AIBU?

to proclaim that my DH is all kinds of wrong in how he prepares his croissants...

Please settle an argument - marital bliss is at stake here.

I know think that when putting jam on a croissant you stick the knife into the croissant and spread it around on the INSIDE.

DH believes wrongly that you should upturn said croissant and spread jam on the bottom.

He's wrong - right? Please tell me I'm right!

I don't want to have to butter each mouthful individually as I eat, I would find that inconvenient and annoying. I cut in half lengthways, 20secs in microwave butter or jam, close then scoff. Spreading jam on the underneath is just weird. He must have dreamt it.

tear a bit off and spread.

In France they don't put anything on them, they dip them in the coffe/hot chocolate??

DH slices his open with a bread knife and spreads butter and jam inside as if it's a roll. That's just wrong. Tear and dunk in coffee, or spread with butter and marmalade (I don't like jam).

I do same as him!

What Ziggy said - is absolutely right. It doesn't really matter thought if the butter and jam (or cheese or honey or whatever the fuck other weirdo stuff you put in/on your croissants, my kids have Nutella), as it all tastes the same once it's in your mouth and your chewing, surely?

Sorry - you are all wrong except those that tear and eat without any extra butter or jam, dipped in fresh coffee if you like.............

I DO tear off little pieces if I'm eating a croissant myself - I promise! I don't put anything on a croissant - not jam, not butter, nothing - they are perfect on their own! DH on the other hand, and 3 of the DC insist on jam on/in theirs hence the debate!

I am heartened by so many responses declaring DH outright weird, but I shall remain strong and not LTB. It's a challenge, but I fear if I left him he would descend into even more weird food debacles!

Tear and eat just croissant. Though your dh is evidently certifiable, and should seek immediate medical help. You must prevent him from trying to spread his evil croissant treatment.

Tear and spread. Tear and spread. Obvs.

Croissants are made with butter and should already be buttery enough. Just spread pieces with cheese and enjoy.

Or buy pain au chocolat instead. They don't need anything added.

you are both wrong. croissants should be dipped into coffee.

On France they pull its little leg off, butter then jam the flat side before eating and tearing its other little leg off and doing the same. It must be warm.

I discovered this after much research in France as a kid.

scribble I share your cringing, MIL also takes bread, slices it, butters and then puts the whole thing to her mouth and bites. Shock

I'll be honest, as well as judging those who slice open bread rolls rather than break them open (only exception is if you are making a sandwich), I also judge those who slice scones. Twist, people, twist!

manderley - we should meet up and consume bread products in a knowingly smug fashion Grin my DP and your MIL can eat outside where they belong Wink

lastnight I have a friend who does what your MIL does. She is someone who will openly berate you at the table for doing something she considers "wrong" (eg I was given a stern talking-to the other day for having a cappuccino after lunch- I know it's not "right" but I'm pregnant and I felt like having it), she also says "expresso", amongst other things.

She takes a roll, cuts it in half, then butters it directly from the butter dish with this back and forth buttering manoeuvre and if she needs more butter she puts her knife back in the dish. Then she bites into the whole half of a roll.

I feel a complete bitch now having written that out but it's annoyed me for years I'm also still stinging from my cappuccino scolding

Jam on a croissant is wrong! A buttery croissant is nice and savory, it's a mistake to sully it with jam.

Report
zipzap · 27/01/2016 22:56

You're all wrong Wink

Best ever way to have croissant is to cut before putting into the oven to warm, then spreading with butter, black cherry jam and banana slices before putting the two halves back together. If it's a large croissant then you can cut it into two pieces so that it's easier to eat.

Heaven.

there's no point eating croissant any other way once you've tried them like this Grin

Doing them like this and then using them in a croissant bread and butter and black cherry jam and banana pudding makes for a wondrous pudding too...
