To ask for an emergency GP appt- constipation?

Ok, I appreciate it isn't usually, but just couldn't get past the receptionist so may try again in pm for other receptionist

Child usually has it, limited diet, withhold, on laxatives...but as of last night hard belly, pain. Hours of crying/ lying on floor. I can actually see it, but they can't pass it. Again starting today. Limited speech.

I've tried everything I can think of, water, juice, warm bath, positioning...but hysterics. I have no idea what to do, just getting overflow liquid and tears.

Definitely. I did for dd last week and she wasn't as bad as that. what dose of laxatives have you tried?

Well pretty much fuck all movicol...see fussy eating/ limited diet. Even when in hospital three nurses failed to get meds in, so isn't just me!

Definitely. A child with constipation is awful. DD suffered terribly. Try and get some movicol it's been amazing for us. Lactulose never helped

You could try hiding some lactulose in her favourite drink, it can be mixed with milk too.

DS had a dose the other night and it worked in about half an hour.

Can the pharmacist help? On holiday we got something you put up there to soften things. Not sure if they have similar in UK. You could visit or call them. If not can you ask the dr to call you instead? They do this here and can send a prescription out to the pharmacy.

How old are they? Are they open to plan old fashioned bribery to get then to take their medicine?

I cant hide anything in anything-seriously. It's extreme, very extreme. Got movicol and latulose here but she wouldn't take, got some in last nigth but sat on her tummy and she was sick instead.

I think you would be very justified in calling back and asking (demanding) an appointment

Phone the Dr insist she is seen ask for a Gp call back receptionists have no right to question you say she is ill with stomach pains no more explanation .sounds horrific

I reckon all you can do now is hold her down and pop a glycerin suppository in.

I phoned the GP for constipation once and they said nothing they can do except advise suppositories and lactulose. This had been going on for over a week too so was utterly desperate

By all means see a doctor, but try suppositories as well.

Oh god, utmost sympathy. My dd has no SEN but getting the meds down her is a constant battle (I started a thread...). If it's poo withholding that's causing the issue then suppositories are counterproductive in the longer term but I'm not sure what other choice you have if you can't get oral laxatives down her (I have been making some progress with plain flavour movicol, strawberry cordial and hardcore bribes (lucky dip bag) but she's 4.5)

Do you see a gastroenterologist? Refusing to take Movicol (or any other oral medication) means you really need some expert help.

But in the short term, definitely suppositories.

Btw my thread was about poo withholding and constipation. I was recommended Dr Cohn who practices at Watford general and specialises in this stuff. I haven't been to see him yet but downloaded his book from amazon. Have you heard of ERIC? They're a charity that deal with child continence issues. They're really good and have a helpline.

If you think you need a GP appointment then tell the GP "severe abdominal pain" and then the GP who IS a doctor can judge what best to do.

Glycerol suppositories. Your child may not be delighted, you may have to make sure it stays in for a while, but I reckon you have to put the medicine in at that end by now to get it all out. Just keep in mind that she might be back to her old self soon. Good luck!

I have a rare digestive system condition and I get severe constipation as part of it. When it's bad, it's agony and so, I have every sympathy. Please do push for an urgent appt.

Have you tried lactulose btw? It tastes like sugar. I can only take liquid meds and some are very grim, so I'm sure it's a nightmare with kids.

If things are very severe, they can do an enema in hospital. From, but may be necessary.

I hope you get an appointment I have a 4 year old with asd and trying to get him to take medicines or his inhalers is extremely hard normally a 2 or 3 person job.

I agree with the others the receptionist does not need to know why they need an appointment, just say you'd rather speak to a dr.

Let her drink more water. Fruit juices could also help your baby. An herbal supplement as well might help her like Digestic by Mimonis. I have given my son with this supplement when he got constipated and good thing it works on him.
