Boasting about your wealth on Facebook. Why?

tellmelies · 27/01/2016 08:58

Why are people so keen for others to see how many expensive material possessions they have.

Is this a 'thing' now?

OP posts:
araiba · 27/01/2016 09:00

people never showed off before facebook?

Birdsgottafly · 27/01/2016 09:00

Are they boasting, or sharing pictures with people who are supposed to be happy for them?

I've got family who do both, on and off FB.

Peevedquitter · 27/01/2016 09:03

What have they showed off, spill the beans.

Is it a massive yacht or a tiara?

Birdsgottafly · 27/01/2016 09:03

Oh and I'm in my 40's, they used to do it in RL, so it's always been a 'thing', it's just a lot more people have disposable income and we're living in a more consumer society.

But I'm happy for people that I know, who are just sharing, as you do, with friends/family.

tellmelies · 27/01/2016 09:03

It seems like boasting.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 27/01/2016 09:04

I have one on my fb. She is highly amusingGrin

Katenka · 27/01/2016 09:04

How is posting about your wealth any different from hosting about your holiday, shopping, new car, abs etc

That sort of thing happens on Facebook all the time.

General Facebook behaviour as far as I know.

If you don't like it unfriend the person.

The only people I have who boast of Facebook, do so because they are associated with a company and its part of making the company look successful.

I know lots of business people who have grown their brands, in part, by making themselves look successful.

tellmelies · 27/01/2016 09:08

I can understand sharing those pics with family.

But do people who are struggling, and there are a lot who are struggling, really needs to see that you have so much money coming out your ears you don't know what to spend it on.

It seems insensitive.
They should adjust their settings.

I don't like this at all! So tacky.

AlwaysHopeful1 · 27/01/2016 09:10

Then it is up to those people to remove themselves as friends. Someone will always be In a worse off position, it doesn't mean that others need to stop loving their lives so as to not 'offend'

CocktailQueen · 27/01/2016 09:11

If you don't like it, then move them to your Acquaintances list or stop following them. They can post what they like.

TheCatsMeow · 27/01/2016 09:11

This depends entirely on what you're referring to. Lying in a bath of money on a yacht or just taking a pic of their new dress?

No. You should adjust your settings! Or unfriend.

It's their page, however annoying.

Pics of new dress I can handle.

You're not far off with the 'lying in a bath of money on a yacht'.
It's bragging for bragging's sake.

tinofbiscuits · 27/01/2016 09:13

YANBU. Facebook gives your FB friends a "one size fits all" picture of you. It's not personalised to the recipient in the way an email or phone call would be, and so there's no sensitivity to the other person's circumstances.

MorrisZapp · 27/01/2016 09:14

We need to know what these pics are of.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 27/01/2016 09:14

People can post about whatever they want on Facebook. Everyone else had an 'unfriend' or 'unfollow' option if they don't want to see it. There are many, many people better off than me. Couldn't care less what they post about.

TheCatsMeow · 27/01/2016 09:14

tellmelies if they're literally doing something like that I'd just unfriend them

tellmelies · 27/01/2016 09:14

It doesn't upset me usual, I'm tougher than that.

I just find it annoying.

I need to adjust the filters or something.

Bragging is an unattractive behaviour regardless of where it's done. I would choose to ignore these people in real life too.

tellmelies · 27/01/2016 09:17

The thing is, why would you want to do it? Confused

What's so lacking in your lif , that you crave constant constant approval of your 'things' from casual acquaintances and strangers on the net?
