Hmrc took 160 from my other halfs pay, no idea why, no notice and vital funds to allow us to feed our family. Kep trying to call hmrc to find out why and they wont even attempt to take the call the automated machine just says ''we are sorry we cant take your call. Try another time''

How the hell do you actually get put through?!

I got straight through today but it was earlier. See if you can find a few different numbers and then get them to pass you on to the relevant person.

Has his tax code changed? Post up his code and we'll see if there's a problem.

Do you file self assessment tax returns? I do and I had to pay a lump sum when I filed my return then a smaller amount was due at the end of This month? If so, Can you log on to your online account? It should show you details of all payments there.

The best time to phone is 8am on the dot.

They are unlikely to speak to you due to data protection.
More likely to be arrears than current tax bill. Any problems with tax credits etc?

Rang hmrc, they said they messed up tax codes and they will take it back at the next tax return. Erm what? I had to go to the bank, take it out of the current account and put it somewhere safe until August, because we have to pay it back. So much hassle and not even a sorry.

Yes, your DP has to call, they won't talk to you regarding his pay.

Maybe best to wait until Monday, that given that the 31st January self assessment deadline is looming.

Keep trying.

Make note of who you talk to, which call centre and the time.
Also, make notes of both sides of the conversation.
Be vigilant and do that every time you call.

Gatehouse is not giving correct advice. There are very limited circumstances in which you don't have to repay money given by HMRC in error and best to not assume that you fall within one of them. HMRC now fiercely contest such claims.

OP - HMRC don't take money from your pay, your employer does. It could be that they made a mistake. Have you aked them? Always worth a try in case it was their error (even big employers do make them). Also, compare tax codes for this and last pay days: if they haven't changed then it's probably an employer error. If th code has changed then try HMRC again. I find that they often reply more quickly to letters.

If it's your other half's pay then they won't talk to you without his prior agreement. Start dialing at 7.55am, by the time you get through the stupid automated menu it'll be 8am and there shouldn't be too much of a queue.

I doubt they would let us keep it. I don't want it anyway if it's not mine, but an apology for causing me hassle would have been nice.
For some reason they had the income as much lower all of a sudden, therfore put wrong tax code in and that made the payment much bigger.

OP your DH needs to speak to payroll at his place of employment.

HMRC won't speak to you about his tax affairs and it is nothing to do with them anyway. It is the employer who makes pay deductions. They won't speak to you either - he has to do it himself.

Definitely start with payroll.

Definitely DO NOT believe that if HMRC make a mistake you can keep the money.
