to have told off colleague for using disabled toilet

loopsylala · 04/02/2016 10:03

I have a disability and often can't get into the toilet at work as its being used by people changing clothes etc.

I mentioned it to hr who put a sign up but that's been removed.

Just caught someone using it. I asked if he was disabled, he said no but that the other toilets are sometimes full. I said that didn't matter, as he shouldn't be using the disabled toilet.

I'm worried now I will get into trouble. I've complained about this so many times and don't want to be seen as a trouble maker or that it's "my" toilet.

I hate confrontation and want to get on with my colleagues.

Could I have handled it better?

We seem to be back with the odd MN theme here that, so long as something isn't illegal, it doesn't matter in the least that it's thoroughly inconsiderate. See also smoking and parking threads.

Samcro · 05/02/2016 08:11

think today I will go and park in P&C space.....i won't be long so won't matter.

Blu · 05/02/2016 08:16

SamCro, I'll be in the next space so give me a wave! I don't actually need the space to park in to shop, but I am planning on taking a camping table and chairs and having a picnic for a couple of hours.

People needing it to park in can just wait . I am entitled because I will have a child with me.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2016 08:18

I won't even have a child with me. They're accessible spaces though and I have a big handbag. So what if it inconveniences a parent.

This is the first time ever in 10 years on this site that I have seen a thread on this that says that disabled folk should just suck it up and stop being special snowflakes. Weird.

bruffin · 05/02/2016 08:23

Fanjo stop being so nasty. You have no idea what someone who has just walked put of a toilet is going through.

Bambambini · 05/02/2016 08:26

Maybe get a band of disabled folk to go to the mall and take up every stall for an hour (take a mag or your phone) and leave the one disabled loo free for everyone else?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2016 08:28

Buffon. .yes..thankfully..TMI

Sirzy · 05/02/2016 08:28

tough I hate that to. The only baby change shouldn't be in the disabled toilet.

There is no reason a fold down table can't be put into the ladies and gents in most places

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2016 08:29

Not sure why my phone changed bruffin to buffon there

daisychain01 · 05/02/2016 08:36

I don't understand why the OP couldn't use a normal toilet if their disability is hidden so don't have wheelchair access problems...

What a bizarre thread!

I think if you'd come up to me and asked if i was disabled i would have told you to mind your own business. I doubt very much that the toilet is alway being used by everyone else. Seems you are just foot stomping over a principle. Life is short hun so maybe concentrate on worrying about things that really matter. You are just going to alienate everyone.

Dixie
The people who are in denial on this thread about hidden disability are the ones that should know better
You can be healthy and sometimes have days and times where the need for a toilet is very urgent, ir the need for extra space and a sink in the toilet is necessary.
Empathy and understanding is not a one way and needs to be learnt by everyone.

StitchesInTime · 05/02/2016 09:56

daisy - OP says in one of her updates that she has to use the disabled toilet, because she has an assistance dog which won't fit in a normal cubicle, and the nature of her disability means she has to have the dog with her at all times.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2016 09:57

Who is in denial about hidden disability?

I do hope you don't mean moi.

On the contrary, what a bizarre post. Daisychain, can you really think of no circumstances where a disabled person who doesn't need a wheelchair might nevertheless need an accessible toilet?

There is no point being silly. We've all had situations with diahorrea, sickness, massive period flooding, pelvic floor issues. These things are unfortunate but you can't use them as reasons to pretend you're temporarily disabled.
Equally, sometimes a disabled person will have to wait for the loo, for example, if another disabled person is using it. If it's someone with chrons or a colostomy bag or someone who can't control their bladder they'll be in the same unfortunate position I would be if I had food poisoning come on and the loos were busy. It's not pleasant, it's awful to think about and it's humiliating. But it might happen. That's life. You might have the same Emerency situation whilst driving your car or on public transport or walking down the street, nowhere near a loo.
Don't use these emergencies as a reason to need a reserved private loo, that's a ridiculous notion.

If you need an accessible loo for mobility issues you're able to wait for it as anyone is able. No problem there.

The problem is if the accessible loo is always busy, rendering it unusable for those who need it. That is a problem with a shortage of loos, and quite different from the entitled to use it/ not entitled argument.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2016 10:05

I agree toughas but wasn't sure who bruffin meant, since her last post was a dig at me about the same thing.

Samcro · 05/02/2016 10:32

`"If you need an accessible loo for mobility issues you're able to wait for it as anyone is able. No problem there. "

really? so what if your in a WC and have continence issues?
waiting for another disabled person....fine thats life.
but someone who is TAB and could use a "normal" toilet.
nah
