To warn you all about the dangers of Foxgloves?

Yes. I am unreasonable for sticking this in AIBU. Yes I'm fully aware that it's not at all unreasonable to warn someone about something dangerous.

Yes I'm also aware this post outs me, and so that's why I've name changed.

I'm hoping it's not against the rules to share a blog here? If it is, feel free to delete :) I shall take it like a woman.

Some of you may know the other me on here (since you know the story) please don't out me!

The story of what happened to DD2 last year

That's scary Bungo.

I know if I was buying an unknown plant, I'd be likely to think dangerous ones would be labelled. I'd assume anything that wasn't, probably wasn't edible, but wouldn't be actively harmful.

It does surprise me that there aren't rules for labelling them when they're sold (obviously not applicable to wild flowers as in my case).

Yes it's down to parents to parent, but how do they do that when ignorant of what could cause harm?

well, I found a guidance for retailers

www.kew.org/science/ecbot/HTA_code_list.pdf

maybe small market sellers are not aware?

Outfoxgloved · 28/01/2016 10:23

That's a great list, and exactly what I assumed sellers would do.

I'm sure most garden centres are sensible and careful. There's nothing to stop you having what you want in your garden. It's just about keeping small children away from them, and there are lots of ways to do that.

don't most people assume that all plants are poisonous to eat unless proven otherwise?

Outfoxgloved · 28/01/2016 10:41

I'm sure they do, but if your pre-verbal child eats something, it's best you recognise what it was. It's not about learning every plant. Just common ones in easy reach of toddlers.

I knew about digitalis but didnt realise how dangerous they were. I was going to plant some this year and although DS is 10 we have a kitten and he has taken to trying to eat leaves.

Outfoxgloved · 28/01/2016 10:49

Old, my cat used to do that too. Most cats will avoid, I'm sure, but upthread was shared a very sad story about a poster's cat who didn't survive eating some foxglove :(

Well done Lady! You message is getting around loud and clear. I shared on fb, and it was instantly shared among people I knew with small children or grandchildren.
I also do the twitter thing so I shall post it on there later - any ideas for a good hashtag? I'm thinking #nopickingnolicking but it might not be catchy enough...?

Outfoxgloved · 28/01/2016 13:00

Thanks Alpaca :)

I love that hashtag... Maybe something shorter?

I'm trying to think of something and nothing's coming to me!

YANBU
I didn't know. We had them in the garden as children and were told not to touch them because they might have bees in them.

Never knew they were poisonous.

Outfoxgloved · 28/01/2016 15:14

Space, I wonder if telling children they'll be chased by bees is a more relatable fear? :o
