to proclaim that my DH is all kinds of wrong in how he prepares his croissants...

Please settle an argument - marital bliss is at stake here.

I know think that when putting jam on a croissant you stick the knife into the croissant and spread it around on the INSIDE.

DH believes wrongly that you should upturn said croissant and spread jam on the bottom.

He's wrong - right? Please tell me I'm right!

Tear a bit off at a time, and butter and jam on each bit.

My MIL has taught my kids to warm their croissant in the microwave, it ends up in a chewy, greasy mess, but they seem to love it. Now that's all kinds of wrong.

dayslikethis · 27/01/2016 16:26

I kind of agree with those saying tear off little pieces and butter/jam them individually, but in my defence I am usually preparing them for the DC (often on a school morning) and especially with the 5 year olds that would just be a recipe for disaster!

I dip it in coffe too. It's got to be proper coffee though. Not instant. If I'm feeling really naughty I'll put a splash of cream in my coffee too. My arteries cry out in horror.

ImperialBlether · 27/01/2016 16:27

I agree - tear and butter or tear and put jam on. Don't use a knife to cut it.

TooMuchOfEverything · 27/01/2016 16:27

I tear, but for kids it is ok to do it your way OP. Your DH is wrong wrong wrong.

liz70 · 27/01/2016 16:30

"My arteries cry out in horror."

I once worked for a lady whose regular breakfast was hot chocolate with about three sugars added, and two large croissants spread liberally with butter topped with Nutella.

It was a long time ago, so I don't know if her heart's given out or not yet.

Battleshiphips2 · 27/01/2016 16:32

My DB calls crumpets butter receptacles. Muffins and potato cakes just don't do it for me though (unless they are my mums potato cakes slathered in butter). I am making the most of my pregnancy because I don't usually eat bread products. I eat a paleo diet. Only 3 more weeks left of doughy deliciousness!

KatharinaRosalie · 27/01/2016 16:36

I live in France. Never, ever have I seen anybody spreading anything on the bottom of a croissant.

LastSliceOfBread · 27/01/2016 16:39

Yup. Warm in oven then tear of bits, jam and butter.

When letting children do this, I found the pick up child in sitting position then hold over back door step and shake system works best to control crumbs.

Pointlessfan · 27/01/2016 16:40

You definitely tear off bits and butter/jam each bit. My mum says so so it must be right (she also thinks people who cut a bread roll in half in restaurants are "common"!!!).

CremeEggThief · 27/01/2016 16:42

Croissants on a school morning? You are lovely. I only allow them on Sundays. Can you be my mum, OP? Grin

AlisonWunderland · 27/01/2016 16:43

I agree with your DH.
Bottom spreader here!

borntobequiet · 27/01/2016 16:46

Croissants are made with butter, they need no extra butter and no jam, just tear and dip into strong sweetened café au lait. And they should be warm.

Allalonenow · 27/01/2016 16:50

You are both wrong.
La bonne méthode en France is to tear off a small amount, add butter and jam and eat!
That is also how to eat a bread roll, people who cut the roll in half and spread it with butter have no savoir vivre.

MamaLazarou · 27/01/2016 16:51

My MIL spreads butter on the bottom of croissants.

Also, she calls them cr'ZANTS.

Fairylea · 27/01/2016 16:51

Worked in catering and restaurants all my life. It's definitely tear and butter / jam on each piece as you go. Well I think so anyway!

My mum cuts them in half and toasts them in the toaster ! ShockShock

While we are on the subject Aldi speciality ones are lovely, closely followed by Tesco finest ones :)

Pointlessfan · 27/01/2016 16:53

I want a croissant now!

scribblegirl · 27/01/2016 16:55

What Ziggy said.

I was brought up with the opinion that you must break your bread roll up, take a knife to the butter and put it on the side and butter each piece individually.

DP cuts his in half and butters each side like toast. I've never said anything because I know it is UTTERLY unreasonable but it makes me cringe when he does it Blush

scribblegirl · 27/01/2016 16:56

Sorry, X post - Ziggy and about 100 other people!

DrFoxtrot · 27/01/2016 16:57

I sometimes tear a little off and butter a piece at a time but mostly just butter the top. The effect is the same no matter where you butter it Grin you are still eating croissant and butter/ jam.

Allalonenow · 27/01/2016 16:58

Me too Pointless, but I've only got brioche in the cupboard!

SanityClause · 27/01/2016 16:59

You don't spread the jam.

You tear off a little at a time and spread a little jam on each piece, as you go.

So you are both wrong, and VVVVVVU!

ItchyArmpits · 27/01/2016 17:10

DH believes wrongly that you should upturn said croissant and spread jam on the bottom.

Shock That is some fucked-up shit.

Jux · 27/01/2016 17:12

All my French rwlatives do it the way described by ZiggyFartbuckets. DH does it your dh's way. It is about as wrong as you can get.

If croissants are filled at all, they are made that way and bought already filled. To fill them yourself is, well, indescribable.

Goingtobeawesome · 27/01/2016 17:13

My life has suddenly become so much easier.

I tried to cut a croissant the other day for lunch to have cheese in the middle. Palava. I'll be tearing from now on.

Only fair I return the favour - slice pittas before toasting. Saves burnt fingers.
