and guardians! If you're religious, it's usually a religious role, if not its a way of encouraging a special relationship with an adult, usually one outside the family. If you want your child to be looked after by a specific person in the event of your death, you need to talk to them, ask them explicitly whether they are willing, and put it in a will!

Only in Victorian novels is Godparent synonymous with Guardian!

My DC's godparents are their potential guardians. Or rather, DD1's godmother and DD2's godfather. But that is seperate to their role as godparents, and we asked them seperately to asking them to be godparents.

DD1 wouldn't recognise Her godfather if he walked up to her in the street, so he's certainly not going to be a guardian!

If you aren't related to the parents and they don't have a will, it's unlikely the child would go to you. Assuming there is other family.

My parents are named as the people who should have our children in the event of our death.

As pp said a god parent is not the same as guardian. Being named a god parent gives you no right in law and wouldn't add anything in the event of the worst happening.

We've picked different godparents for our children to recognise our closest friends who've been with us since school or university.

Guardian is my sister and her partner they're not godparents.
