"I'm too pretty to do maths" - AIBU to think this is a terrible slogan for a product marketed to teen girls?

accessories.ee.co.uk/product/dgskbl/david_&goliath/blonde_phone_sock-_im_too_pretty_to_do_maths/

Found on the EE accessories shop.

I know it's a piece of pink printed tat but AIBU to think that telling young girls you can be either pretty or clever is absolutely shit?

Ifrit I would love to have heard what you said to your daughter. I am picturing a puzzled little face looking up at you.

My daughter is a bit older than yours and she is a maths teacher. I don't think I will show her this, I can picture her reaction only too well. She is pretty by the way.

senua · 31/01/2016 18:17

Thank you for your input on this accessory. We try to cater to a lot of different tastes - humor being the option in this accessory's case. We do apologize if you have found it to be offensive, I'm sure the designers didn't mean for this message to be taken seriously but simply as a silly jest.

Arrrrgh. It's humour and apologise. Dimwits. And they haven't got the excuse of being American because the original offending items says Maths not Math.

thegiddylimit · 31/01/2016 18:18

If it wasn't that they would think there was a market for this shite I'm tempted to buy this for all the male mathematicians I know (DH and DB). Much more ironic then.

tinofbiscuits · 31/01/2016 18:22

Dreadful! Angry

scalliondays · 31/01/2016 18:24

Exactly - fine for a maths whizz kid and if only seen by anyone who can appreciate the irony.
Was there a blue equivalent for boys?

Katenka · 31/01/2016 18:35

Ffs I hate this shit.
It's not funny. It's bullshit.

Luckily my dd doesn't buy into that shit. I am appalled at this sort of stuff.

Eastpoint · 31/01/2016 18:38

So do we all go on their website & accuse them of sexism? I used to complain everytime I went into WH Smith about Playboy branded stationary. I don't mind commenting about its inappropriateness.

UnGoogleable · 31/01/2016 18:53

Ugh.
I find the retailer's response sarky and patronising in places. Glad you reported it.

ZiggyFartdust · 31/01/2016 18:56

Of course its dreadful. But lots of women love that shit, and that's the real problem

Birdsgottafly · 31/01/2016 19:06

David & Goliath's stuff is meant ironically and aimed at the 'Emo' type market.

If you don't like were it's stocked, complain to the stockists.

Sparklycat · 31/01/2016 19:08

Is buy that for myself, I hate maths haha

icanteven · 31/01/2016 19:11

Get thee to Twitter, and include the hashtag #womeninSTEM while you're at it. Include @mumsnet for good measure.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 31/01/2016 19:12

It's shit and exactly the kind of thing ex-SIL would buy for her two dds because they're only good for prettiness.

But she also calls babies 'sexy'...

Ifrit · 31/01/2016 19:18

Was there a blue equivalent for boys?

Nope. There never is.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2016 19:24

Appalling, especially for marketing at girls.
Reinforces the most negative sexist stereotype. Would this firm dare use a racist stereotype ?
More girls need to do more maths !

SparklesandBangs · 31/01/2016 19:27

You can get one for my DD she can take it into her lectures for her STEM subject at one of the UK's top universities. She is blond and pretty too, shall I tell her to come home and practice filing her nails!!

greenkitee · 31/01/2016 19:31

I personally can't see an issue with it? Some people assume that girls are going to take this crap on board.

I was once asked by a plumber if I would ever become a plumber, I laughed and said no. He replied "good because you don't see a pretty plumber" I don't remember being scarred or refusing to ever go into that industry. Some people just love a moan

Birdsgottafly · 31/01/2016 19:33

""Was there a blue equivalent for boys?""

No, there wasn't because David & Goliath started out making products for 14-24 year old girls/women.

They're starting to do stuff for Men, as well.

I've seen this range for years, my DD went from Emoish to Goth.

It's meant ironically and actually it's similar to what Amy often says to Penny, in the Big Bang Theory.

ChristineDePisan · 31/01/2016 19:37

I thought that the response from the company was pretty rude actually - then I suppose I'm not their target audience, and they wouldn't really care about that

Ifrit · 31/01/2016 19:39

I found it quite dismissive. Some people find it amusing but obviously not you, you joyless killjoy....

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 31/01/2016 19:46

"We do apologize if you have found it to be offensive"

Ah the classic non-apology! Be sorry that you did it arsehole, not that someone found it offensiveAngry

howabout · 31/01/2016 19:51

"I work out - just kidding I take naps" Just had a check on D&G merch. This has to be the ultimate slogan for school run PJs Grin

tinofbiscuits · 31/01/2016 19:52

Some people assume that girls are going to take this crap on board.

Just because you were enlightened and confident enough to ignore the plumber you met doesn't mean everyone is. If they don't peddle the nonsense in the first place then there won't be any danger of girls taking it on board.

magimedi · 31/01/2016 19:55

Just so fucking dire & depressing.

Why did I spend my 'yoof' being a feminist (70's) to see shit like this?

And if any mathematician can explain why two minuses = a plus I'd be very happy to listen.

Honestly, I am 60 & I so wish I understood maths (I'm very good at arithmetic) but I would love to understand algebra, calculus, imaginary numbers...............

Shallishanti · 31/01/2016 20:05

it's awful but am struggling to come up with a suitable response, is it on amazon, we could bombard them with reviews?
